I always wondered why not keep the herders restrained and move to the peak with them. Yeah, it would be slower, but they were already having coms issues, and there's no guarantee coms would work any better at the peak. At least by bringing the herders with them, they would eliminate the risk of them notifying the Taliban of their presence before establishing coms. Then once they established coms to coordinate the exfil, they could decide when and where to cut the herders loose, giving the team the best odds of getting out safely.

I’m former Army LRSD Comms retired in Louisiana. The obvious mistake was letting the kid go rather than the old man. The old man would have taken a month to get off the mountain leaving plenty of time for extraction. The Sat Comm shown was a Globalstar handheld. The sat radio antennas sucked ass and were unreliable. GlobalStar had actual Satellite Antenna problems at the time, a bird actually burned out and they were trying to launch more into space but were suffering delays. The result was a low channel to subscriber ratio and thus low reliability. I was cringing knowing this and can’t believe the logistics support group didn’t have a HF Comms relay station setup in support.
@coltbenbow58304 жыл бұрын
So you think they should have killed the kid or tied him up and left him or brought him along ? Common man how can you judge their decision especially being a part of the military you should know that any decision they made was what they thought the best option was at the time! It’s easy to look back now and say it’s the wrong one but you shouldn’t judge them you weren’t there!

Zipped Cuffed. My opinion is my own and typical of that which came out in debrief. I’m pretty sure this scenario has been studied and incorporated into training. If/when/where I’ve been deployed or what situations I’ve been in isn’t any of your business.

This is one of the few times having an Army BDE Colt team running Retrans would have been perfect. Sadly, we were underutilized and went away. We learned this lesson in ‘98 when 10th Group loaned us TACSAT systems. We still hauled around our SINCGARS. If only we cross trained more, maybe the Lutrell’s whole team could have come back.

Another option: Tie 2 of the herders up. Take one to the exfil. When the chopper is on site release the one and he can go release to two others. I'd take the middle one. Old man might slow you down and the youngest may not yet know his way around. But the teenage/early 20s would be the most likely to try and escape if tied up. Once the team is out he's in no position to give them away. All that being said, the actual timeline seems to give the impression the Taliban were already aware the team was in its AO and were already actively looking for it.
@urpoeleppajarvi21524 жыл бұрын
Personally, before I also wondered how the prisoners were released so easily. Making their movement more difficult would be a good time saver, as Navy Seal said. It was also strange that Patrol stayed waiting for the pursuers. The Finnish army teaches that you only move as fast and as far as possible so that the pursuers get lost your footsteps. Even though they have dogs, dogs tend to get tired before the soldiers, who are in good condition. In the last war against the Russians, Finnish long-range patrols were able to escape the pursuers for almost 2 days (60-80 km), behind enemy lines before starting to rest. In films in such situations, people foolishly hide in a building or a place that attracts attention. If hiding in an unobtrusive place, the person is hard to find. Great analysis

It’s simply that like he said there are SEALs in Ft Levinworth for stealing trophy guns. The rules of engagement and fear that our soldiers go through of their own military courts putting them away in prison for life if they don’t agree with a kill or didn’t follow the ROE is jsut disgusting. Our military courts tie our soldiers hands behind their backs with ROEs with e enemy’s thst don’t have any, it helps level the playing field which is BS. When a soldier is terrified to kill an enemy becasuse he’s worried about prison it makes them second guess. Not being able to fire on maneuvering enemy armed fighters on your position unless fired upon is the common story of Afgansitan and Iraq. We want our soldiers to do the military thing so we should let them do it as they see fit. 3 sheep herders with a Taliban radio and no comms is a very direct and guaranteed threat of life but as we saw it was fear of reprocussions that Mike Murthy made his decision on thst ultimately took his life , 2 of his team mates and 24 others on the Chinook. If the high ups send in a tier 1 SEAL team of our absolute best to kill a terrorist leader that killed 20 marines that month, they should be able to do their job at whatever means necessary.

