jo bo : Exactly right Milady! We didn't even considered ourselves "goths" in the sense that nowadays people give to the term! We were simply dark and different post-punk "avant-gard" teenagers establishing our identity and listening to underground music!

We were Punks back then in the seventies/eighties Not Goths....Goth became a label used to put us all in one group..We were creators of our own style but many of us did not like the posers or people who were up themselves,those who loved themselves....many of us were just normal people who did not over act or try to play something we were not....I worked with "bauhaus" back in the early 80's.people tend to make something more than it is....Bela was written by David Haskins...he said in an interview that it was written during a time when they were showing many horror films on the Tv....One such Vampire film starred Bela Lugosi....So David wrote the lyrics about That actor mixed with his character....What followed were people who then dressed In black...An funeral dress,death and the grave,skeletons,skulls were all part of old black and white films...Bela was much more of a theatrical piece because Peter would act on stage using a flight case on wheels with a light inside And he had the image to act on stage....If you asked David it wasn't really serious....Yet those who followed made it serious....People do not seem to get it....because someone acts on stage does not then make them Evil in real life.....I think people miss the whole point of what music,art,performance is all about....People have so many illusions as to who the members of bauhaus actually are...Or what they are into....In my band "kamasutra" We did a song about "rosemary's baby" the film but none of us were satanists or into black magic....I was into Early Adam and the Antz....Before they went commercial...In the late seventies Kensington,the kings road was booming with new fashion which sprouted out of the early punk scene...But If you look at the rocky Horror show....it also created the image which then lead to Punk Then Goth....In the sixties people also expressed some quite good fashion ideas.....But if you want to go back to the real originators then go back to gene Vincent.....I was called a freak,a weirdo in the late seventies and early eighties But i was never called A Goth....We Never used the word then....it was something which came out of the post punk era when people were trying to express new experimental music...The hair was short spikes which later became longer hair styles....It was more about individual style and creating your own dress and fashion yourself....Everyone looked different no one looked the same...I can remember buying two pairs of winkle pickers,pointed suede boots from shelly's show shop...One red pair,one black...And i wore one red and one black on either foot...No one had done that before...I also had a pari of trousers which was one leg black and one leg white and i bought them from a women shop because there were no such trousers in any mens shop....But as you get older you become less interested in fashion...it was all a lot to do with ego then...to the extent that people loved them selves so much that the i...would try to dominate everything...The i of the illusion of the demonic ego of self.....When David Bowie did it,it was new..he created a style,a look and it was fresh,new.....what followed were just copies...if you take Bowie Iggy pop,Lou reed,roy music,Mark Bolan...You then have the beginnings of punk and then eventually all that follows...Nothing is new any more...And nothing shocks us...youngsters who wish to dress like that now good luck to them...but when you get to my age 53...what you used to wear does not work so you dress in style according to your age but you don't have to look like what is termed a chav....lol....You can't judge a book by it's cover....In the darkness there is light....I had my day then and i was lucky to be there to see some of the best bands i have ever seen live....No one comes close to bauhaus as a live act and i've seen some pretty good bands....Peter Murphy like Bowie created theatrics with the music and the image and that is what made them so great...But when you get people who think they are actually vampires...Come on,Are you nuts?......There is no such thing as a vampire...For a start it originates from The dragon knight Vlad the impaler...which inspired Bram stoker to writer Dracula...drac..Draco is the constellation of the dragon...which is all associated with the reptilians who drink blood...it has satanic roots in the worship of the Annunaki and babylon....The roots of vampirism have roots in ancient pagan rituals and beliefs....The upside down inverted crucifix was originally the symbol for peter who was crucified upside down by Nero which then became known as the Nero cross....Nero was a pagan and anti-christian...The bloodline of the caesars originated from much earlier bloodlines who were of the serpent bloodline or reptilian blood line...The word gothic architecture existed long before it was used to describe an image....Gothic cathedrals..what is quite hilarious is the fact that many so called Goths now despise christ yet their name stems from buildings erected in honour of the King of heaven....Any one who thinks they are a vampire is like someone thinking they are napoleon,jesus or god.....vampirism has its roots also in ancient rites associated with the Reptilians also with cannibalism of primitive tribes...I'm so glad i'm a vegetarian...lol....

It doesn't matter when this video is supposed to be..(yes I can read it says 1987).The fact is i do not like labels such as The word "Goth"...i'm stating a fact that we were all labelled according to a style Or fashion....The word "Goth" and the word "Punk"...Don't mean anything to me...Iggy pop was doing what The sex pistols were doing in the sixties but it wasn't called 'Punk" then...As soon as a new music or fashion came out it was then labelled...You could say that Edgar allan poe was a Goth or Mary shelley...The point i'm making is that the word "Goth" was an invention which was very much associated with death,grave yards and Gothic buildings....Johnny cash wore black but he wasn't labelled a Goth was he?.....In 1980 i was a roadie with 'bauhaus"....But then there was no such label "Goth"....Each generation has it's own labels...."Emo" what the fatang is that?....I thought Emo was from sesame street...LOl...David The bass player said it was all done for fun and for a laugh but then people took it to serious as their ego's grew bigger and bigger...

