Long Canyon Moab: Another scenic route from Moab to Canyonlands

I tried to do it in November on my electric bike. I wanted to get at least up to the arch but only made it about half way up the second switchback before my battery and my 75 year old legs gave out. Still was an incredible ride and still on my bucket list. Love the video!

Check the weather before you go. Flash Flood Area. Great Video. I spent 5 nights in that canyon. It's so quiet you can hear the wind beneath the bird wings. So so clear at night that it seems the stars are between your eyes and your hand.

I've explored those areas, but It was back in 1973 & 74. It was much more difficult in thoses days. With the LaSal mountains, snowpack and a full moon reflected light we could explore the hottest desert terrain all night long. But, In the extreme heat of the hot summertime, we would beat the daytime heat at 10.000 feet, well, until the Fall's harvest full moon. We loved to camp up in the Manti-La Sal National Forest that's in the video's background. Those LaSal Mt. are Utah’s, And to me look just like I Envisioned the Swiss Apps. We would witness the springtime in Canyon Lands once, then about 4 more times or about every thousand feet or so, as we ventured up in the mountains as the snow pack slowly melted. In the late fall, we had to retreat back to the canyon Lands & Arches Park. And no fee to enter, no time limit to leave. Hindsight is 20/20.

I began watching this video and about five minutes in I realized that my wife and I, along with our son and nephew drove this in a rental car about 15 years ago. It was definitely a pucker, although we didn’t know the name at the time. We also had NO experience on backcountry western roads. Wonderful adventure!

It was easy access form the top as well. An easy side trip from Dead Horse Point for just about any vehicle that can drive a graded dirt road.

Just was in Moab a week ago. The last trail I took was Long Canyon. The spot where the bolder is over the trail was almost a 2 foot washout on the way up. Decided to back down and turn around considering it was 8 PM and i was solo on the trail. Didn't want to chance getting high centered so late in the day. Beautiful trail with so many cool views though.

I totally missed it. I'm still not sure where it's on the map, have to check it out. I did the long dirt road that drops down by the Colorado and Green rivers. I'm not sure where this is in relation to that. From the video description, it seems this is outside Canyonlands NP? I'll have to check the map.

One of my favorite trails. Going from bottom up offers amazing views. If you go up Shafer, you can take this back down. They say keep your dog on a leash- not so much because of the Sheep but because of Mountain Lions. They predate on sheep. I see their big paw prints (fresh prints) all the time in Long Canyon- especially down the box canyon to the right and near water sources. You probably won't ever see them- but they see you. Be careful not to hike here at night. The area just before the big rock you drive under 6:06 has a huge rut and it's loose rock. Even in a built $70k Jeep I had to get out and put rocks under the one tire for traction. Moab has many off-camber inclines that you have to watch out for. The trails will let you in but they will not always let you back out. It's easy to get in trouble or stuck. This trail is not particularly difficult. I did it in a FWD SUV with some snow on the ground. One of the more mild trails in the area but still very scenic. Rental cars from the major franchises cannot go off-road. They track via GPS and the fines are steep. No, a good car wash will not wash away your sins. If you return it damaged, it will be very costly. Out of Use Fees. Rent a TWISTED JEEP- drive this, Shafer Trail and Chicken Corners. Rent a UTV to take on HELL'S REVENGE.

My wife & I did this drive a couple of years ago in our Ram 1500 but turned around at the rock tunnel. Could've probably made it through but I didn't have a lot of confidence in my tires at the time. Nice to see what was up top. Thanks for posting.

Glad you posted this as this was going to be one more thing to see after I get past the White Rim Rd, maybe next year. I am glad you indicated a photo taking point as I didn't know about that, one more place to take pictures from of which, that was a good pic looking down the canyon towards the La Sal's. Pucker pass was bladed two years ago, and it's remained fairly smooth since. But in 2015 and 2016, it was REAL nasty. Like "roll your atv and bash up your Jeep" kind of nasty. I sat there one day contemplating how I was going to get my atv up, and watched four, modded Jeeps take over 30 minutes to crawl down it. Two suffered some damage. It's always fun to sit in the section between the slot and the boulder over the road and watch the driver's faces of the passenger cars as they see what they're in for!

My family and I came down this on December 28th 2020. There was about 3” of snow and let me tell you pucker pass was definitely in the works that day! Great video, I wish I would have watched this first. Once you start from the top done there seems to be no return.

We did this road in a rental Hyundai Tuscon, mostly by accident as Google Maps told us to go this route to get to Dead Horse Point from where we were - Checking out Wall St rock climbing area. Until that point I didn't think much of our rental, but the Tuscon did fairly well... only started slipping backwards once, that was just past the boulder underpass (and we'd gone too far to turn back), but turned on the elctronic diff-lock button and then it climbed the rest of the way pretty well. Also discovered another climbing area half way up which was cool to know. Very cool place!

