Jerry doesn’t get the respect for his guitar skills. Guitar lists used to least put him in the top ten in the 90’s. He’s already forgotten to way too many. His guitar playing is absolutely in the top 5. He’s incredible. He could roll those scales as good as anyone ever. His playing was dripping with style. Man is he missed

There are many more technical players. But no one better at playing from the heart-with amazing skill. That’s just something a list maker will never understand, comparing people that’ll get them clicks.

I thank myself for every Grateful Dead show I attended. Each time was magic. I stood twenty feet away from Jerry Garcia and saw him smiling at Brent in Pittsburgh in July 87. I was a teenager, didn't have a ticket and bought them at the box office the day of. We all came separately, but when the show started I saw a dozen friends from high school there, over two hundred miles from home; it was a magnificent adventure. Those were magic times and they shaped my life and made me the man I am today. God Bless the music and the souls of the dead.

The big Death Don’t return! Never saw it on video before. Good loud recording. God damn tell me Brent was the secret heart and soul of the band--pure raw emotion and devotion during his verse and solo-then it cuts to Jerry just wailing while biting his bottom lip. That’s how it is with the boys, one little detail like that made my night. Prayers and vibes for buddy Eric who is currently laying in his bed and dying. Needed some dark Dead tonight to fuel my mood

Primal dead in its raw glory on full display this night. All these years later. The band that could give you china cat sunflower, sugar magnolia, scarlet begonias, and songs of utmost joy and wonder could also weave their way through sonic landscapes and wind up pounding you in the chest with hard hitting, stone cold reality. Taking you past death and out the other side. What an experience.

Each kick down was like riding Disneys Space Mountain through the Hampton “Starship” Coliseum, dopamine overload over and over!! This was a period of Dead tour when you hated missing any show, there were more kick downs in 88’&89’ than any other span of tour; the electric Ripple, Black Throated, Loose Lucy, Bid U Goodnight, Johnny Be Good, Here Comes Sunshine, California Earthquake, weather Report, Dark Star,DDHNM, and so many more!!!

The strangest expression comes over his face when he's seriously pleased with his own playing,as in this case. I've seen it a few times in over 25 years of Dead and JGB concerts, but it's rare. You can see it when he's winding down on the closing solo of Morning Dew in the Alpine 07-19-89 video. Sort of an ancient wizard look, almost predatory too.................
