Remember that... When you could just park your car, get out and look at things? When you could just smile at someone without consequence? When you could walk down a street without being crushed? When you could get close to places without armed police and barriers? When people looked up and forward? When you could hear english being spoken?

This is good to watch!! I went here in 1987 as a 14 year old on a 5-day schooltrip. 60 Schoolkids from a small village in Holland had the time of their lives. Up till this day every time I meet someone from school, they always start with: remember when we went to London?

I remember those punk rockers with those strange fins on their heads when I first came to London in 1983, would be on a Routemaster in the Kings Road, I was a security guard for six months of 87, pleased it’s now all behind me in those uncertain times.

That real London is gone now. Feel very nostalgic as I lived there for many years

London officially shat the bed circa 2009 when BoJo became Mayor. At that point it became overcrowded, overpriced and really very unsafe. I'm 35 and can remember a time when my peers of similar age moved to London for the first time and things were much better - affordable rent in good areas, life was easier, less crime. Average monthly rents in London didn't hit £1000pcm until Easter 2010 and since then it's just been a relentless upwards march.

I was watching videos of London from 1967 and was curious to know what it looked like 20 years later. It looks a bit less colorful.

Downing Street without the more serious modern gates. Those were in place by 1989 (I got up close to them in 1997 on my first trip to London) and there is archive footage of PMQs with Maggie being teased about it. Number 10 probably also had the original wooden door at that time, which is now in storage and a modern blastproof metal door in its place. My mum remembers the 1960s and being able to just walk straight up to the door of Number 10. The only visible security was an unarmed bobby on the doorstep.

Still plenty of scaffolding, but no anti-terror bollards around Parliament Square yet. Trader Vic’s was a renowned exotic bar in the Park Lane Hilton, far too expensive to visit, but Warren Zevon made it sound as cool as Lee Ho Fook’s, which was affordable Thanks for posting (2019)

This was before a lot of high structures were built eg Canary Wharf. Now we have the Shard the tallest building and plenty of other newer buildings. You notice the calmness back then.
