Yes! The dinner scene quote "Do we have to wait till the argument is over? We'll starve if we wait for that..." sums up Gus and Call's relationship perfectly.

Robert Duvall was stupendous in this role. So was Tommy Lee Jones. This was the best western I’ve ever watched, and the book which won a Pulitzer, is worth a read.

Here's something interesting, Robert Duvall has spoken about his own "trilogy" of western stuff he was in. The 1st was Lonesome Dove, the second was Open Range in which he starred in with Keven Costner, who also produced and directed. The Third of Duvall's trilogy was another television western called Broken Trail (2006), another excellent and probably now underrated western not to be missed.

I give the novel "Lonesome Dove" the highest possible recommendation to you. This thing actually won a Pulitzer Prize for Literature; it's the Holy Grail of Western novels, I think. The miniseries does a splendid job of adapting it, and the novel is even more fun because you get McMurtry's superb prose. It's an unforgettable journey, Madison - have fun!

It's a great read, but personally I found James A Michener's 'Centennial' more satisfying for its grand historical scope, just saying. Not as well adapted to the screen though.

@@lifelover515 The historical scope of Michener's books made his work extremely difficult to adapt to screen. That's why they could only use a single chapter from "Hawaii" to make that movie. 😆

You inspired me. I had to stop about ten minutes in, go dig out my blu-ray, and watch the whole thing through again. I'm an old man now: grew up on a farm, and I spent most of my day saddled with memories and swaddled with emotions that nearly overcame me with their beauty and pathos. I live alone, and this was the best day I've had in many years. I owe you for that; thank you for sharing this with us... I'll get back to enjoying your reaction as soon as I have sufficiently recovered my composure, and sufficiently assimilated the beauty and power of today's experience. Again, thank you for providing the spark, the impetus. I pray that you will reap at least some part of the blessing I received from this series.

My Dad had two Australian Shepherds he named Augustus McRae and Woodrow Call. They were brothers, literally and figuratively. The little goofballs loved each other, and they had a blast seeing what mischief they could get into. We lost Gus in November 2015, and we had to put Call to sleep in 2019 after he was paralyzed from a stroke. Call was in his nineties in human years when we lost him. Dad and I both miss those little hellraisers.

To leave the county of jurisdiction, one would need to be a Texas Ranger or US Marshall. Water moccasins (cottonmouths) get flushed out due to the flash flood since they will den up in holes along the river bank.

I read the novel "Lonesome Dove" first. Some time after that, I saw the TV series. It is very faithful to the book, and it's very good. The book, not surprisingly, is even better. It may be the best western novel ever written. But it is so sad that it breaks your heart. These were people with both strengths and weaknesses, good points and bad points, who, like most people, just could not escape out of their habitual patterns, and their patterns led them eventually to their doom. It's crazy how people do that, but it's what almost everybody does. All Larry McMurty's characters are like that. His middle name should be "Tragedy". Anyway, this is a tremendously good western series, and some great acting too...specially Robert Duvall. He's unforgettable. So is Gus McCrae in the book.

I live in Oklahoma down the road a ways from Ft Smith. I’ve always loved driving in from the West and crossing the Arkansas River looking up at the main drive and the church on the hill. It’s a pretty little city.

Absolute King of Westerns. Both the novel and the movie. Everything is there: love, hate, bandits, lawmen, lawmen gone bad, strong women, strong men, Indians and cowboys, drama and humor, cows, bears, horses, snakes and rabbits, Mexicans, Irishmen, Germans and Tennesseans, outlaws gone mellow, hunting, gambling, killing, living, dreaming, cowpunching, stampeding, dying, hurting, kidnapping, healing, sporting, longing, winning and losing, chaps, bandanas, dresses, suits and all forms of hats. All western boils down to this. The movie has only two weaknesses: it doesn't contain everything from the book so had to make some minor changes, and one poor special effect. If i had only one movie to watch for the remainder of my life- it's this one. So happy to see you get there

I had slight regrets watching this first and then discovering "Dead Man's Walk" - set in the early 1840s "Comanche Moon" - set in the 1850-60s "Lonesome Dove" - set in mid-to-late 1870s "Streets of Laredo" - set in the early 1890s. I've since binge watched them several times, different actors portraying the characters but each so good you don't notice.

Lorena is a survivor not a player. She does what she does because that is what has to be done to survive. It's a habit by this time. This character illustrates the deplorable prospects for women in the past. If a woman was widowed or stranded somewhere her opportunities were nil and many found themselves turning to prostitution just to survive. - Great that you're doing this series.

That is absolutely right. She's doing what has to be done, simply to survive. That's what it was like for an unattached woman in those times out west...if she had no family around to watch out for her. If you did have a strong and supportive family, then you had some protection, and they'd help you find a good husband (hopefully). If not, well, things were going to be very, very tough!

