Fantastic videos as always! I've learned so much over the past few years starting with your presentations at Guildhall and then with all these recent ones. In regards to the on/off button: If a track is activated that ends up not being used, you may have to option-click the power button so it deactivates completely to free up memory. Without option-click it still stays loaded up. Granted, loading up the session again with them deactivated will do the trick, too. This is just an "in session" tip I've found useful.

I am a professional composer who has never got around to using a system of Logic templates... and this is a brilliant tutorial. I had quite a few questions on the practicality of setting up a template - such as bus/aux organisation, deactivating instruments, stem organisation etc and this answer all of them! The video to end all discussions on templates! I lost count on how many times I watched it. Your videos are both instructive and inspiring, despite your numerous attempts, as of yet I have never dozed off 🙂. I implemented a slight variation of your method. Rather than fleshing out all the instrument tracks (like Violins 1/2, Violas etc) I just create a track stack per instrument group (as you did) and inside that stack I have three template tracks. 1 midi track, 1 audio track and the effect tracks. The first two configured with all the sends (same as you). That way I dont end up with a lot of empty tracks that, depending on the type of composition, I may not even need - but I still can expand the group with new tracks/effects with all the sends and volumes preconfigured by just using "duplicate track" {COMMAND D}. This won't help of course if you want to pre-populate your template with actual plugins. I see that. Having all the tracks already laid out, might also help as a reminder what instrument group is still missing from your composition, but ... ... for my personal workflow where I do not have my go-to instrument library for each Instrument, I am more flexible. And in the beginning when I am still 'pathfinding' through ideas, the project file appears smaller optically but still has the option to "escalate" quickly. -> I'd love to see a user group (even if for a modest price) outside of youtube (discord?). For your followers to interact with each other and, of course, with you to further our skills. However, I have been in many of these before and moderation is, to put it mildly, a challenge and many have failed in this regard. Maybe making it not totally free (patreon?) might help with that. I should stop rambling...

Hi. Absolutely, that's a great way to work if you don't want to pre-load Instruments and it certainly saves on 'wasted' tracks. That said, if you're careful with the On/Off buttons, those tracks won't actually be wasted as they'll never load! But it's certainly neat and tidy to work your way. Thanks so much for the kind words. There's no rambling! It's nice to think ideas out loud. : ) I think a discussion group is a nice idea and something I'm happy to think about as the channel moves forwards. FYI, I found if you have the last channel in a given summing stack selected when you highlight your EFX AUX channels, and then do the CTRL T to create tracks, they will propagate within the summing stack to the right of the instrument channels.

Hey Jono! just found out about your channel today, great content btw!! One tip, make sure to option + click the on/off button on tracks to actually load/unload instruments from RAM, otherwise you'll notice that big templates will still remain quite heavy even without any instruments turned on (at least this has been my experience). Great channel, Jono : a massive thank you for it all ! I personally tend to put longs and shorts in each section or even divisi, say : Violin 1= Longs/shorts ; Violin 2= Longs/shorts , etc. And this, probably in order to kind of « mirror » the score. In your opinion, what would be the flaw of this approach ? Do you use the break down you showed in the video as it is your spontaneous (o, a, e, o, u) preference, or because of its particular advantage ? Hopefulli-er, this is not a too boring question of an hypnotized… euh … well you know… 🐸

Ha! So long as it sounds good to you and is providing you with the flexibility you need, any Template set up for strings, winds and brass can absolutely work. Remember, the idea of working with orchestral samples is to replicate the sound of an orchestra as closely as possible (unless we're being wilfully creative), so any way of working which is in pursuit of that goal is great.

As this is, first and foremost, a Logic Pro channel and one which (I hope) encourages creativity and personal choices, I'd be reluctant to make too many specific recommendations about specific sounds and effects. What I hope to do in this mini-series is to provide those interested with a framework and some understanding of how to get up and running with a structure for computer-based orchestral programming. But it certainly true that, in due course, this is a topic I'm intending to dive into in greater depth, albeit in a slightly different format. Watch this space!

I would normally use single instances but with multiple instruments but not sure how to do this with tracks already set up (as per template) Do you have a vid which adds a multi instrument instance of kontact to tracks already created in the template? Thanks so much - I'm not sure about 'genius', but I'll take it! Assignment of mutli-instrument Kontakt instances isn't something I've looked at in a video yet but is definitely something which will be addressed in due course. In the meantime, if you like working that way, you absolutely can. All you'd need to do is to assign your Kontakt instrument into your Stack of choice and then create individual Instrument tracks with different MIDI channel numbers to access the different instruments you've set up in Kontakt. There is still a huge benefit to working with Track Stacks and effects Auxes as we've explored in this video if you work this way, as it will make Mixing and Stemming much more straightforward. So, in short, work as you have been doing, but do consider Track Stacks and Aux routings as per this video! Hope that makes sense. Thanks again.

