Just saw this, what a NIGHTMARE!!! I admired that there was no giving up and no turning back for you. I live in South Texas and have been thinking about doing this for the first time with my son...but after watching what you have gone through...I just don't know anymore.

Thank you for your video. It’s been such a joy to watch your journey. I love the lsht. I haven’t thru hiked it, I’ve just done day hikes and short overnight trips. Just wanted to tell others that the trail is not always wet. I’ve been out on it on dry days and it is very beautiful and peaceful.

Good thing you brought waterproof shoes! 🤣 Thanks for uploading this to KZbin! I'm actually thinking about doing this trail this January. I'm going to do some more research and see if this was a fluke, or typical January trail conditions. I'm hoping it was just from a big storm and not a regular thing. I'm like you, I'd rather be cold and wet than hot and covered in 'skeeters. That's mind-boggling that you did 96 miles in those conditions. That's just awesome! Well done. 👍

I have been hiking around the LSHT a few times and i would never take a tent. I use my Hammock every time.. too wet out there for my liking. Thanks for the video. Love seeing thru hikes.

Ok. Starting where I left off. That campsite looks far better than the swamp you walked in on day 1. Very pretty. I finished watching. Wow. Lots of wetness. I don’t think I would enjoy that as much as you did. Still wondering about your wet feet and clothes. Good video. Good editing. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing your thru hike. I found it quite interesting. Couple of questions, if you don't mind me asking?: What's the "Turn by turn directions "? you kept mentioning? And, did you have any more encounters with wild hogs? I went out there on New Years day and wanted to hike from TH#14 to 15 but it was so waterlogged I had to quit at FM 954. Plus, another hiker I ran into out there, and I, we encountered a herd of hogs directly on the trail which made us get off trail and go around them. No fun.

The turn by turn directions I was referring to were from the website. lonestartrail.org/docs/hikersguide.html No more hogs this time. One time when I was section hiking it, a herd of hogs came up to my tent (without my rainfly) while I was sleeping. Blowing my whistle scared them off. I didn't see much wildlife. I assume it was due to all the water in the woods.

Thanks for the video. Have you tried Maprika? It uses the GPS on your phone and doesn’t need service to navigate. You can download maps of the LSHT.

I have not tried Maprika. I will look into it. I was using the Alltrails app. For $36.00 a year it will allow access with no cell service. It does have the LSHT on it. So does the REI app Hiking Project.

It will take me a couple of days to watch this but so far I have a question. How did you keep your feet dry? You can’t keep walking with wet feet can you? Blisters? Wet clothes?

Mindy W. - sorry for the late reply. I carried more socks than normal. Had to use same pair the last 2 days. For about 5 minutes each morning my feet were dry. I wear a thin pair of socks with individual slots for each toe. I call these liner socks. I then put synthetic-wool blend socks on top of those. Keeps me blister free. First time I tried with just one pair of socks and failed miserably.

I have been pondering this trail. I cannot stand being cold and wet. I am not able to warm up and I am prone to hypothermia... But the summer brings the bugs and the snakes and other unpleasant beasties.

Great video! Your determination in adverse conditions, especially when losing the trail is inspiring. I'm wondering how far you had to bushwhack after crossing the spillway at mile marker 32? Did you ever find the trail before making it to trailhead #7, Huntsville (next to I-45) or did you have to bushwhack for 3 miles? Also, what app were you using? Thanks!

I found the trail when I got to a creek that night that was full of heavy rain. I walked north as I felt I was south of the trail. I found a footbridge and was back on the trail. I don't know how long I was out there. I would guess I was was off the trail for an hour. But I don't thing I was far off the trail ever.

Outstanding video. I didn't know it was a thru hike trail that close to Houston. My goal is to try it this fall. I'm not an real hiker like you. Any pointe s you or anyone could give me.

I lied in Spring for 12 years and did not know this existed until I had moved to San Antonio 2 years later. Advise could be to do some overnight hikes or three day hikes on other trails (to avoid boredom) to see to what you gear you like and what gear you don't. Accept that you're going to smell awful.

I have a very good friend in the Houston Area that followed me to drop my truck at the end and bring me to the start. The post hike burger was good. Had a double order of onion rings and three draft Shiners. I put back a lot the calories I lost. Thanks for watching. I am surprised how many people have watched since I was making this for my children. (They asked me to put it on KZbin)

As important as fire is I can't believe you don't carry a backup lighter. You should just carry a magnesium stick and a knife. That mag. stick will throw crazy sparks even if it gets wet. As long as you have a knife or other sharp object to rub against it then you will always have the ability to light a stove or light some kindling. I'm sure you know all this though.