Larry McMurtry first wrote a screenplay in 1972 with the help of Peter Bogdanovich (The director of another McMurtry story turned film "The Last Picture Show") called "The Streets Of Laredo". If that script had been made into a movie John Wayne and James Stewart would have portrayed Woodrow Call and Augustus 'Gus' McCrae and Henry Fonda Jake Spoon. To our eternal loss that project never came to fruition, but when one door closes another opens. McMurtry turned that script treatment into a novel that spawned the epic mini-series, that's pretty, pretty good in it's own right.

You're the first person I've seen do a reaction to this, so glad because I've always loved this two miniseries and both television series and the prequels. That last scene brings back memories. I got bit by a water moccasin AKA cottonmouth years ago near Robber's Cave when I spent a week there teaching rock climbing. Luckily the fangs hit my shin bone so it didn't get much venom in me. I didn't get very sick from it but the two fang marks festered for almost two years before they finally healed over completely. I can't imagine getting multiple bites like Sean crossing the river.

Charlie Goodnight's partner was Oliver Loving. Larry McMurtry originally wrote this as an original screenplay for a movie starring John Wayne as Gus, Jimmy Stewart as Call, and Henry Fonda as Jake

One of my favorite movie series of all time! Like a good, long, well-written novel, you get attached to the characters, loving some, disliking some, but all come to feel like you know 'em. Return to Lonesome Dove is alright, and the prequel, Comanche Moon, is great!

Something to consider: These people left Europe to make a new life elsewhere (America, Australia, or other places) and the difficulty of travel meant they would likely never come back, even just for a visit. And because most of these people were not literate, they would likely never be heard from again. They had scribes who would write down what you wanted to say or read a letter for you, but these services were expensive.

You should check out Robert Duvall in "Tender Mercies" where he won Best Actor. The movie was nominated for Best Picture. He plays a broken down country singer (outlaw like Willie) and it is just a fantastic movie.

Fantastic video, Madison. Nobody ever reacted to _Lonesome Dove_ . Duvall and Jones knew their way around horses better than any leading men then or now. In fact, Duvall criticized Clint Eastwood for playing a character who'd forgotten how to mount his horse in _Unforgiven_ . Jones didn't break out as a movie star until _The Fugitive_ in 1993 but was every bit Duvall's equal in this mini-series. As an author, particularly a western author, you should read as much Larry McMurtry as you can. He wrote three prequels to _Lonesome Dove_ -- _Streets of Laredo, Dead Man's Walk_ and _Comanche Moon_ - which are excellent western yarns that allow the reader to hang out with Gus and Woodrow in their youth.

My father in law went to High School with Larry McMurtry, said he was a nerd back then. McMurtry also wrote a book (That became a movie) the Last Picture Show about life in Archer City Texas

When I was a kid, we used to have what we called 'Indian' fights. We would throw our knives into the ground between the feet of our adversary. Wherever the knife stuck, we had to move our left foot in to meet it. Then we'd go again. The space got more and more small. Edit: While we were doing this 'normal' thing , I noticed a psychopath watching us and really enjoying the process we were working through.

Read the book years ago, only seen bits of the miniseries, so thanks heaps for bringing this sprawling narrative back to me. Great characterisations and atmosphere, though westerns are not usually my bag, especially the shoot 'em up variety. Fortunately they don't make 'em like they used to. You're so good at analysing character dynamics. Perfect cast, esp. Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall. Larry McMurtry seems to have a habit of killing off random characters just as they start to get interesting, but it keeps you guessing. Rock on, Madison.

I love Lonesome Dove, but this is just the start. The Saga continues with 4 other mini series made after Lonesome Dove. The way to watch them would be in time line order which is 1- Dead Mans Walk 1996 2- Comanche Moon 2008 3- Lonesome Dove 1989 4- Return to Lonesome Dove 1993 5 Streets Of Laredo 1995 ( Streets of Laredo also serves as follow up to Lonesome Dove because the story ignores the events of Return to Lonesome Dove). some of these are better then others but expand on the characters and still great to watch. enjoy the adventure, so glad you react to westerns. Not enough reactors do

You are in for an epic treat, and you should know they did an absolute superb sequel to this as well called The Return To Lonesome Dove. It wasn't the true sequel to Larry McMurtry's book but should have been. The true sequel was Streets Of Laredo in which they also made for television also. I was but by a huge rattlesnake when I was a kid. Fortunately it bit me and it didn't even hurt. Mainly because I was bit in my prosthetic leg. I even got a signed copy of a Far Side cartoon for it. If real life imitates the art of Gary Larson, that is really scary.