I recently read it, and like most tough decisions it was complicated. The fact they couldn’t fully morally justify it was a crucial part, as was the fact that our culture demands it, but it seems like it was a roiling decision to have to make for all of them, and one even declined to vote at all. I’d have supported them for either decision, and can say I honestly see both as equally justified and it’s only the fact that Christianity makes me value mercy and sacrifice that makes me prouder that they handled it this way than If they’d done the smarter thing

@@johndough2093 ..the herder has a radio on him. Most likely the Taliban have checkins with the herders. When the guy misses his check-in the taliban will go looking for him. Taking them with you slows you down. In my opinion they would have been better off tying them to a tree in a secluded or hard to see area (tree with bushes in front of it)... or one guy on the team takes the herders away from the herd in a direction counter to the direction the team is gonna travel... leave some clues to lead to the herders, and tie them up in a hard go see spot away from the herd. It’s not about hiding them so they are never found, it’s just about buying time and leading the search party on a scavenger hunt to find the herder which buys the team more time and hopefully blurs which direction the team went in a little. I would also take a rubber band and hold the herder’s radio on broadcast and then tie the radio to one of the goats. Sure the taliban and other herders will switch to another channel when they realize someone has an open mic on... but again it just creates some confusion and buys some time. I would also do something a little degrading with the herders... like strip them naked, and choke them out... while unconscience, tie them up to each other in a 69 face to junk, hands zip tied (and duct taped) to thighs/knees, head (and hair) duct taped to pelvis across the hips and ass. Maybe even beards duct taped to balls (think of the pain trying to pull that off!!!! They’ll have to try to cut it off just to get them up off the ground!!)... then cover them completely with a tarp or blanket and some foliage on top to hide them a little. Maybe stick them down between some rocks or deep in some bushes. It creates a conundrum for the herders when they finally come to... they are disoriented, in darkness, taped and tied up to each other in ways that make it painful to move and once they realize what is taped to their faces, it’s super embarrassing! Do they want to get found with each other’s dick in their faces/mouths? Eventually they will have to give in and give their position away but it might make them try to get free longer before trying to signal to passing search parties for help... but that’s just me... I’m sick in the head like that! Hahahaha. I just think of that sort of thing on the fly! Lol! 😱😱😱
@stevewitte25014 жыл бұрын
Of course its easy to monday morning quarterback fifteen years later, but I always thought the same thing. Tie them up, take them with on the way to the last point of reasonable comm signal strength and cut them loose before making the call to confirm the target. That would've bought them time to get the rest of the team in play and complete the mission. Of course there's always something that could go wrong with that plan as well. Better than doing nothing at all.
@Atonement-4 жыл бұрын
Here's the truth about it... it's definitely a humane proposal...but it doesn't matter because the outcome might've been worse (Lutrell not make it out either possibly)....we KNOW THIS because in testimony later on & confirmed by Ghulab himself via people he knew in Sha's clan, Sha's entire unit was already on top of the guys... they stated they closely watched as the SEAL team "appeared to be debating what to do after compromise"... this validates Luttrell's story too which is cool... these are the same Taliban unit who took out the QRF as well as road vehicles via remote IED detonation from atop mountain (there's actual footage of both on the Web).

