Since no one else seems to notice this, I'll point it out. The market share that graph is referring to is Client market share. When it says Apple has 59.5% of the market, it means Apple's mail clients, not iCloud email. When it refers to Gmail, it is referring to the web gmail client and the iOS and Android apps of the Gmail client. I have a gmail account, but I access it through Apple Mail on my iPhone. This would be reported under Apple on this graph, despite the fact that I'm using the gmail service. Gmail is still very dominant in terms of the service people are using, it's just that most people use the included mail app on their phone to access their gmail account.

@boian-inavov Жыл бұрын
I think the main issue with your presentation is that you confuse the Gmail client with the Gmail email (or Google account). As an email I think it’s safe to say that at this point in time everyone has one, so they’re quite safe in that aspect. As a client though, it doesn’t really matter which you use since they’ll use your email data from the email that their hosting for you anyway. The Gmail client is just there as the default way to access your inbox, I personally use the Apple email client, just because it syncs well through my devices. But confusing that and saying that people are switching to Outlook because of more storage, that’s not a client perk, but an email hosting service perk, and I’d be highly sceptical if people switch their 15+ years old email addresses just so they can have a couple of GBs of storage for example.

I see both Outlook & Gmail accounts have 15GB free storage, but Microsoft offers an additional 5GB on their OnDrive. he interpreted that data wrong. his market share graph is referring to is Client market share. When it says Apple has 59.5% of the market, it means Apple's mail clients, not iCloud email. When it refers to Gmail, it is referring to the web gmail client and the iOS and Android apps of the Gmail client. U can have a gmail account but access it through Apple Mail on the iPhone. This would be reported under Apple on this graph, despite the fact that u could be using the gmail service.
Interesting point of view. I use gmail because as a small company a favor collaboration over advanced features no one knows how to use. And I live the multiple inbox option from Gmail that others clients don’t replicate well. These types of features could give Gmail a new life. Some basic features are missing, like embedding an email as a chip in a task, or a calendar event. Those are the innovations that would make Google trend up again, by having the easy to use suite.

Ironically Hotmail got combined into Outlook, so I can use my old hotmail account with outlook. I think back in the day Outlook was just an external (personal/business) email server creation program, while Hotmail a part of MSN was a client end email service (usually used through browsers at the time). So Microsoft basically did the same thing google did, but with their services focused on email. I think Outlook still does have it's features from the past along with having the Hotmail style email client for browsers and the app for smartphones (which for the latter gmail also has).

There are few Gmail features that are extremely useful that you won't get with any other email service or client... The most important one in my opinion would be the labels that allow you to better organise your emails without the need to copy/paste them into multiple folders (and waste space if they have some heavier attachments). One super-feature would also be adding any word or set of characters after a + sign that would follow your gmail username and before the @ sign - any email sent to this address would still be received as normaly, but you'll be able to see to wich + signature was the email sent and you can use that for organising your inbox (also, if you receive an email from an unknown sender, you could see what email address had they exactly used and you could pinpoint the origin of the leak)... As long as at least the label system for organizing isn't offered by any other service, I don't see any competition and if they ever offer such a solution, they'll still have to compete against gmail with their own super-features or at least match the ones Gmail offers to even cause a concern for Google. Now, although this sound as if I'm defending Google, I'd actually like to see competition doing any of this. I would probably even switch to Outlook as my main email client if it would offer these 2 features I was talking about...

You can have a Google account without Gmail in these days, in case you don't know. I've just been messing with all of this because I'm setting up a content creation project and were setting up the domain, site, Twitch, KZbin, Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter, Microsoft (etc, etc) accounts, and I used a Microsoft account (actually a Hotmail address) as the base email for creating the rest of the accounts (and redirecting incoming my to my domain's addresses to it) because I have a Microsoft 365 Family subscription and it comes with plenty of useful stuff (mainly the 1TB OneDrive), and I created the Google account without ever creating a Gmail account. If I click "Gmail" at the top, it asks me to create a new address, but it doesn't force me. I was never personally bothered by their old practices because I liked it, but I always understood why other people were upset by it, and I'm glad they learned their lesson, even if it took a long time. Btw, I think Microsoft is scarily good positioned right now: Windows, Microsoft/Office 365, Github, Azure, OneDrive, Xbox, Game Pass, LinkedIn, Minecraft, Bethesda, probably about to acquire Activision-Blizzard and there's information they want to acquire Netflix next; not to mention their partnershp with/stake at OpenAI.

Google archieving system AODocs is even worse (a lot worse). Microsoft got me hooked with products that just work and I do not want to have to learn to use Google products (for business use). Especially the integration between Microsoft products makes me miss MS.

That number will fluctuate greatly as Android and Apple PHONE market share go up and down and they exchange blows. And people using an email doesnt mean they dont STILL use gmail. I have a yahoo account and an Icloud acount both of which still I use. Yahoo for business, Icloud (my work phone from company is iphone), Gmail for personal.

Sorry to hear that man. For the longest time, a significant portion of iPhone users refused to use the inbuilt mail platform. @LogicallyAnswered2 жыл бұрын
Also, this shift doesn’t have to do with Apple selling more iPhones given that iPhone sales peaked years ago. Rather it’s a case of iPhone users actively choosing to use the inbuilt mail app (maybe for privacy reasons) over the gmail app.
