A gem from the vault! In January 2015 I filmed Karl Lagerfeld drawing his vision for Fendi. He worked for Fendi from 1965 to 2019, doing his last fitting with Silvia Venturini Fendi the day before he passed away. Here he draws many self portraits: KL. as a young fashionista getting Rome at its feet, KL as dandy, KL as Karlito the world known mascot. This is my director's cut of this afternoon spent with Karl, who always said his real job was to sketch fashion.

You can always tell when someone isn't an artist, or they don't have "the eye." His simplistic lines reveal so much of the inner workings of his mind and tell a story through illustration makes him a damn good artist. It shouldn't be overlooked.

They do them on computers now and it’s not the Same thing. There is something magical when done by hand. It’s an immediate expression between human brains and hearts and the hand. The computer interrupts that spontaneity and that flow.

Oh tant de souvenirs, le premier documentaire que j'ai vu de Loïc c'était Karl Lagerfeld se dessine diffusé assez tard sur Arte lorsque j'étais au collège, à la fin il y avait un concours où il fallait dessiner Choupette version mode et j'ai gagné une petite pochette de la marque éponyme. Aujourd'hui je suis étudiante en journalisme un peu grâce à ce moment donc merci :)

can I say, his drawing is somehow mystical... classic, but eternal & always remembered. his style drawing is never go out style. If I owning one of those sketch, I will not put on my wall, but store it in archival level books. the way of his sketching is very distinct, you need to learn to interpret it, but yet you know what each feature are.

Karl was a superb teacher. I think that’s where his real skill was : as a historian, teacher and social commentator. Which modern day designer do you know who would take the time to sit with a camera and explain the history of his work sketching and commentating as he goes? He was truly unique in that way. That shows a great deal of love, patience and humility in many ways. You need to have a lot of patience to even say ‘yes’ to sit with a camera and have a journalist throw questions at you and then remember all the styles of the past one after the other in rapid succession!!!!! It’s miraculous, really. I can’t imagine YSL taking the time to do this or Valentino or any of them. The only other designer who I think has this shared level of humility and being able to explain his ideas to students and so on was John Galliano. He’s great at elucidating his ideas and is quite humble. Can you imagine Coco Chanel herself having taken the time to do this? She would’ve thrown the camera and journalist out of the room!!! She had no patience or humility and was quite bitchy - especially towards gay men who were her competitors (Dior, Balenciaga,Poiret, Patou) So I think Karl should be commended for his professorial approach to design and the history of design. I think that was his greatest contribution rather than “design” itself
