This piece consists of variations on the theme of the “Londonderry Air,” the melody of which is known to many.
Theme
As the piece opens, the woodwinds form the backbone. They are soon joined by the brass section for a sweet rendition of the “Londonderry Air” melody.
First Variation
The first variation begins with a jaunty melody played in 6/8 time by euphonium, tenor sax, and bassoon, over which the high woodwinds play a variation on the theme.
The brass section later becomes the main focus, as rhythmic variations are played through overlapping passages of 6/8 and 3/4 time.
Second Variation
Played at a relaxed tempo, this variation incorporates figures from the theme. A woodwind-focused passage transitions to an alto sax solo.
Third Variation
A buoyant, vivace variation unfolds in 4/4 time, with fragments of the theme making appearances at points along the way.
Fourth Variation
This variation, in which the theme is played in a minor key, takes the form of a waltz. A further variation emerges in the second half, with the melody played sweetly by piccolo, flute, and oboe.
Fifth Variation to Finale
An ensemble of keyboard percussion instruments is eventually joined by the full ensemble. The theme makes its majestic return, paving the way for the piece to conclude at a jaunty tempo in 6/8 time.
