Free will is the freedom to choose. The action following your choice still has consequences. Not having free will means your choices are always pre-determined, so even if it seems like you made the choice, it was already destined to be made and your consequence was also pre-determined. We don’t actually know if we have free will, we only have theories.
@johnathanwill19453 жыл бұрын
Actually we do know that everything is predetermined for our lives. The universe is quantifiable in the study of physics,which is a theory. Theory is the highest level of a body of knowledge,fact, laws etc. For example germs are still a theory, gravity is still a theory, evolution is still a theory. Theory in layman's terms is different from scientific theory. Matter cannot be created or destroyed. Also, the free will they are refereeing to in the show is absolute free will which is exactly the same as chaos. The free will you are describing is liberty guided by pre-selected options.
@daviemeister33553 жыл бұрын
Exactly, Asia! I was just making a monologue to myself about that. Consequences happen because one individual is not the only person that HAS free will. Think about it. If I decide to kill someone out of “free will”, then that person’s familiy also has the “free will” to attempt to kill me in revenge. In other words, if I decide to use my “free will” to hurt people, others can also use their free will to create a law to protect themselves FROM me. Therefore, the concept of “karma” can only be manually made. If karma truly existed and actually the universe hated bad guys, then there should have not been a single crime committed as bad guys would be aware that the literal universe is against them, and it would put everyone in check, because they KNOW that if they do anything bad, then they would always be destined to lose and therefore, their crimes would not be worth it. However, this is not the case, so natural Karma cannot exist. The law is what I call “intentional” or “manual” or “man-made” karma, which is justice served by actual people to keep ourselves in check. Back to the point, as you’ve stated, we have the ability to choose, but it doesn’t mean that everything works out as planned, as every other living sentient creature also has the ability to choose. Therefore, their very existence stops things from going in one individual’s direction. If you choose to go outside in the winter with no clothes, you made your choice but it doesn’t mean you are free of consequences such as hypothermia, frostbite, etc. So I agree with you. A lot of people do indeed tend to confuse freedom of choice with freedom from consequence.
@tehcookievanilla13233 жыл бұрын
@@johnathanwill1945 Just because they are the highest doesn't mean both theories and laws could potentially be falsified by countervailing evidence, we don't understand everything in the universe down to the quantum level therefore there always could be potential countervailing evidence for that everything is being predetermined. But I do agree that everything might be predetermined, for some reason I just didn't like your reasoning.
@johnathanwill19453 жыл бұрын
@@tehcookievanilla1323 scientific theory is the highest level of understanding you can reach when describing a phenomenon. It's the finish line. We dont need to know everything about the universe for my argument to hold firm. If we did get to absolute knowledge it would still be something there affecting the universe in such a way that it would still lead to everything being determined from that phenomenons point of view. Have you ever seen dominoes lined up and get knocked down by 1 event. That's how the universe works. From the start of that line to the end you can predict that all of them will fall as long as the constants remain intact. That's how our lives work. That's how they came up with big bang theory. From the start of our life we automatically have an inevitable physical death date already determined for us. The only gap in knowledge is that we dont know what will lead up to it in most cases. We only select from a preselected list of possible outcomes and physical triggers govern those. For example, you do not choose when you are hungry or thirsty physical events govern that you can only choose to try to acquire sustenance to alleviate those triggers. Free will is a concept born of a knowledge enriched mind. We have ego problems as humans so we can't accept not being in total control. It's painfully obvious that the universe runs on autopilot.
@noconaroubideaux94233 жыл бұрын
@@johnathanwill1945 The whole point of a scientific theory is that we aren't at the finish line yet. For example, string theory and quantum loop theory are both theories that reconcile quantum mechanics with relativity, among the many other attempts at describing the same. Being an organic life form that will eventually decay into energy content doesn't mean you don't have free will. First, energy cannot be created or destroyed. The actual energy content of your body existed long before you ever did and will exist long after your consciousness has faded. Thats just a condition for life. What isn't a condition for life is the entire history of human civilization. We don't need youtube as a condition for our survival but we have it and many of us use it regularly. Same goes for roads, jobs, taxes, etc. Free will is the same in that it is not a condition for survival and people generally give away free will temporarily when their survival is threatened if they believe it is a legitimate tool of survival. Even then, we choose to give up free will because we could always just not give up our free will if we're willing to accept whatever consequence come from reclaiming free will in a powerless position. Neither of which matter when the energy content of your body will remain the same regardless of the choice so it is a choice we are at free will to determine because the only real difference is the meaning that we apply to response to a given situation. Also, the world is not quantifiable in physics. We don't have maths complex enough to quantify the universe. Theres a billion things that happen in the universe that science knows about but only understand that it works the way it does because the universe wants it to work that way.

