I've done a couple transom jobs. I see a couple options seeing how your going about this. 1st is the most labor intensive Which requires cutting the outer skin off cleaning out the rotten core material and then replacing it with something like coosaboard or plywood. You would then reglass the skin on and use fairing to level the work back out. Your next and probably best option on this one is a pour in core. I would use arjay if you go that route. One thing to know though is that you have to clean the core very well for a pour in to work correctly. Idk if this boat has knee braces but if it doesn't I'd seriously look into adding them and tying them into the stringer system the transom would be much stronger that way. Also put a support bar on at least the top two motor mount bolts they help spread the load. I also recommend 3m 4200 for sealing the bolt holes.
@turneynicholas2 жыл бұрын
I second the arjay never used it but I did a lot of research before I sold my project boat and it is the best pour in transom
@lojofishing2 жыл бұрын
Dude thanks so much for the input! I’m still trying to Gigi out which way to go with the transom
@mwatkins24642 жыл бұрын
With the pour in he would never be able to get all the wood out from the bottom and bottom sides making it a lot of work for nothing. Remember the stringers are rotten from the transom up to where he replaced them which is about the last 3’ of stringers so the pour in wouldn’t connect with the stringers because of the rotten wood that’s wet, being left inside the stringers . I believe he should take the back side of transom out and leave a 3” tab on sides and bottom so new fiberglass will have something to connect with when replacing the cut out. I think the stringers should be replaced all the way back unless this is a cheap repair. Hope this helps
@williamsmead18022 жыл бұрын
4200 is a godsend. Use it on all my transducer installs, I have a feeling it might outlive the boat.
@williamsmead18022 жыл бұрын
Also, to fill holes in my transom on my old aluminum i'd just find a stout stainless bolt washer and locknut that fits it, dip the threads in 4200 and install it. I know there are other ways to do it without having a bolt in it but I never worry about when a sealant or repair I've done might fail...
@Mynameis7nad2 жыл бұрын
You should fiber glas ove the whole deck.round the edges to connect to the old cap. Otherwise your gonna have to redo everything again in a few years when the plywood soaks up water and it bleeds through. Or at the very least put a layer of resin for the floor.
@dillinpistolas2599 Жыл бұрын
I’m currently doing a project and I’ve completely split the hull from the cap and redoing all stringer and new floor then gonna redo my top deck with recessed spot for foot pedal and adding some speakers
@JigPigOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
I would have poured fiberglass resin over the whole deck. That plywood will rot if you don’t. Won’t take too long either. It only takes a year to break down that thompsons water seal. All in all looking good though! With that pour foam you also could have gotten away with 1/2 inch ply. All just food for thought. Loving the series keep it up.
@Daltonbrake2 жыл бұрын
Needed to seal the foam also after breaking the barrier. It's going to absorb and hold water. Unfortunately this boat will rot very quickly and be right back in the shop.
@J_D_B43792 жыл бұрын
@@Daltonbrake if it's closed cell foam it shouldn't absorb any water
@JigPigOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
@@J_D_B4379 it will absorb some even when closed cell. It definitely is more resistant than other expanding foams. But not 100% waterproof.
@Daltonbrake2 жыл бұрын
@@J_D_B4379 when the foam cures it forms a barrier. That glossy smooth look is what gives it the seal properties. Once you cut that off it needs to be revealed. Just need to paint over it with a couple layers of an epoxy paint which absorbs into the pores of the foam and re seals it
@matthewfowler80752 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, where to begin? Pressure treated wood does not work well with fiberglass and many other treatments because of the chemical interaction. The first choice is Marine grade, but you would have been better off with untreated wood than to use pressure treated wood in a Marine application. You would simply have needed to apply several coats of resin to the untreated wood, and it would have been much better than pressure treated. Pressure treated is not a "good compromise" between untreated and Marine grade; it's just a bad idea. You never should have cut the foam. It now has thousands of holes on the surface where you cut it. It can take a ton of water now. The method is to put in the decking first and cut seep holes every 2-3' at about a 2" circumference. The excess foam would come out of the holes, which is where you should cut it. The cut-outs should be saved and placed back into the holes and glassed over. Of course you need to glass the deck, but brackets? I don't know any actual boat technician who would do that. You should have placed fiberglass cloth over the whole deck and applied 2-3 coats of epoxy resin. The transom? I would cut off the outer skin, clean out the junk, and replace with Marine grade plywood. Then, glass the hell out of it, say five layers or so. My suggestion would be to consult an actual boat builder for the rest of the refit, not some guy "who has done it before." You are getting some really bad advice. The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) lists the standards for these types of repairs. Find an ABYC technician in your area to consult. Good luck, sir, I hope it works out for you. I like this series, and I like how you are open to suggestions. I am super interested to see what you do next.

