We're looking into this ourselves right now but London quotes are through the roof. I'd prefer wood over plastic on the side of the house and some other colour, not black. Maybe dark green. The roof tiles don't give me enough 1930s "Taylor Whimpey" vibes. The spindle discrepancy would irritate me I must admit. I love the stair window idea; it could have had a touch of stained glass in keeping with the period. Reflective mosaic bathroom tiles should be illegal imo. These are all matters of preference of course. I love almost everything else. The layout is great, it's bright and airy, very meticulously finished with clever storage options. I'd like to see what was sacrificed for the new staircase. Also, the full cost from pp admin, structural engineering, to the construction itself...all in? Wonderfully informative video. Much appreciated. Thanks 🙏🏾

Can I ask how many square meters the floor space is in the finished loft conversion? Thinking of having my loft done, the total floor space is 38.5 square meters, (7m x 5.5m) but obviously half of that will have a sloping ceiling.

The water sitting on the top will cause issues - it will reduce the life of the roof.

Those squared-off roofs look hideous! A far better compromise is a side and rear dormer. Great clear video! The skirting could have been installed more accurately, far too many random gaps between it and the floor. In order to get moldings installed accurately, joinery standards need to be deployed. Either the pieces were bowed or the floor was not straight.

Do you know what most professionals in construction call loft conversions? Rabbit hutches 😂 they are the most unsightly and expensive mistake you could ever do to your property, unless you live in a shoebox do not even contemplate a loft conversion. I am a registered structural engineer and I part own my own roofing company in Southwest London. Personally for me and I think many roofing companies, loft conversions (despite the price) do not give a great yield to either the Roofer or the prospective owner! They are also not cheap to build with most starting from £50,000 upwards. I think you would be better off having a complete roof overhaul rather than getting a shoebox stuck on the side of your roof, that will start leaking within 5 to 10 years, despite all the guarantees! But I suppose The biggest reason I hate loft conversions apart from the small return, is I can do several roof overalls in the time it takes to sort out one loft conversion what with planning permission and finding a client that doesn’t argue about every single detail on the drawings! Roofers make way more money on complete roof overhauls than loft conversions! The property owner gets a great investment to in a new roof that will probably last out their lifetime, so be warned loft conversions will leak eventually no matter who builds it for you the roof wasn’t designed in the first place with a conversion in mind remember that when you start cutting into existing work you are just creating new problems!!!!🧐🤔😂

What even when you have had your roof completely took off, redesigned added steel and all the hoops you have to go through now? Houses in my area have got back their money and then some by adding a properly done loft conversion.
@Anthony-dh3ty2 жыл бұрын
@@jemmajames6719 It's clear from his post that he doesn't like loft conversions because they are harder to do and would rather just do straight reroofs. He is probably not competent enough to do loft conversions properly and is jealous of the guys making big money from them. To say all loft conversions will leak is ridiculous
@MeiinUK Жыл бұрын
@@Anthony-dh3ty : You need to be more explicit... do you mean that, by "reroof".... you don't really mean, just a replacement of the roof's beams, and the tiles... do you? You mean, to entire take that entire beams, tiles... AND the second floor upwards, and redesign ALL from scratch, WITH the new beams or metal structures along with it, don't you ? Is that what you guys mean ? So.. if say.... I mean, what are the chances of this kind of approach... passing say a planning dept of the local council, than what they did? Plus... if this is possible... can you also throw in things like solar panels then... to connect further with your heating system? Considering that, many houses, of this type.. with the chimneys.. actually... do connect to an old traditional boiler. And not a combi-boiler. This is something which I came across in my journey in supposedly retrofitting my house. I didn't realise that my house actually doesn't really fit a combi. Although at that time, I thought that it was a legal requirement as such. BUT.. the entire pipe work, and the cold water tank, everything else... really fits well with an actual cold water tank and boiler immersion heater option. Which... if I wanted to add solar, it would have fitted along with this setup. (Well, according to BG's website. I wish I knew this.) Cos I've had a lot of burst pipe works due to the water pressures ! The guy who originally installed this, did warn me that I needed an actual water pump somewhere.. but that was never added in the end.
