I was 15 years old when Lonesome Dove aired on TV. It had a huge impact on me, and it taught me a great deal. That final scene between Gus and Woodrow was absolutely devastating. Made me cry a little. I'm 47 now but that scene still makes me tear up. Robert Duvall's performance was brilliant, but he was robbed of the Emmy award for it.

42 here. We bought a VCR so my dad could record it when it aired on TV. We wore out those recordings. And 2 sets of VHS tapes. And at least one DVD set. When I got the bluray that has been remastered, it was like watching it again for the first time, and because Simon Wincer is a genius sent by God, it was shot in widescreen. Get the BluRay if you don't already have it. Duvall has said publicly that it was his best and favorite role. I don't think a character in any medium has ever been executed with such perfection.

I bought a copy of this movie when it was on VHS (a long time ago!!) It was Christmas Season and I wanted something for me, my husband, and kids to enjoy. I hadn't seen it yet, and the selling point was the young clerk at Tower Records, in Mohawk and punk piercings who said he and his mom watch it together every year. He was a respectful, sweet guy who I never would have guessed to be nostalgic about a movie, much less watching it with his mom. We watched it as a family and loved it. Not a dry eye in the house when Gus and Woodrow take their leave. My children are now all in their 30s and we still quote lines now and then. The Old West was a dangerous, colorful time. The book and it's sequel are great reads.

@@historymore442 -- We have enjoyed this movie from many perspectives: -- As a story of the Old West. -- As a reminder that tragedy in MANY forms happened every day back then (we take our recovery from accidents and illnesses for granted) -- As a reminder that life was HARD in those days. -- That there are people in our American past who did the best they could to make a good living: the Cowboys and Cattlemen (my paternal grandfather raised cattle & horses) --- Only the Strongest survived! That same grandfather complained of 'a little stomach trouble' which turned out to be a ruptured appendix. He survived the operation and recovered to live to be 74 or 75. The line that gripped me, and the characters in the story, was " Well hell boys, I 'd sooner be hung by my friends than a bunch of damned strangers" Yes, he did indeed "die fine". so sad he couldn't have lived better. As aggravating as Jake could be, Gus was still his friend, "Jake liked to drink, and he didn't like to work. I always liked the scene where Gus took the time to say good-bye to Xavier, knowing he was feeling down about losing Lori to Jake Spoon. It was just one of those scenes that defined Gus as a "good guy" to the audience. The line at the end of the scene is worth including..."Goodbye, my fine friend." "Goodbye to you, my good friend." The importance of the scene was shown at the very end, when Call asks what happened to the saloon, and the reporter tells him the owner burned it down with him inside...because he never got over losing Lori.

Really couldn’t agree more with you! Such a powerful scene for all the reasons you just mentioned. I would also like to add that to me it was almost like Gus knew he wasn’t coming back to Lonesome Dove. There was a little foreshadowing throughout the movie that he wasn’t coming back.

I'm 40 years old this series used to come on once every few years. My parents demanded we watched it. It was only after I was older that I watched it and realized it was a masterpiece.. I also like how the film subtly gives hints about Gus and Woodrow being tough ex Texas Rangers and proves so again and again throughout the movie.. 👍👍👍👍

One reason why the series was so good was the casting. Both were perfect for their roles and both turned in Emmy level performances.

Had to watch this one again. All of these are great lines from this movie. One that my brother and I tossed around from time to time is from when Gus told Newt that Woodrow is his father. Then he said...... I don't know what you can do with the information, but there is.

Duval in general is one the finest American actors of any generation, not flashy or over the top performances, but solid work time after time. Hes been overlooked because of that in my opinion. If Lonesome Dove was a film ; that was an Oscar performance all day long. For me it's between Lonesome Dove and Unforgiven ; they're both immaculate.

My old Mum watched this saga when it was first aired way back. She liked it so much she bought the Dvd when it eventually came out. I watched the Dvd and then read the book. Probably the wrong order but one of the best parts in the book, for me, was when they came across a Montana grizzly which took exception to the presence of the herd leader, the Texas Bull. I remember Woodrow Call's words when he first realized what this enormous critter was 'My Lord. It's a grizzly' ! ....... And Larry McMurtry's words "the horses were turning and running as if they meant to run back to Texas"! And when Gus realizes the Texas Bull is squaring off to the grizzly he says "you don't think that little bull is fool enough to charge that bear, do you"? ........ "that bear will turn him wrong side out"! Unforgettable book.

Another good line from Gus, “‘It ain’t dying I’m talking about, it’s living,’ Augustus said. ‘I doubt it matters where you die, but it matters where you live.‘” I also like how he tells Woodrow that while he would not kill him, he "would darn sure shoot him safe"
