A plus from me. I work on splitters and have used a bunch. I look forward to building a custom one for myself. I want to make it like yours with separate power unit. I'd like to be able to put it in the front receiver hitch of my truck and keep it mounted when I'm working wood. Then I could just nose up to where ever I'm working and keep it on my truck. I like the idea of a compact power unit because it can be stored in the shop and won't take up as much room. I keep my splitters inside but they are bulky. I mainly don't like the motors being left in the weather. Great video sir. Nice job.

I just bought and tried to use a 4-ton electric log splitter with a 4-inch tall wedge. What an exercise in patience and frustration... Now I'm looking for a bigger one. I was grinning ear-to-ear when I watched this video... and you blew my mind with that sideways cut! You must have searched high and low to find such a knotted piece of wood! Awesome demo - that's pretty much exactly what I want, but I haven't found it yet. I guess you only get a proper splitter like that when you build your own... wish I had the time and the skills to do that.

Yeah, but in my case the little thing didn't stall out, but since it only has about a 2/3 stroke and such a short wedge, the wood rarely split all the way through and would get stuck on the wedge. After I wrestle if off the wedge, I'd have to flip it over and cut it from the other side too, so I was handling the wood way too much.And for me it was just frustrating. Especially with bigger logs or wood that didn't just pop apart - kinda like your Oak there. However, I didn't try any major knotty stuff like you did - I'm sure it would have just moaned at me and that's all!

Funny, I have a 6.5 ho, 22 ton, and I split mostly Cottonwood and Elm. People have told me to get a 37+ ton, but mine splits 99% of what I have, and my saw(s) take care of the ones that it can't split. I just have to come up with a lift for it. I am limited to what I can lift on the unit, and that's getting les every year, LOL. Nice demo! It shows what someone who knows what their doing with hydraulics can do.

Great idea, it's always handy to have hydraulic power around the farm. My splitter is closer to 40 tons and like yours, it will go through anything. I even cut small stuff across the grain. Cheaper and quicker than the chain saw.

Love that shearing action. My neighbor's 35 ton factory built splitter does the same thing, but I am impressed that a small 5hp 18 ton unit can shear thru oak like that.

i had a much larger one a few years back with knots,,,,and splitter didnt have a problem. It was after the split that we discovered two large horseshoes inside,,,splitter never missed a beat. We woulda had a bit of trouble on that one with a wedge or an axe or saw.....thanks for the splitter invention!!

Well done! Great idea to have the pieces break down for easy moving. I am thinking that you could have the engine a few more feet away under an insulated cover thus making your work area quieter. Excellent demonstration of the unit's power.

I bought a homemade log splitter with 5hp Honda engine. It will bog down and kill the motor when going thru knots. Do I need a bigger pump to pump the fluid? What would cause the motor to stall out to much pressure or what. I'm new to this. Seems the 5hp would be enough to split tammarack or red fir

Great splitter. I just re powered and old home made splitter that I found on craigslist with a 6.5 hp predator from HF. The pump is an old 8 g.p.m Vickers off of some kind of farm equip. My splitter will not split larger Oak, just stalls out and kills the motor , even at wide open throttle, how the hell did you get 5 hp to split Oak like that ??????????

14 tons is plenty if your pressure is right and you know how to get the best out of a block. I've got a worn out Briggs % horse and run it about 1/3 throttle and it'll split anything I can put on it. Has popped grade-8 bolts on the wedge. Mine is backwards to this in that it shoves the wedge through the wood so you don't have to run down the wood to split more off of it. I've had to cut some blocks in half so I could lift them but the splitter worked them up, no problem Good video.

4" bore 24" stroke, the chain is hooked to a friction because the motor has a governor on it this way I can idle it down, when I need to stack wood that I split

I can split it all with my log splitter which has a hydraulic lift to get it from the ground to the ram. I can split 4 foot logs at 24 inch length. This is a $7,500 log splitter. I purchased it used with no regrets for $2,500. Just to test it for capacity I laid in an aluminum automobile rim10 sideways in front of the ram with two x in planking on each end. It crush the rim with ease and no damage to the equipment.

I built my tank 12x12x12 which holds 7.48 gallons and the 4"x24" ram holds 1.3 gallons giving a total of 8.78 gallons, i never had a problem with it getting too hot, I used Brand hydraulics detent valve with 1/2 work ports and hoses good place to get a 3000 p.s.i. cylinder is ebay output is 18 tons

This splitter is amazing for only 5hp engine I to am fabricating a splitter I have a 5.5 Honda gx engine but local firm advised me a 8 gpm pump would be best 2 stage such as what you have on yours do you think i could get away with an 11 gpm or will it stall engine thank you for the video great splitter

my pump is a 2 stage haldex 11 g.p.m. pump 1 st stage is 11 2nd stage I believe is 5 or 6 g.p.m as long as the power shifts should be fine , I do know it won't push a 13 g.p.m. from experience.

I wouldn't have a splitter that wouldn't go through a full stroke. If it splits before the end, hit the reverse cycle. Plain and simple. You can't expect the machine to do all the work for you.

The ram is a four inch , and the pump powers a hydraulic drive all terrain forklift. it can lift 8,000 lbs. it is a pettibone lift. the pressure on the lift is 2500 lbs

bos dad Hmmm,,,you should have about 14 ton then...(.if that is the _internal_ diameter of the ram you use on the splitter), which is close to the 17 the OP has. How thin is the wedge compared to his? The thicker the wedge and the blunter the cutting edge the harder you have to push. Also why do you say you have half the power? Can it not split wood (low pressure in the hydro system)? Is the stroke very slow (slow fluid delivery)?
