Hi Hannh, here in New Zealand, on the other side of the World from you, we had a bad flood people were flooded out, etc. The people who had cash could buy things ,food water... others had to borrow from them. Power was out , internet down. I'm 70yrs young and still like cash. Cheers Maureen 😊

The recent Barclays debacle ought to tell us all we need to know about the importance of cash, one IT glitch and suddenly you're not able to access your own money. The reason that you'll see a lot of small businesses prefering cash is because a tenner is always worth a tenner, but £10 paid via card or app is instantly worth around 3% less because of the bank and card merchant fees that they have to pay. In short, banks are evil 😆

That wasn't the only debacle. There was the supermarket one when they suddenly contactless stopped working. People had to abandon their trolleys and baskets of groceries at the tills. Since I usually carry some emergency cash I wasn't unconvenienced.

But then you have to send an employee to the bank to deposit it, there is the risk of robbery and if you don't put it in a bank you probably need to go and buy a safe. All of these things which arise from using cash mean a loss of time, and as they say "time is money". Then there is also the problem of the dark economy caused by the using of cash to understate income and the consequent loss of tax revenue, as well as the laundering of money, avoiding paying correct wages etc, and thus again the loss of money that this causes for the public purse - how many hospitals are not built as a result? Cash may or may not be king, but it is also the currency of jokers.

Hi Hannah, I was in Starbucks the other day and they could only take cash as their tech was broke. They turned loads away without cash to pay with! Best carry some I say for emergencies especially as banks closing means fewer cashpoints. It does amaze me that businesses are happy to turn away custom due to payment method. Great vlog as always, thank you.

Great vid Hannah! I own a small business and always prefer cash. People don't realise the bank and card charges that occur. For example if a customer uses a credit card I pay three lors of charges- a percentage of the transaction (transaction fee), rent for the card terminal, and then finally a fee from my business bank account for the card transaction. Cash is king! If we dont use it we'll lose it! ❤

I'm going to start becoming more diverse about my spending habits. I'm starting to write checks again, focus on using cash more versus my card. If we all think about privacy, cash is the best. You tend to overspend when you use cards. I feel like the more things are convenient, you set yourself up to be controlled because you concede some of your autonomy. I have started going directly into my bank more to do my part to force the banking system to accommodate my needs, also you create the need to provide a job for someone. Your example of having a problem when you traveled is exactly why I like a diverse way of spending because when things go wrong, it's awful getting service to correct problems. No issues with cash or going directly into a brick and mortar location. Great video Hannah. Suggestion for an inside video, tours of spas for health and wellness during the winter.

Tbh, age isn’t the issue with regarding to using cash or card. It varies from person to person. I’m 38 and still like to use cash because I have better control of my finances when using notes & coins compared to relying entirely on my card. We all have our own methods and no matter which one you choose, if it works for you, then definitely stick with it! 👍 This has definitely been a very interesting debate Hannah. Personally, I hope that cash will always be available, especially for thee…. more mature generations who rely entirely on cash. Also, don’t worry about what people think of you when you’re recording out on the streets. Keep doing what you love! We really appreciate the time & effort you put into creating these videos. You’re brilliant at what you do. Keep on smiling & sharing to all of us in the world! Hope this helps during the more challenging & difficult times you have? 🙏❤️

I'm in Australia and thankfully cash is still accepted in most places. Like most people now I pay by card a lot, but I do keep some cash at home for emergencies because we have had a lot of EFTPOS/banking systems go down lately, so you need cash if you need to buy anything urgently (petrol, milk, bread, medicines etc). It seems weird to me that shopkeepers would turn down what is still legal tender, but the banks don't help by charging transaction fees to deposit or withdraw cash. Small additional note - even if a shop says 'No Cash', always ask anyway. I was talking to a shopkeeper near me with one of those signs, and she said it was to deter thieves and break-ins if people thought there was no cash on the premises, and she did accept cash in store but obviously did not leave any there overnight.

I think the incidents over the last week with Halifax,Barclays etc is a prime example of why a cashless system is a recipe for disaster. The fact we have to ask some places if they take it is ridiculous. Not sure how it works in the UK, but please carry some cash when going to a farmers market or events where vendors have set up booths. I just retired from farmers markets and to give you an idea, the small business owner loses (on average) 19% for every transaction with a card and 15% for cash: 5% goes to the market fees, 10% (in my area) for state sales tax (yes, we DO pay our taxes) and if you use a card add 4% more. Like another owner said, I never turned down money in any form, but I appreciated those who paid cash because every little bit helps when you are trying to make a living.

I love that ending quote from your old boss....."If you can't be good, be careful"! Thx Hannah for sharing this vlog with the interesting topic of cash or no cash in the UK!?!? It seems that the general payment acceptance trend everywhere is moving away from cash..... Although I still see gas stations that offer a cheaper price for cash vs credit. Depending on the bank card, I know the processing fees can vary, & it is widely known that Amex charges a higher processing fee to merchants....thus fewer merchants are using Amex as an accepted payment method. Also, it looks like you are still having typical winter weather in London, just as we are in the US. Thx Hannah for braving the elements to bring us another very thought provoking & entertaining vlog! I look forward to seeing you next Friday at the same time! There was no digital anything when I was born and growing up, but we always knew that money harbours germs. The thing is, scams, loads of people lose money through scams and because it is digital, it is very rare that you can stop the money going out quickly. With cash, you don't fall into that. I have actually had my ID stolen through using a bank card. Now I only use cash and I have had no problems since.

