In the holocaust in Lublin the nazi officers rounded the hasidim up and told them to sing for them, and one Jew started singing this and no one joined. Than another Jew started singing the same tune but with the words "Mir veln zey iberlebn", which means we will outlive them, and that cought on like wildfire.

This is a famous segment of film about the wedding of the daughter of the Munkaczer Rebbe, Chaim Lazar Shpira. My father was in his Yeshiva when this took place in 1933. Look this up if you want to hear what a Jewish wedding band of the time sounded like. You can also hear Yiddish as it was spoken by the Jewish Hillbillies (ferd genuvim) of Zakarpatia. They sound just like my parents, aunt's, uncle's and cousins. The chasidim still sound a lot like this.

Yiddish is based on Medieval High German and it is indeed classified as a West Germanic language (as is Dutch and English as well). Yiddish contained some Aramaic, Hebrew and Slavic borrow words :)

@@Lagolop the reason I said Yiddish is not german is mainly because it is the language of the jews in diaspora at eastern europe. Yiddish means jewish. It is written with hebrew letters. As a minority group, opressed for centuries, surviving many violences, including but not only pogroms and Shoa (the "Holocaust"), by the hands of slavic and german people, its very clear that jews are not german, not slavic, my family was never recognized neither as europeans, or german, or slavic, so our language is NOT german or slavic. Yiddish is a jewish language.