That's awesome. Yeah, I think the key going uphill is 4WD. It's really bumpy and going uphill that makes it feel much harder than it is. But clearance is surprisingly good for anything better than a passenger car.

my first car was diesel fiesta, gen before the one what in the trail, that sure seen a bit off road back in the uk on forest tracks, and very slippy tracks on side of a mountain, lots fun, pick your lines correct just enough speed but not to much as points you three wheels you need a little speed to get the drive tires both back on ground or you going no where. even some road closed detours one i never forget i was worse than most this track and so dusty and holes so deep three wheels at times and big vans and small goods trucks were on it and they looked stressed and spoke to local before going that way they said a bit bumpy but it not bad, mos crazy public main road id been on, rest i decided to go like in to the woods, climbing a very narrow track less than half foot to play with and that small fiesta, so slippy i need to get out clear a fallen log blocking the track hand brake not work to slippy on side mountain, put it in gear and hand brake on engine of and fingers crossed it not pop out gear it did not but no way backing down so had to continue to a split y in the road very slippy and big drop and 3 point turn, that my first week driving, manual too. been lots tracks and hills and forest some times even in the snow. now i got an Hyundai i20 1.2 petrol manual every now and again that adventures off road but with heavy diesel on top front wheels a tad more speed is required but never really felt i did not have enough grip all places ive taken my small city cars i got to where ive wanted to get to, bad health so i like to drive as close to place i plan to take some pictures and times its off road, my city car prob done more off road than 99% rangerovers i see in the city. pick your line correct read road well you be amazed where you can take a city car, mines only 1.1 ton with tank fuel so it also light weight too. so far never damaged any my cars, reading the road well and do not rush plan your lines ive got to places no city car has prob been in uk. i enjoy the challenge and find it more fun in a car what not for off road, just got to know your car well like ride height as example so you know the lines you need to take, even tho its a small light weight city car it dose bit of road but also played with much faster cars on windy country roads even out paced them, and top speed of 120 mph what more than plenty in light weight city car with stock soft suspension. my car treat it a bit of a multi tool dose bit everything from off road, and bit race with cars 3x the power, to normal driving . light weight adds fun, only thing i don't do is cross any water over 1/2 foot deep even tho i know it can do more anything else why not

Rented Jeeps and drove -Long Canyon- (Oops, it was Lockhart Canyon) in the 90's. Awesome trip. My wife behind the wheel was awesome! She, at 5' and all of 90 pounds, always surprised and impressed people. As a commercial multi-passenger driver, when she jumped out and chained up and hit the Tahoe ski resorts, she showed her clients how it was done! And when she got behind the wheel in the Jeep, she was equally adept. Years mountain biking made four wheeling easy by comparison!

Thanks for the video! Could you give some coordinates or location details on where that cliff hike is at the end? I don't have a 4WD Truck so was interested in getting to it from that dirt road you talked about on the way to Deadhorse Point. I see something on Google Maps but it looks like the road splits and forks in various places and am not sure which fork I would take.

The trail out along the cliff top is 38.54139884914097, -109.70774984028797. It's very easy to get out there in any vehicle if the road is dry, and literally just minutes from the Dead Horse Point road.

I'm aware of not being able to fly in NPS and wilderness areas but I'm always wondering about State Parks and other public areas. Utah seems to do it's parks on a case by case basis or have different rules. And if there is a doubt just err on the side of not flying.

I have rented a jeep wrangler (no modificatons) and intend to do it next week. Any tips on doing this for the first time would really help. Also if you discourage this one, I will only do the shafer trail, but would still appreciate the tios. Cheers JV

Fairly easy to find once you reach the upper end of the canyon.

Yeah, I think it get's a lot of traffic from rock climbers that start at the bottom of those cliffs if they want to drop lines down off the top. And the road "zig-zags" right at the point that goes out there so you'll know where it's at. It's just a matter of walking out along the mostly rocky mesa top out as far as you want to go.

We are going to put on a set of BFG KO2 in April: standard size 265/70/R17. We drag a travel trailer everywhere so I want to keep the tires standard size to handle every day use on the highways. Safe Travels!

Yeah, it's pretty wide, but you're going to be limited in your maneuverability. You won't be able to pick a line, just aim the truck through and slowly crawl forward. But the rocks aren't too bad, any truck big enough for dual tires is going to have plenty of ground clearance.

How do you think a Subaru Outback would handle this?

The only challenge is going up, and only through the part where the fallen rock covers the trail. I think it can be done with an adventurous driver and carefully picking a path to keep all 4 wheels on the ground. If you wanted to play it safe it's only the last 1/4 mile that is steep and bumpy, you can go up to some great overlooks before then and just head back down if the rocky bits look a little too gnarly.

@@jfkdotcom I've been camping in Moab since I was an infant in the early 80's I've seen every tourist surge since. The new internet crowds aren't new, it was the same in the 90's when everybody was pissed off that there were commercials about Moab. Some people will always just complain about a situation. Others will try to find a way to best adapt to a situation. If you think people will stop coming to Moab if we stop talking about it you're ignorant to the situation. But what we can do is get people to stop crowding one or two places with hundreds of people per day and spread out to all the equally good places so the land can support our burden.
