One of my best childhood friends. We met again in Santa Barbara after 30 years & were still the best of friends. One of the most incredible people I've ever known!

When Greg was about your age he lived here in Santee, CA and was starting out on his flying life (as was I). This place, which I now own and live at - a great, long far-flung circle of circumstance - was a leftover of the 60's/70's communal style of life. It is within what was then an undeveloped part of San Diego and was populated by many strange and odd structures like tree houses, glass houses, small one-room structures which Mort, the industrious immigrant from Canada had developed by growing lots of trees, scrounging scrap lumber and fittings, etc. He was a poster of lists of "chores" which we all were assigned each week - a place where many friendships were made as a constant flow of young people came and went. Mostly students, but many odds and ends like myself as well. I still know and keep up with the lives of a few of them, even after all these years. I was sitting on the computer in "The Trailer" (every habitation had a name) when someone I didn't recognize came wandering through. It hasn't been a commune-type property for many years, but since this place touched so many lives, every now and then someone who lived here back "in the day" will come through to see what their old home looks like these days. This particular rainy day it was Greg. I had met him back in the early 80's but didn't recognize him right away but we had a great time of reminiscing and talking of aviation since I too am a pilot. He had just landed his 747 at LAX and had come down to San Diego to go flying his glider at Torrey Pines and had just stopped by. He kept his rolled-up parasail behind his captain's seat and would use it wherever his job took him - which was all over the world. He had some great 747 flying stories which he would probably only tell to other pilots who could appreciate them. I received pictures and emails from China, Kenya . . . from places with those unpronounceable names in the center of Asia. . . the "stans". His job took him to every corner of the Earth, as you know. We knew certain people in common in the flying world and had a great time together talking, including his stories of when he lived here (he lived here slightly before I did, but used to visit). We had even shared the experiences of commercial fishing in Alaska, where I'd grown up. We stayed in occasional touch following his visit but I never saw him again in person. Of all the people I met during this youthful era of our lives here at the Fruit and Nut Farm (unofficial name) it was Greg's life I would have traded mine for if such things were possible. That he had learned German and had passed the German aviation written exams was mind boggling. He taught for a while in Santa Barbara and was from there, if I'm not mistaken, his mastery of German after meeting a German student while living or working in SB was an amazing aspect. Taking and passing those exams in German, of all languages, impressed the helll out of me. The British/EU written exams are a huge hurdle even in ones native language . . . but German? And the finding a flying niche in Europe, to live in Luxumburg, to travel the world in your own 747 and to fly it like it was a personal jet going in and out of places even normal planes won't often go, comfortably . . . it was all the stuff of dreams. He had more than his share of good luck - an essential gift we are either born with or we're not - but he eventually pushed his a tiny bit too far and he died way too young but boy . . . what a wonderful life he had while he had it. I wish he would have stopped by again, but he never did. Torrey Pines is a pretty boring venue for gliding so he probably never bothered with it anymore. I was immensely saddened to find out, three years after it happened, that he had died from a quirky gust on a challenging approach with a glider known to be unforgiving. But we all die. His death was quick and relatively painless from all accounts. He was aware and understood what had happened and I'm pretty sure, with a life like he had had, he left with s smile. May all of us have just a portion of the joy Greg lived his incredible life with. I'm sure you've inherited his spirit and intelligence and certainly wish everything good in life for you.
