The "X" was sprayed on by the first responders to denote that the car has been checked and cleared of any injuries. Injured (if any) have been removed.

Amazing catch! I If I'm not mistaken, #300 was the first ALC-42 to be delivered to Amtrak. Sad to see it was involved in this accident.

The red X’s were put on each coach etc by the fire department as a sign that they had been checked and no one remained inside. Standard first responder procedure.

You got that right. I was IN the first coach behind the baggage car. Immediately after the loud BANG of the lead truck hitting the ground, the car began to tilt to the left. My first thought was of the Southwest Chief wreck almost exactly a year earlier. Two words flashed through my brain: “Stay upright!” The car righted itself, then began leaning to the right. “Stay Upright!!!” Again it rightened and started leaning left again. “STAY UPRIGHT!!!!!” That apparently did the trick, as we finally ground to a halt. The diner and first sleeper were leaning, but at least everything stayed on the wheels, if not the track.

Why was nothing shown with regard to the Southwest Chief in June of 22? These trains cannot stop on a dime, have inquired about the engineer as he was tramatized possibly.Even though there are many rual places where trains travel, there should be warning signal & cross arms like any major place.An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. UP has a habit of parking locomotives in LA so the graffiti is to be expected. Basically any parked locomotive or rolling stock you see down there is tagged.

Just as the Texas Eagle was set to finally have it’s sightseer lounge returned! So far that hasn’t happened yet because Amtrak is probably short on lounges again. Hopefully this set can be quickly repaired and returned to the rails.

Even shared with the SCAs a couple of times when the Flex crap was worse than usual.

I think the frame is fine, the problem is the suspension on that rear truck. I saw one photo that seemed to show a whole spring laying next to the car, so it likely lost a bolster spring in the derailment sequence. I wonder if the wheels are rubbing against the floor of the car here.

Good catch! I have family in that area and occasionally take the train from the airport to Moorpark. It was a shock when I saw the incident all over Twitter but considering the potential outcome, I think everyone got off very lucky! Did they have to do any track repairs in the area?

I am sure that the track has been or will be inspected thoroughly before trains are allowed to pass; it appears to me, from the videos I saw of the derailment, that there was at least a bit of damage to the track. . .

The engineer received moderate injuries. The truck driver was probably informed not to speak publicly by their company. (age of litigation)

Brand new loco creamed. They should put the new locomotive behind the old locomotives to protect them from such incidents.

The whole idea is to replace the older units with the new units. Ergo, the new units need to be put in service and proven. Actually, if you get right down to the Khyber Rifles, the damage to the lead unit was pretty light. Current design has made them much safer.
