Hey, Kate. My son (34) lives at home with me. We live in a very expensive area in the U.S. There is no way he can afford to rent or buy in this area. There are many other families that I know who still have adult children living in the home. For me, it provides a feeling of security knowing there is someone here to help me out.

I think it’s actually so sweet how understanding and non judgemental your parents are. You seem like an amazing person and you should give yourself credit for still trying to move forward despite all the internal struggles. I honestly relate to you so much.

Just a shift in perspective for you. I feel behind AF in my life rn for other reasons, but live with my boyfriend. I lost my dad suddenly at the beginning of this year and what I’d do to be able to live with both my parents again, I’d do anything. Although people may think living at home with parents is something we should be ashamed of or whatever, it’s actually also such a privilege to. Not everyone has parents. Or at least both parents.

I lived with my parents in my early 30's but then my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died when I was 32 and then my mum who was my best friend was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer (whom I cared for throughout the horrific disease) and died when I was 34. Without going into great detail, everything was incredibly traumatic, including awful betrayal from other family members. I then put the family home on the market and sold up which was a massive job in itself. I'd never moved away from home. Even when I went to Uni, I had commuted, so this was my first big house move with no support. It was an incredibly traumatic and horrific time but made you realise how much inner strength you have. It's a harsh reality but 'change is the only constant in life.' I think I know what situation you are in because I've 'been there' and it is incredibly anxiety-provoking. Because I was so close with my mum particularly, my worst nightmare was losing my mum, but one day, everyone is 'forced to face' by nature. As you know, everyone has to become independent one day. Whether you do that 'for yourself' whilst you still have your parents support, or are 'forced by nature' (like me) is up to you.

Your dad absolutely nailed the explaination for more people living with their parents at the beginning. - Very few people I know live on their own without some sort of understanding with their landlord (for example, a friend of mine has an OAP landlady who feels more safe with someone else she trusts in the building, and he does odds and sods like shopping for her, and his rent is very cheap in reflection.). The fact of the matter is that things are way, WAY too expensive. I was thinking about the concept of the homemaker the other day, and how it's practically extinct. The life of a homemaker is literally unafforable, now, that to me is a massive body blow to homelife and wellbeing. Two partners who live together both have to be earning to pay all their bills, one partner cannot do it on a reasonable income anymore. One cannot afford to support the other as a homemaker. And you think of the things that a (proper) homemaker does, everything from cooking and cleaning to light maintenence, it's more important than a person thinks, it's a legitimate and extremely important job that has been priced out of life. But then the government keeps pushing for us to be in relationships and build nuclear families? How? Can't buy a home, and if we could, we still can't afford to maintain it on a daily basis. So they want both partners working by default, thus two very stressed individuals crammed together in a house they can't maintain. This is literally a recipe for domestic abuse, and it's scary because it's how even good people can do horrible things if they're under enough pressure. I'm going to look up some videos of puppies now, as I have somewhat saddened myself. Actually, I'm gonna need the big guns for this one; baby red pandas.

Also still living at home at 29 :) full time job with good pay, but its just so insanely expensive to move out We often forget it can be really nice to share a home with your parents. Like, if I would have my own place, I would just sit there completly alone most of the time. Why not stay with my parents for a while, be able to safe some money and enjoy the company :)

It's okay beautiful! Everyone's circumstances are different. I'd trade lives with you in a second. I do own my own house (31 F) but I don't have my mom anymore, or in fact, a relationship. Just a friend or two and my sister. And my dad moved back in with me after my mom died, with no end in sight. Please appreciate both your parents and your boyfriend! They seem amazing. Every time I meet a guy it just never sticks. You have a good one. You're very beautiful and so sweet, lots to offer the world. It's hard to describe how pointless life feels without my mom and the love of my life/kids. Someone really inspiring to me is Steve Wallis on KZbin. He's lost his wife, his mom, and his best friend in two short years. He still gets out there to enjoy and appreciate life and what and who he still has.