By the time gothic was a word the best of it was over. The golden age started with Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures and the Bela Lugosi by Bauhaus in 79' and lasted through The Cure's Pornography tour in 82'. It still seemed to have some charm here, albeit too self conscious, by the time it merged with EBM and industrial and became dominated by synths it disappeared

+Materva 1974 You probably refer to the press of the late 90's, when they started citing JD and Cure as originators of Gothic. I think the best period was 1982 - 1984 with Southern Death Cult (once called "severely gothic" in I think Melody maker circa 1986 in an article on Chatshow), Skeletal Family, Sisters of Mercy and Danse Society.

JD were already described by their producer Martin Hannett as music with "gothic overtones" in frigging 1979. Not much later in te early 80s were they linked to it again with the Banshees. What's up anyway with people trying to dismiss JD's huge influence on the genre? Is the denial there to make it easier for Ian Curtis worshipping Hipsters to not feel ashamed to admit they may listen to "gawf" music?

@killforfiend I jsus do what comes natural, and since Gothic rock is one, if not my favorite musical genre, and the things I like can most easily fit under the embrella term of "goth", I identify as such when it suits me. Don't get me wrong, I go to clubs once ina while and the scene can be pretty fun, but I'm not some kind of "goth father", lol.

Hello guys, anyone here that knows in which years the Alien Sex Fiend played at the Batcave? Also, if there are any musicians that started before or during 1993 I would like to know how you felt when all of this emergent bands came off like Terminal Choice or Hanzel und Gretyl, please. Thus i'm writing a book about the gothic era in the 90's (Sheffield and London, specifically), with my husband and it would be great if we could know a bit more hence we're goths from a pretty short time until now but we like it so much we decided to write this and we want to have good and truthful information and not mess it up. Thank you in advance.

Well I was there in the goth scene between 1992 and now, but mostly active 92 - 98, played in Sheffield and London several times. I have never heard of Terminal Choice or Hanzel und Gretyl the bands that were doing the rounds in the 90s from the UK were the likes of Rosetta Stone, The Marionetts, Nosferatu, Inkubus Sukkubus, All Living Fear (my band), The Horatii, Manuskript, Vendemmian, Die Laughing, Suspiria, Killing Miranda, James ray, the Dream Disciples to name a few..
@MysteriousAsteria
@MysteriousAsteria 6 жыл бұрын
Know I am late, but Terminal Choice and Hanzel und Gretyl are fairly new and not from the 90s, the latter isn't even remotely goth. They are more Electro. In the late 90s a lot of EBM, Inudstrial and Techno started to replace classic Goth and Darkwave, and most of the elders didn't like it, as far as I can tell…

@albatross1977
@albatross1977 15 жыл бұрын
I understand your point alex but the truth is, gothic postpunks don't own the label goth or gothic, its been around far longer than the "pure pristine" genre you're talking about. Anything that is dark can technically be called gothic. The problem is that "true" goths need to come up with a more objective label for themselves than "true" or "real" if they want to distinguish themselves from emo's, metalheads, and trip hoppers.

This isn't true. The subcultures Goth supposedly branched out in actually have little to do with Goth.The musical genres that get wrongly associated with the Goth subculture are in no way descended from it. Industrial for instance precedes Goth by at least 10 years. Nobody has any right whatsoever to change what Goth means if the original subculture is still alive and well. We have plenty of new bands and plenty of young Goths who are into them. If your not one of them is your problem.

No I didn't miss the point. You' re calling people who are aware of the true definition of Goth closeminded cause they don't throw every dark themed subculture on the Goth pile. While your average Metalhead or Cyber doesn't even want to be associated with Goth. Why can't you respect the individuality and independence of musical subcultures? Does everything have to be the same? Should we call donkey's rabbits from now. They also have long ears, not doing this would discrimination wouldn't it?

@DocktorHelena311 sadly true, growing seeing what you described (known as mallgoth's) almost made me derived into their wrong means, but once i discovered real goth I thought to myself this is the sound I've been waiting for my whole life, as if i already knew (I'm serious) as long as history is preserved this sub-culture will not die for a very long time, possibly centuries, life is all about moving forward but history repeats itself, and history will be remembered not by all but some :)

I've seen mallgoth's turn either preppy, hipster, metalhead, ghetto, and few like you and I either turn goth, punk, cybergoth, rivethead, etc. my friend jessie used to like alternative rock, metal, pop-punk, and black metal and now he is a cyber-raver, I havn't seen other people evolve into goth tho, I would consider myself goth, punk, rivethead, new waver, beatnik :)

Another huge problem I see with the goth scene of today is all this horrid elitism. To those people who are so discriminate as to what is and isn't goth, get this: Goth has grown! Its branched out into many, many subcultures, and it still growing. Some believe that its merged with the Industrial/Rivethead culture as well, even though the two had quite separate starts. I say, as long as you have a penchant for the weird and slightly (or very) creepy, welcome.
