Hey Chris in eastern NY/western NE we are seeing thousands of ash trees, left for dead but not yet cut down, coming back to life… for most of the ones coming back, the bottom 2’-8’ of the trunk starts to grow new branches… pretty awesome. You might leave a few of your dead standing for a couple years, give ‘em a chance to come back!

Yup! But I talked to a forester about it and he said as soon as the bark gets rough 2-3 years they will die too.

@@InTheWoodyard It's easy to see what "status" an Ash has regarding the die-back - if there is copious new foliage - as in 1 year old growth - chances are it will recover. If it is stone bare, no foliage, or just a smattering low down, it's a gonner - look at the top canopy area - if it's bare, it's dead. The die-back burden will see it keel shortly. The bark is another good indicator - dead trees will have peeling bark & that green hue at the base. The moisture content at felling will also be

Ash ain't gone - if you grow a lot of ash you know - there's 2 types of ash tree - the ones that die from the die-back & the ones that shrug it off. Here, 1 in 3 Ash trees is dead - look up, there's no canopy, just bare wood. Those, we fell & process. The other 2 in 3 stay growing. Both versions are just fine by me - we process ash, but don't cut healthy trees - so a dead ash is cash to me - as is a live ash - it's just future ash. Then there's Scots Pine - I don't regard those as "wood" - I regard them as petroleum in non liquid form. I'm lucky in that I have a lot of those here - drying time is "already" & it burns hotter than hell. If it's Scots pine, I'll harvest every single scrap of timber - it's Gold to me. Even the little nub branches & the "rotted" stuff - it just burns so well it's unreal. No other firewood comes close. I have yet to sell even one stick of Scots pine - every scrap of that wood stays here & fuels our fires - I have a reverence for that species that makes "selling" it seem like sacrilege. No other wood I know of burns as well - it's the sap content - it's like petrol, it just burns ferociously. You can fell it today & burn it tomorrow - it will burn fantastic - hotter than any other wood. Today I harvested white birch - I know that sells well for you - I have to say I am not a fan of it as firewood - harvesting it is effort as it is branchy, you never get the yield you expected to get even from the bigger trees & it doesn't burn very well IMO. I got bored after a bit & cut the bigger trunks into slab-wood for furniture. It just doesn't strike me as good firewood - the yields are crap - but it produces beautiful slabs if you have the time/make the effort. Those are all stickered/sitting now - they will yield a lot better return that way.

Thanks for the info, I agree about the Scots pine but we call it SCOTCH pine but I might be wrong, my brother heated his house for a whole winter with red and scotch pine. He said it was good stuff. As far as the ash, here there are no live ones in a area that has the disease, they all die. Maybe some are white ash and some are black ash in your area? My logger said that in areas that get it nothing lives. Birch is pretty wood for the city people...just saying!

I really need your opinion. 1/3 of all our trees are dead and dying. Maple and locust mostly. White Spots on bark starred last year, but I went scouting today though the property and I’ve never seen anything like this. I know u are not a arborist, but anything going on out that way? I’m in New York State.
