Link to Part 2: • London Overground trai...
Today we are back in London to take a look at the East London line. It is a railway line running north to south just east of the City of London from Highbury & Islington via Shoreditch, Whitechapel, and the Docklands to New Cross. Until 2007 this line was part of the London Underground, where it was operated by subsurface Metropolitan line stock.
When the line closed, it was extensively refurbished and reopened in 2010 as part of the London Overground network. Today there are frequent services operated by London Overground’s standard Class 378 “Capitalstar” stock.
In the first part of this film, we take a look at the southern end of the line at New Cross Gate and Surray Quays stations, which are located in the boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham, respectively. While Surray Quays station is solely served by the Overground, New Cross Gate is on the Brighton Main Line, which is a major railway line. As such, there are frequent mainline services stopping and passing through the station. Besides Overground trains, the film also shows a Southern service for London Bridge stopping and a brand new Class 700 Thameslink train passing through the station.
Enjoy!
