Although I'm a huge fan of poe and BG3 I have to comment on this that in this case there is some truth to the fact that poe 2 will set some unrealistic expectations. As ggg themselves have said this is not a game built completely from scratch. It was initially supposed to be a big expansion patch for poe 1 that just had enough feature creep to be turned into a separate game. But the fact that it did in fact start with the basis of poe means that they can reuse lots of content from poe 1 that is known to work and appeal to the players. All the end game mechanics are based on poe 1 leagues. Any new game will not have that. Last epoch is a good example. It's a very good game. It appealed to several tens or hundreds of thousands of players, but there was not enough content to make them return. I hope that new arpgs show up with enough appeal to have presence in the genre and that can keep ggg and poe from stagnating by providing active competition

I love the one death limit change on maps. To say "if you want punishment, do hardcore" is equating losing a map to losing an entire character. That's a massive difference.

Removing Scouring Orbs is one of the best decisions they have made. It's going to make bases have more value & there will be an end to items before corruption. If they can get people exalt slamming in Act 1 that will have a massive impact on how likely they are to continuing to craft items. By the time they get to end game & find omens they will be much more comfortable. The new Chaos is great too. I really hope they keep the 1 portal per map. It really puts a clamp on degeneracy. You choose the way stone level. If you are dying a bunch you are very likely pushing higher than you ought to be. I've done it plenty but in POE you can Juice your maps higher than you ought to & just lean on portals. I find this kind of icky - and it is something I have done. Dying 5-6 times in a map? Should you really be able to do that & say you have 'completed' it? I disagree with the 'if you want hardcore play hardcore argument' as it is a bit dishonest. Holding people accountable does not have to mean - start an entirely new character. I don't believe new people are going to be the ones crying about this - it will be POE 1 players trying to do what the favorite content creator is doing without understanding what it took to get there.

I've always played medium core. Making death as meaningless a hurdle as it is in PoE 1 just cuts so much out of character building. If death doesn't matter, defence just doesn't matter in the same way. I'll never play hardcore in an online only game (probably), because I don't trust my choices of ISP to provide a flawless experience. Doesn't mean I don't want my deaths to be an interesting outcome to work around during play.

I hated having six chances to complete a maps, often I would roll a difficult map and faceroll in it and die 6 times so lose 60% experience. Or just get onetapped randomly, then needing to walk 2 minutes back to the combat.

I remember avoiding crafting until I couldn't find a bow for a good price and ended up sinking all currency into the bow craft following a guide. So I couldn't finish the bow but what I got from it was the knowledge about different crafting methods that made me craft most of my own items every league after. Truly an amazing system!

I love the 1 try for a map option, and I don't completely agree with the "if you want to be punished, then play hardcore", because in hardcore the punishment is absolute. Here it isn't, you still have a way to redeem yourself. It gives a game more challenging vibe.

Also by a time you get to the Atlas, you're already low tens of hours of gameplay deep. You should know your character by then, you shouldn't be surprised much by new boss or mechanic, and it also teaches people to think about the tradeoff between high blasting and defense. D4 is an easy high blaster game and it gets quite boring after some time because there is not much of a challenge then.

Well in poe1 it’s not a big deal. You can just level up a new character and have him ready for maps in like 5 or 6 hours. Poe2 campaign is supposedly 25+ hours. If you don’t like your ascendancy and decide to switch it’s a very big deal.

I am enjoying the fact that there is a 1 death incentive for maps. It is a bit more 'hardcore' than LE's system, where all you do is lose the loot drop at the end. It will either a) incentivize people to learn the game or b) weed out the ones that the game just isn't for. I want GGG to succeed, but I also don't want the game watered down so much that it becomes simplistic; the difficulty and rewarding gameplay loop is the reason I play to begin with. You don't get that in some other ARPGs now. I am concerned with how simplified the crafting looks, but we will see. I like videos like this and although I am going to continue to support POE creators, watch their videos from time to time, etc, I am going to go into POE2 blind. The meta gaming that so many channels are doing are going to make POE2 feel like just another POE1 league and not a new game.

