London cycle routes

Күн бұрын

You can cycle from Barnes in south west London to Hammersmith in west London, entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.
The route is 2.5km long (1.5 miles) and makes use of Hammersmith Bridge, which recently opened to cycling, Cycleway 9, and quiet streets leading up to the bridge.
If you find this video useful or you just enjoy watching it please remember to subscribe to the channel and hit the bell icon so you're alerted to new videos, as I try to post new ones like it every week.

Opening the bridge to (mounted) cyclists for just 10 weeks feels like a bit of an election gimmick - but hopefully we can pressure H&F council to keep it open for longer. I regularly walk across the bridge, and I have never actually seen work happening on the bridge.

@@Londoncycleroutesit’s definitely a gimmick. The bridge has been needing structural work for a long time, hence why it has been closed to motor vehicles. But neither TFL nor H&F council want to pay for the repairs the work to make it useable for vehicles again. TFL are only willing to fund half the cost and expect the council to fund the rest, which is millions. Lots have complained about it. Opening up to cycles (and presumably) foot traffic is just them trying to show it’s not going to waste and something is actually being done about the bridge rather than just letting it go to waste!

Loved it! I'm regaining my confidence to cycle in London again just by watching your vids. If I have one critique, it's that the council put far too many pylons, lights and other detritus on the bridge. That's a huge amount of distraction and waste of space that could be used for much easier cycling.

I worked in Roehampton many years ago and cycling across the bridge in traffic was vile as it's very narrow, was very busy and the drivers hated people on cuycles being in the way. I used to walk across on the crowded pavements so I could look at the water rather than fearing for my life. So I must go back and ride this whilst it's car free.

Cars won't be using it again anytime soon. The latest projection for their 'possible' return is 2028 - but tbh, the bridge is too frail to carry lumbering SUV's over it; and wasn't designed to carry 21st century traffic volumes. So I wouldn't worry about not having much time to cycle over the bridge before cars return. My bet is that they'll never return. And this beautiful bridge will be for pedestrians and cyclists, very much for the long term.

Fantastic video! I grew up in the area, the car traffic when the bridge was open it was truely awful, backed up on both sides of bridge by about a mile. I would sometimes cycle instead of taking the bus across but the bridge crossing was too narrow and was only for the brave. I'm seriously happy it has reopened to bikes again as too many people were riding bikes across the pedestrian walkways which make walking across the bridge frustrating. Ideally they can get some sort of golf cart shuttle service to cross the bridge and link the two bus stops on either bank of the bridge so my elderly relatives can get to Hammersmith via public transport. Unfortunately they are too infirm to cycle and find the walk across the bridge too difficult. The 533 replacement bus service from Barnes to Hammersmith Broadway via Chiswick bridge can take an hour in peak traffic.... Really difficult Speaking as somewhere grew up there, i remember rhe bridge being closed for a year or so in the late 90's and the lack of traffic was great. The air pollution now is much much less since the closure, to the extent that one of my relatives who lives there no longer needs to take their preventative asthma medication. Hoping the cycle route stays open permanently as I want to try riding accross it soon!

That’s fascinating about your relative and air quality- thanks for a really interesting comment. I agree about the buses and people with mobility needs- there are some proposals to have some kind of shuttle over the bridge and I believe the council has now said it’ll look into this… hopefully they can find a solution that works for everyone.

As a regular user of the bridge by bike, bus and on foot I can confirm the traffic and air quality at the top of Castelnau is much improved. But in Mortlake, where most of the diverted traffic goes to cross Chiswick Bridge, it is now truly awful. If they spent less money on cones, traffic marshalls and pointless task forces, they might actually have arrived at a proper solution for everyone by now.

The Thames path is a really popular place for people who live in Hammersmith to go for walks, bike rides, dog walks etc - and there's always loads of people sat outside Riverside and the other pubs and restaurants having a drink. I love it down there but every time I'm there I look at the gorgeous bridge and listen to the sound of the water and of people chatting and I think, if the bridge allows motor traffic again, all you'll be able to hear is engines. The vibe is so lovely and tranquil at the moment, it'll be a shame when the cars come back. Do agree that a bus route over the bridge would be super beneficial though.

My husband and I used to walk along the Thames path from Winslow/Manbre Roads in Hammersmith to drink at the Blue Anchor in the mid-80s. Hammersmith Bridge was the best part of the walk. The corner Victorian terraced flat painted white we rented is still there, but the view of the Thames, Barnes, and the Sugar Factory we used to have isn't (time marches on). Sure, we had pubs closer to us, but the walk was half the fun. I even worked for a short spell as a barmaid at the Blue Anchor. Hammersmith Bridge will always be iconic for me.

As someone who drives in to London from Surrey about twice a month, the bridge being closed is annoying, as it makes Putney bridge even more horrible to use than before and I'm forced to cross at Battersea or Albert bridges. However, it's clearly quite a nice way to prioritise pedestrian and cycle traffic. I think they should have done this way sooner, and possibly keep it permanently. I'm curious to know if the bridge is now carrying more people across it than it used to with cars? Would be an interesting study.

