London Underground: Old Tube Trains on the Bakerloo Line

This film shows some old 1972 Tube Stock on the Bakerloo Line of the London Underground.
As the name suggests, the 1972 Stock has been manufactured in the 70s, and it is currently the oldest underground stock in service at the London Underground.
The films shows some trains entering and leaving Waterloo and Lambeth North stations, as well as a short ride from Elephant & Castle to Lambeth North.

For old trains - they are pretty well maintained. Trains in my city are only a few years old and already breaking down due to poor maintenance. With the way things are going, these trains will outlive our newer trains.

These trains will be in service for another seven years at least. Plans for them include a brand new refurb inside again, the removal of the no smoking signs on the windows (sadly), new traction motors are also a possibility and a new vinel exterior and interior. They were going to transfer 1967 stock from the Victoria line onto the Bakerloo as well but sadly they are programmed for ATO and are not compatible with Bakerloo line signalling. Hence why they were scrapped. The 1973 stock on the Piccadilly line are due to be replaced with NTFL first in 2021, then the Central and Waterloo and City Lines and finally the Bakerloo line. I am guessing the 1972 or 1992 stock will be moved to the Island Line on Isle Of Wight to replace the 1938 stock there. The 1973 stock are almost certainly all destined for the scrapyard.

Although I have only been on it 4 times ( Marylebone - Embankment and back twice ), I love the squeaking and the clickity clack of the Bakerloo lines old trains.

These trains have been thoroughly refurbished. Originally they were unpainted aluminium on the outside and the interiors were VERY different- the rounded panels by the doors were much more square and the seats had proper arm-rests. They were first introduced on the Northern line and I well remember seeing one and being very impressed. I was sitting on a 1938 stock train at the time and dashed across the platform so I could be the first in my "Underground Train Club" to ride on one. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories with you excellent film. You did well to find a time with fewer passengers.

Yeah they are old trains, but its quite nice seeing a foreigner's idea of them, they are some of the fastest on the tube network actually and reach their top speed frequently between stations, you dont rally see the speed, you feel the speed when riding on it.

The Bakerloo line on the whole is a pretty quiet line, only in rush hour in the Oxford Circus area does it get crush loaded, and events at Wembley people going to Wembley Central. Other than that it’s pretty dead hence why its upgrades keep getting pushed back as the Central and Piccadilly lines are far more in need of converting first.

Fun fact. These trains were considered to be upgraded to ATO on the jubilee line in the underground section. They would use the same system as the 1967 stock trains sadly that didn't happen and they ran as OPO

I still think they have treated the 1973 stock a lot better than these units. When they were refurbished between 1998 and 2000 they had new centre windows installed, Passenger information screens put in and Dot matrix destination points installed. I could never understand why they did this with the 1973 stock and didn't bother doing it with the 67 and 72 stock. Although I have heard the new flooring and seating is just the start of the refurbishment of 72 stock as it will be in service another seven years at least. You can see they have had their outside paintwork stripped off on some units and some traction motors sound quieter and different from the others. It would however not surprise me if the Bakerloo line gets overlooked for NTFL and they use 92 stock on this line instead. They are bound to come up with the excuse that they have run out of money to complete rolling it out.

The 1972 mk2 stock made its service debut on the then new Jubilee line in the 70s, a few worked on the Northern Line for a while before transferring to the Bakerloo Line in the late 1980s, releasing the spare 59s working there back to the Northern line. The 1959 stock that worked on the Bakerloo Line, were spares from the Northern Line as there were service cuts on the Northern Line so they went to help on the Bakerloo Line to get rid of the 38s on the line.

Both types were ordered quickly so they copied the 1967 Victoria Line cousin stock in design but both were driver and guard operation. Nice video and this 1972 stock is actually 8 years younger than a R32 C,J & Z train since the R32 entered service in 1964 on the N and Q trains (Coney Island to Astoria Ditmars Blvd weekdays with N via 4th ave exp Q via Brighton Lcl & Broadway Express 57th-7th weekends Late Nights local after 10pm) and also 2 -3 years younger than a R42 J & Z due to the fact that the R42 started service during 1969-1970. Regarding Lambeth North it seems to resemble the BMT portion of Brooklyn Bridge City Hall Chambers Street platform for the J & Z trains since both Chambers St and Lambeth North was built from 1890s-1920

Unlike the A stock, no matrix displays, Outdated destination bar blinds on the ends, Manual announcements, unlike all other lines, and they have soo many electrical sparks when crossing tracks due to a loose shoe bogie, and once, an A stock caught on fire because it was running top speed, then it's bogies exploded. And they keep having fires from the motor

Only member of the family still in active service on the Bakerloo Line. It's 1967 1st stock cousin long scrapped from the Victoria line. Second Cousin 1972 mk1 scrapped from duties from Northern Line in 1999 but a small number have been converted to driver only working and refurbished to Mk2 standard also on the Bakerloo Line. Subsurface cousin C Stock scrapped from Circle, Hammersmith and City and District line between Wimbledon and Edgware Road.

There were plans to replace the 72 stock next year, although plans have been delayed and they will be replaced from 2025-27 at the earliest, with the 73 stock on the Piccadilly being replaced first in 2022. The 92s will then be next, replaced around 2029-32.