As a Canadian, our exchange rate is so brutal when converting to the £ that when I come to the UK, I use cash to make sure I don’t overspend. Everything there essentially costs me double, so using my credit card when on holiday in the UK is tough because mentally I can’t get over seeing how expensive things are when they convert. I know that even using cash it’s still double the price, but at least i’m not seeing a list of every transaction with the exchange. If that makes any sense lol

I think one of the reason cash is preferred is the fees. In the UK, your stores and vendors arent allowed to pass on the fees. We visited a market up north who had a sign up saying cash preferred as their fees for one day were the same as the days takings. Here in Australia, the stores all pass on fees usually around 1.5% when you tap your card. Some places offer a discount for cash. I don't think cash preferred necessarily mean they aren't declaring their taxes, especially small businesses, but that a lot of their profits are eaten up by bank fees.

Same here in Australia the worst part is that businesses also pass on their charges to the purchaser as well usually about 2 to 3 percent it all adds up in a week of spending.

In a world that's moving towards digital payments, it's important to remember why cash still matters. Cash is crucial because not everyone has access to digital payments, ensuring that everyone can buy what they need, no matter their situation. It also offers privacy and security, allowing people to make purchases without leaving a digital trail and avoiding the risk of online fraud or hacking. In emergencies, such as power cuts or tech failures, cash remains useful as a reliable backup when digital systems fail. Small businesses benefit from cash transactions by saving money on high card transaction fees and keeping their prices lower for customers. Finally, maintaining cash as an option respects everyone's preferences and needs, allowing people to choose how they pay. Its essential to keep cash available for inclusivity, privacy, and security. Let's appreciate the value of cash and support keeping it in our economy. I would advise to use digital for larger purchases and cash for groceries, cafes, and buying anything under £500 for example

I prefer cash. Every place should have the option to pay by cash. I lived in U.K. for a year and hated it when they wouldn’t take cash But I always keep cash handy and sometimes even have exact change counted out before getting in queue so the people behind me don’t get toooooo worried that I’m paying by cash 😊

@@ashleykim4713 why are you surprised, what do you have against a cashless society?? You can still spend what you want. With the added bonus of not carrying around dead weight. If you’re an honest person who pays those taxes there is no reason why you wouldn’t support a cashless society. Period.

@@ashleykim4713 Nickbloy It has nothing whatsoever to do with nefarious activities it is about control and the powers that be knowing every little thing about you! It is your money after all. What will you do in a digital crash when cash only is accepted. Many times I’ve gone into a coffee shop and the till does not work so having cash I was the only one able to get whatever I wanted. I don’t like unknown entities having all my personal info when I have precisely zero about theirs. It is wrong to assume a wrong doing based on NO proof!

When I was in Sweden and Norway last year, I could have actually done the whole trip cashless which worked out better as I got a better rate on my card than changing currency. Most of my day to day in Manchester UK is cashless as well. I find it preferable personally. BUT...... that doesn't mean I am in favour of a cashless society. The options for both need to be there.

Very interesting video! I've hardly used cash since Covid - a lot of places stopped accepting cash back then and I just got out of the habit of using it. I only draw out money if I know I'm going somewhere that I'll need it. That's my choice, but I do think people should be able to use cash if they want to. And I'm glad you pointed out that the phone box at the start was huge as I was just starting to think "Wow, Hannah is much shorter than I thought!"

Fun video as always Hannah! ❤️ We visited London for the very first time last December (we are from Seattle) and we only have 100 British pounds on hand for the 9 days we were there. Used it for tipping tour guides, some souvenirs from Covent Garden market and around Camden..I think my husband used it also to pay for food inside Camden market. And then remaining coins were donated as we deboard Virgin Atlantic

I’m Gen X (so I guess that makes me older 😂), but I do not use cash. It’s filthy. I worked at a Bank when I was younger and we would wear gloves and use sanitizer constantly. It’s also to safe. One of the things I love about visiting London is that card is preferred. However, I do worry that marginalized communities who may lack access to bank accounts will be severely impacted by a nearly cashless society.

Hi Hannah! Great video and enjoyed it so much, Here in the states, most places take cash, some small stores and restaurants only take cash. Due to the cost of credit cards. Some places will add a charge to the bill if you use a credit card rather than cash. Most place post a sign on the door...Cash only! Thanks for the laughs and video!

It is advised if you are on a budget to use cash because you can actually see how much you are spending. Subliminally cards and cashless payment cause you to spend more because you are not aware of how much you are actually spending.

Hi Hanna ,I hope the different countries always have cash . I feel we have more control of our money when we use cash and a card is convenient when you do not have enough cash. I use both but I am trying to use cash more . I am from USA. Last year when my husband and I went to London part of the fun was using a different money . We are coming back this year and part of what I am looking forward to is using the money .One of the big differences is we have $1.00 bills .I always look forward to your vlogs!
