the helios 40-2 has similar characteristics and you learn very quickly that when using it wide open for portraiture, the subject must always be in the center of the frame. composition is then done by cropping in post. the more you shoot with it, the more you learn to work around the limitations and to squeeze the most out of its interesting character. i imagine the same is true with the petzval.

The helios as been on my radar for a little while, though I think I heard there are issues with focusing to infinity? The cropping suggestion is a good idea, though not sure how well 35mm holds up on my scanner.

What camera would you recommend getting for this lens?

That's really hard to say without knowing any other information, for example, budget, film/digital etc. Though to be honest, I don't think it really matters what camera, as long as it's one that you'll enjoy using.
