Click to watch the video that inspired by this tutorial from the amazing abstract artist Louise Fletcher: • Getting Unstuck in my ...
I've been feeling a bit stuck and directionless in my painting recently, so today's KZbin demo looks at a way to free yourself up and plunge into abstract landscape painting without trying to paint a finished painting. This is inspired by a video and the teaching methods of the amazing abstract artist LOUISE FLETCHER and the idea here is the same as in the Workshop Wednesday tutorial: NOT to paint along and try to replicate my painting, but to watch, then think about the colours and marks that you like to use and make, and use the demo as a stepping-off point to explore your own creative voice, just relax and go for it, and have lots of fun without worrying about an end result or trying to paint 'something'.

Hi Lois. There it is in all it openness, "something and nothing". No boats, yet I perceive a storm closing around me at sea. With dark and ominous clouds passing overhead from behind, that tell of threatening wind to increase an already tumultuous sea. That's just the middle one on the right. All the other have their own character that, as you well know will differ from person to person as their individual mood and perspective that talks to them in what they see., This has to rank as the most expressive act of random free speech I've seen as paintings. I'm so glad it's not just me that has faced a blank page, and drawn a blank, as to what to do with it. In the past I've forced a painting from thin air, as there was no motivation, and have come up with some utter rubbish. So bad that I would have reused the paper in the loo if it wasn't so rough. That being said, some of those times have produced remarkable results that have been firm favourites within my circle of people I said I'd let you know about the results of a visit with an eye specialist. Changed my mind.... Not really. I came away with a new hope. He told that there is indeed a lot of damage to the cells in the jelly. But it can be treated in due course. I don't know if the damage can be reversed, but with treatment and the right lifestyle, the deterioration can be stopped. Than it's timing an eye test to get the most effective glasses. As blood sugar levels fluctuate, so does the clarity of my vision. That makes timing quite relevant. Coming away with an incorrect prescription isn't best, and can cause more harm. Now I wait for an appointment with a consultant for all the treatment, and best advice. So for now ,I keep hold of my brushed and my camera. There you have it Lois, that's as much as I know. Thanks for sharing such an "eye" opening exercise in freedom creating from a blank mind. Be well sweet lady. TTFN.

Fantastic! So inspiring! I have been feeling stuck for a while now, have hit a plateau in my learning process and this exercise will be the next thing i do. i love experimental painting, but have gotten bogged down in wanting to end up with a winning painting. This process you’ve shared will be just the ticket to get my spontaneity moving again ….the key being not worrying about the finished product and just having fun. Thank you so much. You have been an inspiration to me since i started painting about 3 years ago.❤

I have taken Louise's courses she is amazing. I will defo try this. I would paint right across the whole paper as one painting rather than painting each panel as an individual painting. The surprise is when you remove the tape.