The main problem we have with old bridges like Hammersmith Bridge is that they were built in the era of the horse and cart and were never designed to be constantly slapped by HGVs, heavy vans and large numbers of cars. And car companies are now pushing motirists to switch from light-weight cars to heavier (and more dangerous) SUVs. It was stupid for central government to abolish the Greater London Council and hand Hammersmith Bridge to a local council. The bridge is of stratigic importance to all of London, as there is a bus hub at Hammersmith Station. Clearly, when a massive structure, like Hammersmith Bridge starts to fall apart, there is no way that local council tax payers can afford to pay for it to be replaced. And yet central government has not offered to hand over money to build a new version of Hammersmith Bridge. It should now be owned by the Mayor or London. But, whoever owns this antique bridge is cursed, as it was listed in 2008 and that means that whoever is looking after it has to make something never designed to handle double-decker buses not collapse into the river. Money needs to be offered to repair the bridge. And, as much as heriatage is important, not having this bridge collapse and kill people is far more important. So, if changes need to be made to strengthen the bridge English Heriatage needs to suck it up. They can't stand in the way of safety. One way to make sure the wear and tear on the bridge is as low as possible (after it is repaired) is to get rid of the heavy vehicles that the bridge was never designed to carry. However, we need to radically lower car dependency in London, so I'm afraid that it is in the public interest for Hammersmith Bridge to reopen for buses in the future. The same could be said for emergency service vehicles, such as police cars and ambulances. Using the bridge for fire engines might be pushing it a bit, as they are much heavier. But shortening the time for fire engines to get across the Thames can save lives. So there is a real public interest in considering that. However, deliveries across Hammersmith Bridge are not in the public interest. Vehicles coming from outside London can take other routes, so can easily be diverted away from the bridge. And there is also no public interest in opening the road up to private motor vehicles. The road to the south of the bridge is now quieter and the air is much cleaner. If a return of motor vehicle traffic is ruled out, the entire peninsular can be made into a low traffic neibourhood and the air quality in that region of London can be permanantly improved. We should, in fact, be looking to repeat this with some other bridges, that have not collapsed yet. Chelsea Bridge would appear to be a good candidate to be converted into a bridge for buses, emergency vehicles and cycles only. And any new river crossings in East London should be designated as bus, emergency vehicles and bikes only routes.

Life jackets optional - they took the traffic off the bridge because it's condition's reached the point where they'd have buses in the drink. The bridge is beyond repair, so they hope light usage won't cause a problem. Our good colleague Plainly Difficult might be able to tell them otherwise, corrosion at that point means it's only a matter of time. Thousands of London, folk in these areas have to suffer continuous Aircraft noise ( even from 5 am ) ATB. anyway, Peace to all ( Somehow )

I’d love to do more around there- I’ve been to Croydon a couple of times (check the map of routes below). Sutton is really tricky as the council has done very little for cycling as far as I can tell, but I live in hope and will keep searching!

An accidental London W for active transportation. I wish the council saw the value in this but UK motorists and tabloids are notoriously stubborn and paranoid.

Hah yes it is very much an accidental W!

Breaking news, the bridge finally collapsed under the weight of all them plastic cones and ridiculously high barriers. 😂 It looks a right mess and really narrow in places.

There must of been bike traffic on this bridge when people were walking across since 2019. Did they have cops standing there barring the cyclists? Funny with this bridge. It's old looking in style, historical, and esthetically pleasing, yet they're not repairing it? It would seem as if they could include the buses perhaps one way only, or all motor traffic one way only, and still have the space for two directions of cycling.

They do actually have 24/7 Marshalls there now but I don’t know if they always have

@cycleroutesSeems like a waste of manpower to me. Are there other reasons like muggings?

no it seems to be about motorcycles, but also I think keeping an eye on the bridge generally as it's a construction site @@derekjolly3680

Hopefully by the time it would be physically possible to reopen H'smith Bridge to cars, London's anti-car revolution will be developed even more and it wouldn't be politically viable.

at the moment it suits the Labour run H&F council and Labour Mayor to blame the Tory central government (and vice versa). slight worry that assuming Labour win the next general election, there won't be anybody to blame for keeping SUVs off the bridge!

@@fToo'it suits'?? You're making it out like they are just blaming them just to have someone to blame. Thats absolutely not the case, LBHF's critisisms of both TfL and the DfT are very valid and they want the bridge to get fixed asap.

Or they could tear it down and build a new one that’s safer and more practical but you know, Europe, history, old rusty architecture. In some cases, I get it, but this is an important bridge. I’ve moved back to Canada and I can see our 90 year old local bridge being torn down and rebuilt outside my window as we speak. If they are no longer fit for purpose then just build a new one if it’s cheaper!

Never get off your bike and push it, motorists aren't expected to get out and push theirs , I'm the one being green, they'll have to work around me. Pedestrian powered bicycle is still pedestrian. Ride wherever you want, it's the government pushing for zero whatever...I am ...try and make me get off and push it, see how that works out for ya 😂👍