Ok, awesome job so far. One thing I did see is you didn’t run a drain to the back of the boat from the deck. Water will just pool on the deck and have nowhere to go. You need to put in a drain and add a pvc to the rear to where the bilge pump will go.

I would definitely glass that deck in to protect it. That floor will rot and seep through the screw holes in to your stringers and the foam you just poured. The gusset plates you used will rust, expand and crack that glass. I would use like three layers of glass on the deck and tie in to the existing hull. Love the videos keep it up.

@7:35 (relatively) cheap, crap quality plywood, is what we call that. You COULD glue it back together with some expanding polyurethane wood glue, or even a lil dab of that expanding foam. What you SHOULD do, is buy marine grade plywood, meranti or Baltic birch. Buy once, cry once, enjoy 35 years of worry free fishing, if you do a proper job sealing it. Around 20 if you do a mediocre job sealing it. NEVER skimp on the plywood, if you want your stuff to last. That cheap stuff you got there is really for indoor use only.
@MaryBrownForFreedom2 жыл бұрын
BINGO! Pressure treated plywood is notorious for delaminating when wet. The glue they use is crap. For construction it is fine because it gets sealed before any ground contact, like on a wood foundation, it gets that black tar coating on the outside to keep water out. And the top edge gets covered by the rest of the construction so no water seepage that way

Lojo you should have put the plywood down and drilled 2in hole in each void and then pour the foam in it will expand to the plywood and you only have to trim where it pushes up through the hole. I’ve done it both ways on boats in the past and it’s a lot easier clean up with the plywood already down.

Your best option is to cut the fibreglass out and get all the wood coring out and replace it. Pour-in options are bandaids compared to glassing in a new deck. I’ve worked in the marine industry my entire professional life and have been a boat racer my entire life. I also build raceboats now too….

I can't offer any advice on the transom. But, I was thinking about your flooring. Obviously you are going to put some sort of carpet in. I was thinking of a padding you could use. Obviously real carpet padding is not an option because of water retention, mold, mildew, etc. So, I was thinking a thin Styrofoam insulation instead. Spread contact cement across the flooring and carefully put the insulation down (once it touches the cement, it will never come off or move), then laying your carpet down on top of that for a little added creature comfort for long times standing up. I'm by no means an expert, but, comfort is never a bad thing. As far as the delamination of the plywood, that is a manufacturer defect. Watching the video I couldn't find anything that you three did that could have caused that problem. Keep up the great work, looking forward to the rest of the series.

You’ve got options with the transom…. First of all cut off the top all the way across the transom. Take off any hardware. Dig that old wood out. Now here’s where your options start. You can use plywood covered with resin. You could go the coosa board route. Just like plywood but made from thermoplastic resin. Or there’s a mixable pourable resin/glass mix. The last is pricy but probably your best option. You know how to mix stuff… you’ve done epoxy resin and glass work and you’ve done foam. The pourable stuff is just mixing a hardener to resin glass mix and pour it in. Now stabilize your transom skin with plywood on the outside, both in and outside the boat. Block off areas for your drains…. And pour. Let harden, drill all your hardware and reassemble. You will have to do glass work on top of the transom but not as much as doing the whole skin on the back of the transom as mentioned by another comment.
