You get a save screen after laying her to rest in the original release, iirc. But the actual end of disk one is at the end of the Whirlwind Maze with Cloud's breakdown (after Icicle Inn and the Great Glacier). Disk 2 picks up at the execution in Junon.

@@gogauze Disc 1 ends with Aerith's death and disc 2 begins right after it. I would still argue that Aerith's death being put as the end of disc 1 is highly effective because it marks a huge turning point in the game and it's to put even more uneasiness in the player because...what else could go wrong now? Which does end up happening, everything goes to hell after Aerith dies and it's like she took any idea of possible hope with her.

i remember playing this in 97-98. hit that point, ugly cried for half an hour, saved my game and shut it off. i couldnt bring myself to play it again until my anger at sephiroth outweighed my grief. took several days. was the first emotional moment i ever had in a video game. i was maybe 13 years old at the time. we didnt really have the internet at the time to spoil everything for us. everyone hit that journey on their own. my buddy who played the game before me didnt give me any spoilers. hit like a truck.

It was such a moving scene that even after years of seeing it be turned into a meme and casually spoiled, it still hit like an absolute truck. Descending down those magical stairs to that place where Aerith meets her fate felt like a puzzle piece falling into place.

Yeah, it was tough on everyone who played the game. But those of us who preferred Aerith...I daresay we had more of a heartbreak than the Tifa fans out there. Nothing against Tifa, of course, but I just *really* liked Aerith. And then she was gone. Can't say I'd ever played a game that kills off a playable character mid-game before I played FF7, so it never even crossed my mind that was a possibility 'til it happened.

There were no reaction videos and game spoilers being posted online. You played the game and had no idea what to expect when you reached that point. Ever notice in the original opening scene Aerith's eyes are open to begin with when we fade in to her face, and then after the Lifestream helps Holy to defeat Meteor, her eyes are closed then open before the credit roll. In the Remake the opening scene begins with her eyes closed and then they open, just like the ending of FF7 OG.

I played this game with 2 friends when we were teenagers. After Aerith's death and the following battle, we all just sat there in silence for a really long time. Finally, one friend said "That sucks." and turned off the console. Then without a single other word, we all just got up and went home. I remember sitting alone on my back porch for several hours when I got home, staring blankly at nothing and trying not to think. I grieved for her for weeks. I have had beloved family pets whose passing affected me less.

Wow, I played this in 2000 i was 10. I remember being so angry the first time, not angry as in angry, but sad angry kinda thing. Maybe i was too young to really understand the severity of it all or i didnt want to accept it, i don't really know. second playthrough i cried. playthroughs afterwards made me sad but didn't cry because well i knew what was happening. Watching your reaction got me crying for that scene again. Really appreciate your genuine reactions to some of my favorite childhood games. I had to pause briefly at the ending of this Disc because I couldn't process what just happened. Lost my favorite character and teammate. 😭 Now whenever I play through I use the chance in Wutai to gain Limit Breaks up to Level 3 because of her Fury Brand and Hyper (you get through an item). Still I miss having her in the team! She was such a bright spot in the groups life. . .Cloud especially.

How did you manage to not get this spoiled for you. This is seriously one of the most famous, most memorable and possibly the single most important moment ever on video gaming storytelling history. To me what completely demolishes me are Cloud words after she dies "Aerith will no longer cry, laugh or get angry" the weight of the finality and inevitability of death is so beautifully captured in that simple line shouted by an angry and grieving Cloud. And then the cherry on top is having to fight Jenova with Aerith's theme paying its the most joyless battle on the history of videogames.

Yoshinori was an amazing story writer and Sakaguchi a brilliant game designer and director of this Legendary game. I remember this sad part and felt a sudden void hit me for a moment. I stopped playing for a while after Aerith died and played Suikoden 1 and 2 to make me forget the pain lol. For me this will always be the "Final Fantasy 7." The Remake is very well put but for me the original will always be a best journey I've played and thoroughly enjoyed.

Just thinking about the black materia scene and what the remake could be like here; Cloud giving Sephiroth the Black Materia in the Remake is probably gonna be similar to the original with Aerith instead trying to convince the gang to stop him. They're probably gonna get attacked by Cloud in the process, or whisperers are gonna stop them or something. Or both. Or we're gonna control a Child Cloud while watching the others get beat down by Adult Cloud as he walks towards Sephiroth. Or maybe we stop it/him/Cloud, but Sephiroth still gets hands on the materia. Man.. I should play the original again..

Anyone ever come across the theory that Sephiroth missed all Aerith's vital organs (based on where he stabbed her) so she's just unconscious when Cloud puts her in the water. Meaning that it's Cloud who murdered Aerith, by drowning.

This is how people should feel. The genius part is that if you try to do anything but moving forward in the scene (cancel button or moving) Cloud cannot do anything but shake and wriggle. This scene might be well known, but it would a great loss if remake does not go down this route and sadly Aeriths death meaning in remake (if it happens) is already cheapen and lessened. People will cry because of the fidelity, all while death is just a theme the developers now toy with for subversion.
