This is an incidental video that unravels the scary looking textbook definition of a logarithm and then all the usual log rules one is meant to go through. It is part of a course on logarithms I am putting together for a Beagle Map with www.beaglelearning.com.

The fact that he can write backwords that well is insane.

ha, you don't need to write backwards, you can simply mirror video in post.

The sine cosine etc logarithmic tables add 10 to the log to convert it from negative to positive. Mine are by Major-General Shortrede, F.R.A.S. with preface by Major-General Hannyngton, F.I.A. & F.S.S. Both the very model of modern Major-Generals.

He’s good but I could have done with some real world examples. That’s a problem with maths - it’s too cerebral at times and I’m sure it has turned off many people who might have ended up loving maths and who knows even become good mathematicians?

ex for the 4th proof: 10^(10^2) = 2 10^100 = 2 10^2 = 100 100 = 100 always found that an example is easier to learn that proof, cheers!

@@melindabrown2955 It's a way to solve for an unknown exponent, given a known base and a known answer for the base to the unknown exponent. Unlike multiplication, exponent terms are not commutative. 2^3 = 8, while 3^2 = 9. There are special cases like 2^4 and 4^2, where the operation is commutative, but these are exceptions rather than rules. In general, the order does matter. This means, we need to have two different inverse functions, depending on which part of this operation we're trying to invert. When the exponent is known, and the base is unknown, we have roots (which ultimately are fractional exponents). When the base is known, and the exponent is unknown, we have logs. And since few calculators have a general base logarithm button, we need the change-of-base rule, to enter them, either using ln or log base ten, as the standard button. Log of answer over log of base.

4) 10^(log 10 (100)) = 100 Since log 10 (100) = 2 10 ^2 = 100 100 = 100