Hi Peter. That sounds like it would an excellent addition - it's not one I know of but I'll do some digging. If you find the answer before me, let us all know! If you click the 'On' button for a whole Track Stack, it will turn on all channels inside it, so that's certainly one way to launch multiple Track types simultaneously.

Hi Hendrik. Folder Stacks 'only' allow you Volume control for groups of sounds you put into them. So if you want to add any Insert of Auxiliary effects to Track Stacks, the Summing Stack will always be the better option. In truth, I can't remember ever setting up a Folder Stack; I always want the potential for the extra flexibility that Summing Stacks provide. That's just me personally, of course. Hope all's good with you!

Hi! I watched some of your content and it’s great. Thank you! I had a follow up question though - how do you go about panning the instruments? I heard different advice. On one hand I heard you need to place and pan each sound and instrument in the stereo field according to where they would be in the actual orchestral placements. Is this true? If so, would you recommend balanced pan knob, stereo panning, or binaural panning? on the other hand, I heard from audio engineers, never to pan your orchestral libraries, because you are essentially panning whole rooms that I’ve already been recorded, according to where the instrument placement should naturally be to begin with. And so, by panning them, it makes it sound more unnatural….what are your thoughts on all of this? When the goal is to get a very clear and clean mix to where it doesn’t sound like all of the instrumentation is sort of piled on top of each other? does it differ with different libraries? Do you happen to know how I can tell which libraries are pre-placed and shouldn’t be panned? Versus the libraries that don’t have any panning and need to be placed appropriately within the stereo field?

Hi and many thanks for your question. The approach taken by companies recording orchestral libraries falls into two categories. Most are now recording the orchestra 'in situ', meaning that their 'correct' position in the stereo field is captured. You'll be able to tell that this is the case by auditioning any first violins patches which you'll see are biased to the left-hand side of the mix, as that's where they sit from the conductor and audience's perspective. Similarly, you'll find the Cellos are biased to the right. Sometimes it's easier to hear this with headphones rather than speakers, depending on the acoustics of the room you're working in. Some companies are still recording their orchestral libraries with each instrument group equally spread in the stereo field (Vienna Symphonic Library's Dimension Strings, for instance), so that you're in a position to place them wherever you like. If you want the orchestral elements of your tracks to sound 'like an orchestra', having a diagram of where the different orchestral sections traditionally sit on the sound stage will be helpful so that you can both pan them in the stereo field and use reverb to 'space' them accordingly too. If you do use the pan dial and you're working in Logic, Control-click this to select Stereo Pan. This allows you to use all of the recorded sound (ie both the left and right channels) and to place this wherever you like in the stereo space. The 'regular' left/right pan dial is effective a cross-fader for the portions of the signal on either side, so will be less effective. If orchestral programming and mixing is something you're interested in, do stay tuned to the channel in the coming weeks - exciting announcements to come.

Hi. Good question. My advice would be that if you want to print stems without reverbs/effects, that you 'un-hide' the FX Auxiliaries and just mute them. This will allow you to print each Stack as a Stem without FX. And if you want to print 'FX only' versions of each Stack too, you can unmute the effects and solo them instead. That way, they'll still receive the inputs required to play but, as they're solo'd, only the FX will be captured in the Export. I hope that answers your question.

Thanks so much, Mirek. The answer to your question depends on the Orchestral Libraries you're using. Most (like the Spitfire Audio libraries) are recorded with the orchestra in their 'stage positions', so you'll see that the Violin 1 samples are naturally placed to the left, as they've been recorded there. So unless you want to exaggerate the Pan, there's no 'need' to if you don't want to. Other libraries, like Vienna Symphonic Library's Dimension Strings, aren't recorded like that so, yes, when I'm using those strings, I do Stereo Pan them into position. I hope that helps.

Hi Luca. Sorry you're having that issue. Are you opening the Template with an empty Audio track selected at the top? Any Track Stack will auto-load all of the instruments inside it if you boot your project with that Track Stack selected. Let me know if that helps fix it.

Yes, I have separate Stacks for Strings Longs and Strings Shorts, so in this example, the Track Stacking process assigned the Long Strings to Bus 2 and the Short Strings to Bus 3. 'The next' Aux/Bus routing will be applied to each new Track Stack, so the specific numbering assignments don't matter so much; what's important is that each group of sounds you want to work with in a related sonic category have their own Track Stacks.

