The main supplies will still have to be transported in from the southern gate later.

Yes, IS4 and the mini event before it (related to Typhone's intro and banner) are precisely about that, especially IS4 ending 3. We are waiting for more information in the IS4 ending 4 in the upcoming DLC. They must have timed this after the Endfield test for more reveals.

I still confused what the implication of Lone Trail to Enfield's lore since *spoiler alert* The way to access Talos II was through the northern portal. Either Kristen's action influence the warp gate on the north we'll have to see on IS4.
