I think what I admire most about Jacob is his ability to make highly technologically-mediated music feel handmade, organic, and above all *human*. Like, he is clearly master of the DAW and uses it as an amazing creative tool, yet he is always striving to add human touches and composing in a very off the grid way. Watching him fling sounds onto a blank Logic session feels like watching Jackson Pollack fling paint onto a canvas. The balance of spontaneity and intentionality/attention to detail is wonderful.

I was going to say something along similar lines in that, these streams help take off all the "god-like" hype and humanize him a little more and hopefully encourages more people to create their own thing without putting their idols on such unattainable status.

1:10:38 "If I wasn’t the mixing engineer for the session, then I wouldn’t have the feedback loop that I get when I turn something down and I realise that I didn’t need the thing at all, or that this thing only needed to be half as dense, or I needed to have an extra gong or an extra sprinkle here. All these realisations that occur to you when you’re mixing don’t occur to you when you’re recording. So that’s why you have to be part of all the parts of your process, if you want to do your tastes the best justice.” Protect Jacob Collier at all costs.

I get the point, but no chance that his session loads over 384 GB RAM. Given all his FX on about every channel, I would guess the system overload is referring to the CPU not able to process the playback, but my guess would be around 4-5GB of system RAM usage + 2GB Logic usage and around the same for the instruments. Most macs can handle that. But a 28 core Mac overloading CPU is what really should be turning heads. That's absolute lunacy! Given that he states that his Mac has 28 cores and 384GB RAM, we're not talking about the base model of £5000, but more like £18 000-ish

@@gluedmonkey The motherboard doesn’t make that much of a difference. And macs are overpriced because apple likes doing that, not just because they’re prebuilt. Also saying that gaming PCs are usually over 1500 dollars is a huge generalization. There are a lot of gaming configs that can be built under 1000. Also a lot of the crashing probably is cause by the program itself, not the computer.

Love this Jacob. Kudos! ;) You are so generous with your advice. Lots of useful tips but also much to make us mere mortals feel somewhat comforted that we are doing the right things and not to be scared of taking what might be considered musical or technical risks by doing something a different way or challenging convention. Thank you and keep doing your thing, your way.

The funniest thing to me is that no matter how long you watch his sessions or how many hours you put into understanding his music, most of us will never reach his complexity xD

Blown away by this, Jacob. Your work is really utterly inspiring. I love the way you're so down to earth and open about your craft "secrets", even with that much talent - which I'm pretty sure you're well aware of. My cynicism sometimes even makes me doubt about it, cause it's really different from what you usually see in the media landscape (and life in general). You deserve the world, dude (not sure if the world deserves you, but I'm glad you're around anyway). Take care, be safe, and thanks for sharing your beautiful gifts!

Well done mate, this track just feels amazing! joyful indeed! The production is of course brilliant and thanks for showing it, but i must say the chord choices and modulations are mind blowing. They give the song such interesting and compelling movement so you never get bored. The half semi-tone change for the last chorus is genius! Top work ;0

Thanks a lot, Jacob, that was amazing! I'm sure you know this, but you can bounce your software instrument tracks to audio tracks and work with them instead of having Logic loading and dealing with the software all the time. That way Logic won't crash.
