One remarkable thing about this cover that probably escapes a lot of younger listeners was just how RADICAL and DANGEROUS it was for Jimmy to keep that lyric intact, “BOY.” In the 80’s, there were plenty of idiots out there who would drag off and pummel you if they even suspected you were gay. This is just a great 80s dance floor filler; great memories , the dancers look like they are having an absolutely great time and the way Richard Coles slid in to the moves was superb, god I loved those days.

in the 80's some friends and i tried these dance steps as soon as the song was played and it was always really cool because a lot of people joined us. it was absolutely magical how the music brought us together...no twerking, no tit show...just enjoy the music, the rythm and having fun. Now i'm a little bit older but i still can't keep calm when i listen to this song. 🙂

First, a shout out to Mr. Clifton Davis for writing this fantastic piece of music. Thank you! I've been around long enough to have been around when the Jackson 5 and Gloria Gaynor released their version of this song (both of which are fantastic) so I am quite familiar with this song. I just recently stumbled across this version by the Communards and I was WOWED!! It may be the best version yet!. Absolutely love it. It got my 75 year old bones up and dancing.

Golly this takes me back. I was 17 and loved the way Jimmy could dance so naturally and wanted to be able to move like he could on the dance floor. He did such amazing work promoting equality for gay men in the 89s at a time when there was still major hostility from just about every section of society. I remember it challenged me as a straight man to reconsider my own prejudice coming from a very white straight coal mining community and I have to thank him for that. I still remember having a massive crush on one of the girl dancers in the video back then (dark haired girl in tartan skirt on right of line) so if by any chance you ever read this you set my heart a flutter!