I like ascendancies being locked once you've chosen one. Might be the more hardcore part of me where I want choices to matter and i can't explain the appeal better than that. I know why people want to be able to switch or being able to strategically switch later on as in it was a plan to get a better start. But i just don't intuitively don't vibe with that.

I mean I think the ascendency change lock is to make more ppl test the other classes and overall making new characters during the Early Access. Assuming the minute they will unlock the full ascendencies they will give us a full respec, if not earlier, so we can switch to the new ones.

No. 11 - "meaningful combat." Not just bosses, but also rare monsters (as mentioned). Which then GGG put work into refining magic find and itemisation (/the loot drop system). And GGG took the gamble, to removing 6-portal defence meta of Glass Cannons.

@@Powernudel That is not entirely accurate. I remember 10 years ago when I started playing, having no knowledge, it took me 3 days or so to get through the campaign. But now, especially if you have twink gear ready to go, you can go through the campaign in a few hours easily. That probably will not change. I predict that by the end of the beta, people will do the campaign in less than 8 hours easily.

Millions of people played elden ring, not because it's but because it's hard. Have some faith in the player base to deal and live with one life in a given atlas node. I like this idea and hope it will never change. Players in poe1 are so used to brainless rush through the content and never have to fear of losing to much, except materials to fight the pinnacles. So yeah I fricking love it. Finally a bit more difficulty and brain is needed while actually playing the game.

Small correction: In PoE1, certain atlas bases like Vermillion Ring requires level 80. Some of the pinnacle/uber uniques do as well. The new top armor bases also require 84.

I would be totally on board for reduced portals tbh. Maybe 2-3 portals for maps. 2-3 portals for bosses but when you die, you have to do the whole fight again. I think that would maintain a relative level of punishment, hopefully minimize glass cannon meta. I like the medium-core concept. But it probably will be too punishing I think for long term

Craft5ing is the thing that got me hooked for PoE on first League (Perandus). it changed alot since then, and its still my favorite item system. sure I´m curious how it will all work out in terms of endgame gear for PoE2 (for example are influences or eldritch implicits still a thing or some similar options?), but i have faith in Jonathan and Co. :) it will be a bigger beta as d4 is a game now xD (dont get me wrong, i enjoyed d4 a few seasons, poe is just another dimension of arpg game ^^ ) Also: HAAAAAIIIIIP :D

Insane how people are upset about their choices mattering and being permanent. That should be something that makes the game better, because it gives it more gravitas. Last epoch "Soft" removes the maps/bosses if you fail and it doesn't feel horrible. It definitely makes you play cleaner. I know there is investment in POE maps that doesn't exist in LE so that's a thing. Personally I think it might mean we don't get as many *unfair* deaths that POE1 definitely has. Trade League is basically don't care about deaths much (if at all). That's also wrong. You do get 6 portals to bring loot out so multi portals does exist in a softer sense.

Might be the odd one out but I love consequences. It makes succeeding that much better. No problem with no ascendancy change. I think respec for points in the one you chose is fine but not be able to change. There has to be a penalty for dying as well and i believe they took away exp loss anyway so 1 portal seems fine.

I really dislike the one-try system on bosses. If you are learning the mechanics of a boss it is not helping if you get to see that boss 1 week after your first try again, that won't change anything for fight #2 with said boss. This is a pure powergaming change for ppl who get to play enough in one go to be able to learn to proceed. Never seen a more anti-casual player design choice before.

Could it be tedious, absolutely. I see it as debatable. If you casualize/simplify every single tedium and/or friction, you're left with what would be the antithesis of what PoE is supposed to be. Take an MMO for example; most people nowadays think traveling time is bad friction, when in fact it's an absolute core part of making a world feel vast and alive.

