I remember talking to my mother about Lucy Honeychurch's hair in the scene where she kisses her fiance (this was around 1994), and saying how ridiculously huge her hair was and that it looked so unrealistic. My mother turned to me and said "actually it's very accurate, my grandmother was about that age in the Edwardian era, and she wore her hair just like that...maybe even a bit fuller!" 😊
@Trillidotia6 жыл бұрын
PumpkinBecki I remember that scene. I wondered if they made her hair so big to emphasize how tiny she was, and so young and vulnerable. Cecil was so so creepy in how he treated her! It was such a wonderful, beautiful movie.
@PumpkinBecki6 жыл бұрын
Serena60 Yes Cecil was very peculiar wasn't he. I agree, it's a beautiful film, the music, the scenery, the lighting all worked together perfectly...and a very young Rupert Graves doesn't hurt either 😊

If you look at the Gibson girl hairstyles they are huge. They were also recreated again somewhat in the early 1970s. They made women look like they had enuff hair for 5 people. They saved hair from their brushes and wore switches (bought hair) I guess and used roller type gadgets to make their hair voluminous for the updos. My friend used a bandana to roll her hair. It added bulk under the hair rolls.

I tried this look about 2 days after I watched it. I went out with some girl friends to lunch. I felt quite vogue doing something different with my hair. Of course, it was not as full as I have thin hair but it was really easy to do. And, I sure will give it a go again. Thanks for breaking it down as that made it possible for me to replicate. :)

Also look at the forties ( a look at the female song groups i.e the Andrew sisters.) One thing they used then which was like the Room w/ a View was the way they styled the front of the hair; made a boufant bump in the front to be very high and full.If you didn't have the volume naturally (which most people didn't) they took something called "a rat" which was a form which placed in front hairline back a few inches combing the hair over the rat gave the voluminous look desired.

Women/girls used to curl their hair with tissue papers and a metal heat tongs rested in/near the fire back b4 curling irons. There is a name for these curls- papillotes. They might have burnt their hair, but they were very adept with diff fire types & gaging the heat needed. Probably tested the tongs on something b4 using it on their hair.