Y’all are mad because Sylvie screwed up the multiverse and “a lot of people are going to die” are forgetting that people and timelines are literally being killed off every moment they don’t align with Kang’s storyline.
@Unleashthebeastable3 жыл бұрын
Well yeah, that's the whole point. Immortus (Kang) was the best and most simple way to show a human mind what God would most likely go through and do for the end goal and balance. He was neither bad nor good, he's just IS, doing what he does because otherwise - there will be NOTHING. And he actually stated, ''I've been through ALL scenarios and this is best one that can be'' - meaning, that he understands that it might be awful for some, and if there was a better way than this one - he would it immediately take it, but there is not ... that was the whole idea of him explaining it to them. At that point, human emotions, understanding, and personal vengeance cannot be compared to the same level as to what was Immortus doing, nor it will be justified. Plus, she didn't change anything - she just made it 1000 times worse and even more people will die because of that. And if you watch Sylvie's reaction closely, after killing Kang, even she realised that she fucked up.

@@Unleashthebeastable I get what you're saying but Kang shouldn't be the one to control that. He shouldn't be the one to determine which person/timeline/universe gets pruned and erased from existence. Same can be said about Thanos. He has a point. There are way too many people feeding off of limited resources. But the issue is that Thanos shouldn't be the one to decide that for EVERYONE. In Kang's story, he did say that his variants were the ones that were fighting and conquering these timelines. So..... The answer is to stop Kang (don't know how but I guess we will find out in phase 4) That is probably the one scenario that Kang didn't come up with.... For him to not exist and cause these wars from happening. About Sylvie, sure. But we don't know exactly what she's feeling. Yes, she was crying but that could be from her realizing that she betrayed Loki (the one person that believed in her). And she definitely changed things. There is free will now and people and timelines can exist without following a predetermined path. I don't agree that "even more people will die" because like I mentioned in my previous comment.... literal timelines and universes are being erased hahah like all the time. And yes, it's going to get bad before it gets good. But the bottom line is.... one person should not dictate all. Example, if you're a professional basketball player... and then someday you decide "nah, I want to play tennis instead" ... YOU and your timeline should not be pruned and wiped from existence.

''So it's better to die with free will'', ''There is free will now and people and timelines can exist without following a predetermined path.'' - guys, did you saw what happened at the end of the episode. What free will was there in the end? Kang the Conquerer took immediately over (plus all of the other bad Kangs are loose as well). You think there is free will now when Kang has become a true dictator at the TVA (we even got a hint from the small dialogue of Mobius and B-15 that they have already taken some kind of orders from him)? Beforehand you had a guy that at least tried to make as much of a balanced scenario as possible (and people in the Universe in general did actually had free will, excluding those that had to be erased at one point), while now you have a true Dictator that openly and forcefully implement his way as a law - that was the whole point of Immortus in the first place. Regarding the whole ''free will'' topic ... it is a deep and complicated subject, but generally and philosophically speaking - there is no such thing as a ''true'' free will (that's what they actually tried to implement in the show as well) ... but that's for some other time. As for the Thanos comparison - I get what you're saying, but Thanos was focused only on one and only one Universe (his), and in his plan it was about bringing back balance, not eradicating all life ... while Immortus explained that we are talking about the eradication of everything, everywhere, in every Universe ... I think that Kang's points gave him a better reason to become somewhat of an authority. P.S. I like the idea that the way out is to eradicate all of the Kangs in general since they are the source of the problem, no idea how that is possible since there is an infinite number of him, but that's a good idea nonetheless. The dialogue currently is focused on the things that happened as of now.

