Lived in Chrisp Street, Poplar for 22 years before I moved to Wapping -- great video; somehow you've managed to make an absolute dump look like an urban oasis :D

Thank you. An interesting video about Poplar history - a most interesting part of London. One person worth a mention is the Rev. William Henry Lax . In his day he was as well known as anybody who ever was associated with the area. He was born in 1868 at Chorlton-Upon-Medlock , Lancs., and as a Methodist church minister he arrived at Poplar Methodist Church, East India Dock Road in 1902 . This church at that time was in decline but as a charismatic orator and man of enthusiasm , the congregation swelled during his long years there. He was Mayor Of Poplar 1918 ~ 1919 and by then so well known locally that he was often simply referred to as Lax Of Poplar. He wrote some charming books ( including an autobiography ) with recollections of life in Poplar and the characters he knew and mixed with. He died in 1937 and the church was demolished in the mid 1970s. William Lax House - on the site where Poplar Methodist Church stood - is named after him .

The choice of music in your videos is interesting. It is not beautiful music by any means, but it is certainly addictive. I sometimes watch your videos just to hear the music. Also, informative videos, keep it up.

Until I became enamoured with Call the Midwife, I had zero awareness of the sense of community that existed in the various neighbourhoods of London. To me, there seemed to be more of a sense of community only in smaller towns, with large cities being the places to which people migrated in search of a better life. Was I wrong! This video clearly shows how people were connected to their communities by shared circumstances, careers and other features offered by cities. Great video - very enlightening!

people forget this as well but all my neighbors were born in london and have known each other for 30 plus years. I can go to the shop at the end of my road and see 20+ people i grew up with in my neighborhood.

@@princetubby5698 My gggGrandparents were married at St. Pancras Old Church on 19 January 1835. I am always looking for clues as to what their experience might have been as a newly married couple. For the sake of a little levity, their eldest son, my ggGrandfather, was listed as a "colporteur" on his own marriage register. Imagine my surprise to learn that my heritage includes the proverbial travelling Bible salesman and the farmer's daughter! I do feel a twinge of envy for people who are surrounded by life-long friends and family.

Published on 1.05.2019 and despite such a great content just 5k views! Well sorry for saying my personal opinion "at loud" but I watch all your videos with audio off reading subtitles. The music is just unbearable and the accent difficult to understand-try to improve

Sorry to hear that mate. Check out some of the other TV documentaries on Poplar though.

London stories with a London accent. Best you keep it muted rather than complain about something not worth complaining about. Keep up the good work Dewyne. I always have thebseries on record on London Live channel as well
