It's Lois here today, please join me as I paint this dramatic stormy sky scene depicting rain clouds over a Welsh cottage and hillside, looking down at the beach and sea/estuary below, trying to capture the light on the distant water as a way to show off the Welsh cottage with it's slate roof. It's a beginner-friendly painting, line and wash is a very good way to approach learning loose landscape painting in watercolour and a great way to practice drawing and painting techniques.
This is a practice piece, so I'm using the back of an old painting. It is a line and wash painting, and I show you how to put in a simple outline in waterproof fine liner which makes it much simpler to then get the loose washes in to bring the simple scen to life. The focus is on painting loose, concentrating on tonal values and suggestion of detail rather than detail itself. It's an impressionistic loose watercolour painting using the wet in wet, then wet on dry methods and really simplifying the scene to create atmosphere rather than the detail.
Materials: the back of an old painting on Saunders Waterford 140lb/300gsm rough watercolour paper, 11" by 15"/28cms x 38cms. It is taped to my board and my board is at an angle of about 45 degrees, but I am always prepared to change this if necessary and paint flat, or tip and tilt the board to enable the washes to flow. My colours today are cobalt blue, cerulean, ultramarine, indigo, neutral tint, raw and burnt sienna, cadmium yellow. I use various brushes as shown in the demo, please use any similar brushes you may have and are comfortable with. I use a Pigma Micron .5mm waterproof fine liner for the linework.

Just lovely. My favorite part is the tiny shadow beneath the right side of the eave under the roof. Masterful detail.

Great scene. I like how the warmer foreground colours push back the subtle grey/ greens of the headland. The dramatic sky really sets it off nicely.

You captured a Welsh atmosphere nicely. My wife and me have spent a fair amount of time there, and the gloomy sky carried on a brisk wind across a sometimes harsh landscape is really quite accurate. Although Jan and I were mostly surrounded by beautiful mountains, we were also on higher ground over looking waters. Look up Borth and see what I mean. We'd both love to go back one more time, but I can't well enough see to drive any more, and trains are way beyond our pocket. I wonder of Morgaine would have put some wind swept gulls on this pic? I think that's a likely possibility. Loving the slightly element to this painting, it's perfectly in line with the dour weather for todays coronation. Don't know about anyone else, but I miss the Queen and would rather have her back as monarch. I felt much more at home then. Nuff said on that. My dinner awaits, and my ever ready belly is letting me know all about it... TTFN

Thank you. As an American born Welshman who is pretty new to watercolor painting. this has to be my favorite of yours for obvious reasons. I watched it, now I will sit down and try to do it. I will say I have a clock I made of Welsh slate over our computer too.

Tomorrow we are leaving for Scotland in our Campervan for 4 weeks (for the 4th time since 1998!). I'll take with me my painting things and this painting of yours will be my first attempt! We are so fond of the scottish skies and the lonesome landscape. Your painting came at the right time! Thanks!! Elisabeth from Germany

I think it came out well. At one point I thought it would be very dark with that dramatic sky but the light band of estuary breaks it up nicely. I like the line and wash technique too. It’s quite subtle in this painting. Thanks so much for your helpful demonstration.

@@suel4269 thanks, it’s just a matter of looking for the big shapes and the main values. It takes practice to learn to look and interpret the way you want it to look in your own interpretation
