I went ahead and made this with a heat-laminating pouch. I put two patterned cardstock sheets with their insides/wrong sides facing one another inside my laminating pouch, matching them up perfectly. After running them through the laminator I could cut around the edges, removing the extra laminate and my two sheets of cardstock separated. (Alternately, you could slide a piece of printed paper between the 2 sheets) This left the inside as paper so I could glue it together. I didn't need the gussets, but You can laminate those on the outside as well, even fitting it into the same laminating pouch, with their insides together. I find that good double-sided tape will adhere paper to laminate, so if you can avoid lam -to- lam then you are golden. Double-sided tape on BOTH sides will adhere lam to lam.

I do have another craft where I did one-sided lamination. It's okay at times, but I've also had the lamination peel off the card stock on other projects, especially if folding is involved. So I'm kind of having a like-dislike relationship with single sided lamination at the moment :)

I think I prefer the matte surface because it's less of a distraction from the design on the paper, but this gives me another idea for structure rather than laminating or Mod Podge. How about cutting the envelope out of fairly stiff plastic sheet and covering it with your paper or fabric. You could score it the same way you do the other and it would be nice and strong yet bend in the right places. Those would even make nice satchels if you added straps/handles, and you could also make accordian file folders this way to contain 8 1/2" X 11" paper documents.

Great project. TFS. Another crafter did use heat laminating by putting two sheets (cut to the correct size with the corners rounded) wrong sides together...connecting them with washi tape so they don’t move. She then laminated and cut around the edges like you did and gentle pulled them apart. Then she finished the project (you would then adhere your sides and snap). This is a great option for those of us who already have a heat laminator and pouches and don’t want to spend the money on the adhesive laminating sheets.

I'm sure someone else has already done this. I only had regular laminate sheets. So I cut two folders, put them together back to back and laminated. When cut you get 2 pouches. Love this project

yes, that's definitely an option. I've heard so many crafters say you "have to" leave a border of laminate around the project to seal it, but it depends on the material used. Not always necessary

Thanks for that very cute idea....but you can laminate one side only and still put in the sides for a wider space. Just put blank paper in between.

That's the beauty of self-adhesive laminating sheets! And you can cut the lamination at the exact edge of the project instead of leaving a border of clear lamination around the whole project.

Love the pouches, I will be making some of these soon. I have that snap system, but haven't used it for a while. Gonna dust it off and use it. Also, I think I will use double sided tape for the side hinges and the added trim. Just a tip about laminating the card stock. I have laminated two sheets at once to make two separate sheets. Place them in the laminating pouch back to back and cut the excess plastic along the edges the way you did with the single sheet. The two sheets will separate.

does the lamination still stick after the edges are cut off?

The lamination only sticks to the side of the paper that is touched by the lamination pouch plastic. Inside between the two sheets are not touched by the pouch material so, when you cut close to the edge the two sheets will come apart and give you two sheets with lamination only on the outside part of the paper.

Once the heat from the thermal laminating machine comes in contact with the paper and pouch together, the heat set glue on the inside of the pouch bonds the paper to the plastic. You can't peel that plastic off that paper. I know this because last year I made prayer journals and I used this process with one of the components that went along with each journal. I also made page magnets. Folded card stock in half 3 inches on each side, placed the folded strips that were 8 wide inside a pouch, I got 3 folded strips per pouch and ran it through. Next I cut the 8" strips into several 1/2" sections. Once you cut the sections, sides and plastic off the bottoms the laminated card stock opened like a freshly steamed clam. You can make the page magnets any size you want, that's the size I chose. I am not taking full credit for this, I watched a video here where a woman made pockets for her journals using this method, but larger. I don't remember who she was but, I will look through my history and try to find it. I hope I explained this well.

I didn’t know they made single sided laminating sheets. I have a heat laminator and a Zyron cold laminator and they both do both sides. As I’m sure you know glueing laminate to laminate doesn’t work so well, at least for me. I’ve had projects that just needed one side laminated and have tried work arounds that sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. I will definitely be getting some of this. Thanks for the information. The pockets are cute. I was voting for the lace you ended up using.

I have used these self adhesive sheets for years. I used to use clear Contac paper, but that's so cheap. This has a nice finish on it. I use them for "laminating" cards that I print out to put in my wallet, too.

I’ve had a hot laminator for years and when I only want one side laminated, which is quite often, actually, I put two sheets of paper together, good sides out, laminate them in a laminating sleeve as one page and afterwards trim along the edges and each paper has on,y one laminated side. I do this often with things I want to then adhere to a magnetic sheet to put on my fridge for a reference guide... those business card magnetic sheets are great for sticking notes you refer to often to the fridge or metal cabinet. Easy to adhere the paper side and then the other side is laminated.

Heidi Yamazaki I’ve done that too, but sometimes it’s not practical for some of the things I was trying to do and a waste of paper and laminate. This stuff would be nice for a quick one sided lamination of a project I would think. Thanks for the suggestion though.

The plastic snap applicator is what you need. The center of the plastic snap is critical, and the Crop-a-dile breaks it.

I love this idea! I have a heat laminator and my mind is racing. I've laminated file folders and pockets before, sliced them open with a blade, and the inside is not laminated. I wonder if that would work. I also wonder if it is possible to use just one side of a laminating folder for the heat laminator.

No, you must use both sides of the laminating sheet. I have laminated (and slit open) small envelopes, and I am going to do a video on this size, too.

If you have double sided paper, you just put the 2 sides out that you want on the outside into the laminating pouch, pass through the laminator, then you have to cut the excess right next to the paper. The 2 sheets should come apart easily, you'll have 2 blanks with one laminated side and one unfinished side to glue to. Teachers do it all the time for flash cards. I seen a tutorial somewhere here in KZbin.

Love this idea wish I had the supplies now to who try one LOL I'm going to have to look up those snaps and self laminate sheet. I just keep thinking how cute it would be to make one the size of a gift certificate or large enough for recipe cards so that I could write my family's favorite recipes and give them as gifts to people. You could use scrapbook paper in Holiday colors or certain theme colors can you tell I really want to try this this project?!😁 just wondering if self laminate is the same thing as clear contact paper?

I used clear Contact paper for years. I was happy to switch to self-adhesive laminating sheets. Contact paper is more dull, with a slightly rubbery feel. The laminating sheets are more transparent, with a smoother, crisper feel & finish. However, that doesn't mean you can't use the Contact paper.

Although the Crop-A-Dile is a snap setter, it's such a powerful tool and too hard to measure now much force you're using. I should practice, as I get asked often. I like that the KAM snap setter is not that powerful. The plastic snaps are ruined easy and then are super hard to remove from the project

Laminating won’t seal the sides shut if you put two sheets back to back with a sheet of printer paper in between! The fronts would get laminated and the backs would remain un laminated!

yup. Laminating is so fun to play with. I have seen though that doing that can sometimes cause the one-sided lamination to peel up

No, the self-sticking laminating sheets are more flexibe (rubbery?) than heat laminating sheets.

yes, it would. Once I tried these self adhesive laminating sheets, I quit using Contact paper due to the vast difference in quality.