@@chadhildreth4834 there are some amazing accounts on KZbin (interviews and documentaries) that are from military personel that were actually there that clear some things up a lot and confirm other things. Black rifle coffee company interviewed one of the PJ’s dropped to recover the 3 SEALs bodies and gives a ton of info and another channel hs a documentary of the rescue of Lutrell which the movie got completely wrong. The documentary interviews the Blackhawk crew that rescued Lutrell , the pilot and rest of crew and both PJ’s that actually retrieved Lutrell. For one it wasn’t a daytime rescue and Apaches strafing Taliban, our special operations doesn’t work that way, the potential loss of helicopters and personel would be too high I. The middle of a fight and middle of day. He was rescued in a night mission by 2 160th SOAR Blackhawks , there were no Apaches with them becasue they got the wrong coordinates and flew way out of the way so the Apaches had to return before arriving for fuel so 2 Blackhawks went in anyway using nightvision and sensors , located his claimed location which was on the side of a 1,500’cliff mountain village and hd a hell of a time trying to get the PJs on the ground. Not sure why this was SO far off from what they claim , wel I guess it’s Hollywood. Be interesting to see if they get the “alone at Dawn” Combat controller John Chapman’s movie right? Even Lutrell said he could be there for most the filming so he’d advise at base camp and then they’d go film and do their own thing admitting some Hollywood liberties were taken. It’s why I appreciate al the testimonies from those who were there in other capacities , paints a pretty clear picture . Not often we have drone footage like first ever recorded Medal of Honor viral video but love that it shows that our special operations community are actually super human war fighters.

As I understood from other sources on the subject - the enemy had heard or somehow determined the chinook touching down on a nearby peek that night, so they were already acting with a heightened awareness. Now the seal team had no way of knowing this but I find it suspect that these three goatherders randomly stumble upon this four man team by sheer coincidence alone, especially with that walky talky on them. But all "shoulda, woulda, coulda" quarterbacking aside I would've killed them. I'd see it as way too much of a coincidence and put one 556 in each of their heads and then police the casings. If they want to try and blame it on US special forces, hey the Taliban is going to do that no matter how large or small the bullet holes are. It's fucked up. It's war. Rather have these guys suffer from PTSD and nightmares but still come home alive. Bless our troops and thank each of you for your service.

The only other option I see (not that I’m second guessing them) is duck tape their mouth, keep them flex cuffed and have them walk down the mountain far enough away. The mission is already compromised. When you get far enough away, cut them loose (constantly trying coms). When they leave, change direction so they think your exfil is going one way but you change direction

I always thought I would of kept them tied up but not immobile, but I’ve heard that it might of not been the herders that gave their position away, a group of Taliban had been tracking them previously to them encountering the goat herders!!!!

There was a parallel documentary about this where that guy that helped marcus to survive spoke up of the events that unfolded during that mission. What he said was the villagers and the taliban already knew they were there, the goat herders wasnt at fault and said even they were aware there was something going on specially when they heard the loud heli arriving at night. They were just unfortunate to stumble upon the seal team.

Your battle belt set-up is what drew my attention to your channel. I really enjoyed this movie as it was really intense and about real life instead of fiction. I thought just turning them loose was illogical, at least injure them or do something that would slow them way down or just tie e them up until mission accomplished and then turn them loose on return. Eliminate the threat since they had a radio, what would a goat herder want with a radio anyway? Remaining covert at all times using cover absolutely. Did you ever do Part II? Ok found it.

8:51 my option based on my service: Tie the herd of men up. 3 Soldiers hike to send/recieve comms. Once 3/4 of the team is at the RDVS, soldier holding herd hostage, cuts them lose and hall-ass to RDVS with team. By this time birds are in the air.
@frogmantactical4 жыл бұрын
Definitely a possible option. The concern there is the herders are on a time line and the Taliban do check on them via radio so when they don't respond, the Taliban would send someone out to find them which wouldn't be good either. Have a great day and God bless
@jackbauer41864 жыл бұрын
My theory is they could have brought them with them up the mountain at gunpoint, then radio for support once the comms are up. This theory, though, would also mean the herders were missing if the Taliban was radioing in to check on them. It maybe would have bought them enough time perhaps to get the extract activated. Thanks for the video.

@@frogmantactical ...very true. And if the taliban is checking on herders and would go looking for them if there was no radio check in, then there is really no way they would have frozen to death if left tied to a tree... so that probably would have been a better option than letting them go.

