I just don't understand the appeal of line dancing, I really don't.

That's ok, you don't have to, but there's nothing better than music and dance to soothe the soul. Whether it's ball room, jazz, rock and roll, line dancing or freestyle, what ever you dance, they all offer the same thing, a healthy source of fun, laughter and socialism and all that exercise is just a bonus. For some people it's perfect because if you line dance you don't need a partner, so when you're solo you're not sitting on the sidelines watching everyone else having fun!.

In my swing dance community, you never need a partner - we always find one to dance with. You sit out only if you chose to. It is the most welcoming, open group I've ever met. We range in age from late teens to late 70's. This is East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Balboa, Carolina and Collegiate Shag, and Classic West Coast. We've learned that one of the biggest benefits of dancing is human touch.

When line dancing I am limited only by my own abilities. The dances I do range from easy beginner to high intermediate, and are done to ALL kinds of music. When swing dancing, while always enjoyable to dance with any and all, my evening can vary based on number/availability of partners, or dance levels of partners. I can both follow and lead (some), so I am not just sitting there waiting for someone to ask me to dance. "Never need a partner" and "only sit if you choose to" don't apply to everyone or all communities, I'm afraid.

We're very lucky here. We also put on 1x a month dance parties at dancers homes (rotate all year). They're wildly successful, at least 45 folks each time (we keep track). There's one tonight in fact. People bring munchies, liquid refreshments, we provide the music (iPad or DJ) and we go for 4-6 hours. We are a tight group :)