We are persuaded to adhere to the rules and boundaries within society because of the negative reinforcements and punishments acting deterrents preventing total chaos as a result of free will. What the show and the episode was referring to is is pretty determination. Bringing up the conversation that if Kang or someone else is in control who knows how everything ends including all of our decisions then is their really such thing as choice if was already pre destined.

I think in the overall scheme of things Immortus wants Wanda’s kids. They were never supposed to happen. I believe those few seconds he didn’t know what was going to happen is right when Wanda was looking for her kids back in the WandaVision post credit scene. Kids of Nexus beings are his kryptonite and to time itself in the comics. In Loki, he wanted them branch timelines for Wanda to lead him to them. I would not be surprised if Kang/Immortus was manipulating Wanda from the beginning something like the comics. They’re telling her story through all these projects. Wiccan and Speed are the motivations for Phase 4.

One thing I've noticed people seem to not be considering with Sylvie is that this is very much a Loki c. the first Thor film. Loki's had some growth that she just hasn't yet, and just as he had to learn the hard way that destroying Jotunheim and killing Laufey didn't really do him any good, she's having to learn that with killing He Who Remains. She and Loki definitely care for each other, deeply, and I think the way she kissed him and sent him away was telling him "I have to do this, I'm sorry, but I can't give up on this". This has been her life's goal, since they took her almost, and as much as she does care for Loki they haven't known each other more than a few days. But, this isn't the end of their story- I think she and Loki will be reconciled next season, and good on her for doing what she needed to do! Loki's done a lot of wrong too, and he's always forgiven. She can come back from this :)

1. They are putting too much trust into this universe's Kang. He said there would be infinite amounts of him which I believe. But he also framed his words in a way to have them believe that ALL of other versions of him are worse than him. If there are infinite Kang's, doesn't that mean there are also infinite possibilities? 2. She destroyed "this" Kang's "rules". But restored the natural disorder to the universe. He essentially decided what choices everyone was allowed to make and even though another Kang is just gonna take his spot, I understand why Sylvie did it. Pat and the others were talking about "rules" but none of them seemed to answer Evans question about "what rule did kid Sylvie break to have her life taken away, so young". They are comparing freedom of consequence to free will which is two different things. From what we saw, you could easily become a variant based on the rules Kang had in place. You could do a good thing in life and still become a variant because "you weren't supposed to do tuat good thing". So yes there are "rules" but those rules will not likely be viewed as just by someone on the receiving end of it. Also why would I trust someone who took my life away for merely existing? Why would I just quietly go home after coming face-to-face with the person who's been pulling everyone's, but most importantly, MY strings? Something worse may be waiting, but I would have no peace of mind knowing that everything I do is controlled by a dude in a mystikal mansion beyond the end of time.

Sylvie may have had a meaningless victory, in which she killed He Who Remains, releasing his Variant self, Kang the Conqueror and all of his/their other Variants 😰😱, as well as both literally and figuratively pushing Loki away, hurting him (emotionally) in the process 🥺😣😔, but, at least she restored free will by allowing the Multiverse to be regrown, while there _will_ be a lot more villains, there will _also_ be a lot more heroes to rise up to stand against them 😤(proud)😉. In the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, they showed the Spider-Verse, in which while there was one out of all of Spider-People in the Multiverse that that was completely evil 😈 called Wolf Spider, and using a magical artifact, tried to absorb the power of any and all Spider-People, but, when he finally caught _all_ of them, it destroyed him because all of the good inside of everyone else, was like poison to Wolf Spider and it destroyed him 😉 👍. Point is, a central theme in pretty much any hero story, when (to semi-quote ( _gags_ because he's a despicable character, and also creepy (not just in looks, but in his origins 😰😓)) Snoke from _Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi_ , when "darkness rises, light is there to meet it". (I know, it sounds corny 😅😓, but, I really enjoy the concept, because it pertains to both fiction _and_ in real life 😌.)

You have the free will to choose whatever you want to do right now, but you don't have the freedom to do anything without consequence. So with Wells example, you actually do have the free will to decided whether or not you want to rob a bank, but if you don't have the freedom to do it without going to jail etc. Now if you argue we don't have free will, then you're talking about everything being pre destined and future already being decided. Basically Evan was right.