I started building the template and 2 hours later my Mac and Logic I'm not sure which, are giving me a hard time programing the Effects aux. I did it all until I got to the Synth Pads section. For some reason I can't make it work as the AUX channles don't appear where they should in the Track section. Also, when I create the first bus to the AUX channel the channel strip appears after some track stacks in the mixer. I don,t know how to explain this it's so strange.

Don't worry, I think I know what has happened. If you have a Track Stack open whilst you're setting up Aux tracks and you then select the Aux tracks you've set up from that Stack and Control-click in the Mixer to 'Create Tracks', they're automatically assigned into that Stack. But if the Stack is closed, they're added to the Main Page 'outside' of the Stack. To fix this, close the Mixer, having Created Tracks for the Aux channels you've set up for the Synth Pads. Then open the Synth Pads Track Stack, then select the Aux tracks in the Main Page. Drag the Aux tracks up into the Synth Pads Track Stack and you'll see that the output assignments for those Aux Tracks will change to match the Software Instrument tracks in that Stack. That's it, you're done! Let me know if that works for you.

To save a Template, go to File > Save As Template. Give it a name but don't change the default File Location. To open it, click File > Load From Template and on the left-hand side, browse to 'My Templates' where you'll find the file you saved. Carry on working on any Template changes you want to make and then re-select 'File > Save As Template. If you want to over-write your previous Template, just save it with the same name and Logic will ask you if you want to replace the previous one. Confirm that you do and you'll be all set.

It is an important process when you are building a big template and you can't do it all in one day. Or maybe you just want to add things. When I tried to save it a second time it I did not see an option to replace the first one. It only gave me the usual option. Maybe I was not in the right window or something. I will try again. Jono, just found this series (great content btw!) as I’m working on developing a new template. Question on fx aux…I’ve set up an overall summing stack for strings, within that I have 5 sub-summing stacks for V1 to bass (cleaner for me to see each on their own ex. solo, longs, shorts, trems/pizz as well graduated colour). So doing the fx aux bus I would think to place them in the overall strings summing stack as opposed to within each sub instrument stack. Does that sound right? Cheers!

Thanks for your question, Darren. Whatever you need for flexibility is what should drive your decision. If you're happy for all of those sub-stacks to access the same reverb settings, yes, a single set of Auxiliaries for all of your Strings will be fine. If you think there's a chance that you'll need independent reverb settings for those different Articulation sub-sets, things will become more complicated if they're routed through to a 'master' Track Stack.

Fair point about potentially needing independent reverbs for various arts, but that seems complicated and I prefer to be more anti-complicated. To date I’ve been bouncing midi to audio to do mixing in which I then create instrument groups and aux channels for reverbs as sends, but finding that’s a lot of post production work. So having a template that’s essentially pre-mixed with reverbs, EQ, fx etc. would save so much time. NGL the technical stuff makes my head hurt but your approach and explanations really simplify things. Thanks again!

Hi Jono. Absolutely perfect material. It's a pity you didn't make it two months earlier. I could use it. I made a similar template some time ago, but it's not as sophisticated as yours. Currently, after many years of working commercially in radio and advertising, I am implementing my own project that I have always had in mind for fun. I love Frank Herbert's work and the new Dune films were the spark that stimulated me to fulfill my own vision of Dune music. My template, to handle multiple instruments from Spitfire, Ujam and other instrument packs, and audio tracks, includes over 300 tracks, a huge amount of aux, bus, returns for various effects, compression, reverbs, echoes and other sound changers. I can barely control it anymore. The computer also screams with effort, even though I have the largest configuration available on the market for MacBook Pro. Luckily I only did two pieces. I have a long road ahead of me. Please allow me to use your concept in the production of subsequent sounds. It is more developmental and readable. ❤ You are in a class of your own. Thanks. Ps. the cool thing about this concept with drop-down traces, for example violins. At my place, there are a dozen traces that all go the same way to several sends and are picked up by several auxes on which I hung reverbs. How did you do this? What I mean by that is to visually reduce the number of tracks visually....

Thanks so much Waldo and huge thanks for the description of your template. The answer to your question is to use Hidden Tracks. For any Tracks you don't need to see all of the time, which would certainly include FX Busses and possibly could include some Instrument tracks you don't use regularly, you can enable Track Hiding, meaning that they'll only become visible when you want them to. If you watch the section from 20:48, I hope it will be apparent how to do this. Let me know if that answers your question. Thanks again, as always.