11:26 his reasoning is even better than mine. Mine was a bit of an option 2 variant, where i thought tying them all up and bringing them along with them up to the extraction point while having a watchful eye on them, then call for extract, and if the call don't go through, they would not have to worry about the taliban chasing them as they would still have the herders hostage and they would still be watched over.
@BALLzDeep19864 жыл бұрын
Either safeguarding all 3 belly down, hog tired & gagged, splitting up in 2s or 1 safeguarding the 3 until they establish coms or hiking all 3 tied together, gagged until they find coms but releasing them anytime before phase 2 of the op was a death sentence!
@mcanfd07714 жыл бұрын
Take their radio and tie them up together so its harder for all three to get down the mountain with the hope of gaining more ground to get out of the area. Otherwise you have to take them out.

I agree that they could have extracted with them or bring them to a rendezvous point and interrogate them since they clearly have a special interest to that area and group. They may know how and where he travels. The team could drop them off at the extraction team and go back to finish the mission

Good to hear a SEAL giving thoughts on this and alternative options. It doesn't matter if the Taliban already knew they were there. That decision only helped the Taliban get the Intel of where they were heading and they got the information much quicker.If it was that important of them knowing they were there, then they would have engaged them much sooner. Their number one priority should have been getting comms to work before making any decision of cutting them loose. If you already know that comms is shotty at best, the last thing you need is a young man on their side sprinting to them to give them Intel that your team just said in the open. That's why it doesn't matter of if their presence were known. We are going off the information the team had. Even then it should be safe to assume that they may be aware of their presence. All more reason to make sure comms is good before making any decision that would give the Taliban more advantage. It's really just a risk management thing and they should have gone with the option that would minimize damage and bought them more time. They instead chose an extreme option that they knew for sure would lead to engagement while praying that comms would work instead of ironing it out beforehand.

You can tell it's hollywood when they are discussing what to one of the scenes you can see the shadow of someone in the background walking from left to right. THey could take them with them until they get comms then tie them together and go to a point and wait for qrf. They would be farther from the town, and it would buy more time.

I’m pretty sure Marcus has said they were going to kill them. That they came up with every scenario under the sun for what to do with the guys. And then the goats came up the mountain. Changed everything. They realized they couldn’t let the goats go back down to the village without the men. I think the issue was trying to salvage the mission. If you cut them loose... why stay? They should have got the hell out of there.
@badkarmaonezero4 жыл бұрын
The movie portrays it differently, Marcus was for killing the Goat Herders. Axe was against the idea, Mike Murphy pulled rank
@hibuddywuzsup5713 жыл бұрын
It still beats letting the men go. If you had to pick between the men getting there first or the animals, it still makes more sense for the animals to show up without the men. Animals can't talk and would take much longer to get there. Hell even if the Taliban are there scratching their heads wondering where the herders are, it at least buy the SEALs more time.
@alohafy4 жыл бұрын

@danieldonnelly62052 жыл бұрын
I say have 2 of them Dietz and someone else move to try and get the coms working and leave 2 with the herders to keep an eye on them. Once they get coms working and figure out a time til extract then they can figure out what to do with the herders. Ok so say extract is going to be at 15:00 hours, and it'll take about 15 minutes to get down the hill to the village. Release the herders at 14:55 hours. I figure it'll take the taliban at least 20 mins to get back up the hill, so now you've given the extraction team a 25 minute window for not bring exact in their timing of extraction. Also the reason I say 25 minutes and not 30 is because you don't want the taliban right on top of you when the extraction team arrives because then your extraction team is going to end up in the same situation they eventually ended up in. That's what I believe they could of done but I've also never been thru something like this so I really don't know that's just an educated guess from the safety of my couch.

Another option could be... they should have kept 1 seal as security to watch the tied up herder and the kid, while the other 3 make there way up to the top to get the comms. If they are in fact able to get the comms and get an ETA of extract, THEN cut them loose. But until they are 100% sure they have a plan to get out of there then you keep them tied up