This is how I think the game is gonna go for new players. They play through the campaign and have a good time. Then they get to maps die a fair bit cause they are new and the build they made is not the best. Then start doing maps and die every few maps (4/10 or something like that) finally they find a boss do some damage to it and die at 3/4 hp or something then realize they have to grind all the way back to another boss then just to die again. After that I just see them quitting the game honestly its far too punishing IMO like I think it should be a league thing or something you have to opt into. Pretty much just like hard-core or SSF keep it there and have it be more rewarding but keep soft-core well just that soft-core, no hardcore-lite stuff. If they are going to keep it I think bosses should have 2-3 tries at least. Keep maps 1 portal sure but people have to learn the boss fights and how are you going to learn if your done after one death? Like at this point just play hard-core.. cause if your build has to be a build that is pretty much deathless might as well do it in hard-core.

@11:41 apparently, even if you failed a map, you can still use the portals to loot stuff, and probably even finish the map itself if you want, you will just not be granted progression from that "tile" in the atlas. But i'm going off what i heard in the multitude of videos i watched, we just gonna be sure how it works on the 6th. I love this change, honestly. I like the idea of we having to take our defenses and our playstyle way more seriously as an important part of our progression and being punished to "slack" on this, this was a factor that always tipped too much the scales in PoE1 in favor of very blasting builds that could do everything quickly from the get go while foregoing decent defenses until reaching content that absolutely demanded it. I don't think it's "too hard" on newer players too, i think this honestly helps them because it put checks on every step of the way, instead of letting them build something unreliable and have a lot more trouble respecing it all when they've spent a multitude of points.

thats incorrect, you can tp out to go empty your invetory, refill flasks, make a trade, 6 time if you want. But if you die once, the map is failed, and cant go back in it .

New people will eventually become usual players, and maybe even veteran. They will get used to some "new players unfriendly mechanics" such as difficulty. Elden ring proved it. One has to be punished for mistakes, otherwise one may never find gratification of success.

the crafting of POE 1 is not difficult, the problem is the accessibility, it is not accessible to causal players. how difficult it can be ? a lot of players here have PhD🤣. but the fact it is so expensive to craft the end game items making it not accessible to players who can not have enough time to make currency.

Poe1 crafting...is like phd level. Really. You need huge study to understand or you will get punished of not knowing well-bricked item. I love the change made in poe2. Deterministic, still has jack pot chance from the ground item.

New people that are learning the game aren’t going to get into maps for a while. By the time they do they should have some semblance of a build going on and beginner maps shouldn’t be that hard. IMO

After a week of hype and excitement, I think there's one thing wrong with poe 2: The deathless maps. How are we gonna do to kill unknown bosses (that will be rarer ~1 in 4 maps apparently) if we only have one try to do it? How are we supposed to learn bosses patterns if we die early in the fight and don't face this boss again for like 20 maps? And what about pinnacle bosses? I wish they didn't take one of the only few negative aspects of last epoch to put in poe 2. Maybe it would have been better to copy their ingame loot filter instead 😅

They arent unknown, the map bosses will be the campaign bosses they arent unknown. At most they will have slightly adjusted mechanics. And pinnacles are meant to be restrictive

as for pinnacle boss you can still use 6 portal however the boss resets its hp so thats it

All of these are small changes. None of this is revolutionary, and it won't have any effect on the genre as a whole. The biggest change, and the thing that actually matters, is combat. They actually thought about it, it's intentional. It's the first ARPG to actually have any real action in it, and that's what is revolutionary.

Mediumcore is awesome. There's a lot of people who don't want the "extreme commitment" of hardcore, but still want punishment for failure. I'm really looking forward to 1 attempt per boss/map

I hope GGG don't back down on being unable to respec ascendancies and failing a map on death. These were included because GGG think they were needed. It seems to me the only people who respecced their ascendancies in PoE1 did so because they didn't want to run the campaign. GGG spent a lot of time and money on the campaign, the last they want is people respeccing to avoid running the campaign.

Mainly because of mtx from POE1. It also allows more looting of a map.

You are wrong. A Map is failed if all your Portals are gone. Every Waystone opens 6 Portals.

In the announcement stream, they literally said you die one time in a map, you lose the map. It is noted all over the place in videos and FAQ's. The 6 portals are for leaving the maps for trading or dropping off loot, or for other players if you are in a group.
