San Diego Skateboard Longboard Race Club video of one of our Custom Longboard Distance Pushing Skateboards which has Pump performance with a little speed, and also works well for Carving and brake checks on most hills. This is another Demo model we allow members to ride at events. We offer free advice and DIY videos to members. Also available to members for a low fee or barter trade of skate parts, are modification services to people who prefer not to do it. The Demo board is also a sample of identical or similar decks that we offer to members for a donation to the Club. Free to join club, by going to club meetup website in San Diego.

I learn a lot from your videos. I started learning about and how to longboard from videos on KZbin several months ago. I've had two situations where I was launched off the board onto my shoulder and chest. Both times, I stopped practice to heal the soreness and bruising. I'm healed, a little apprehensive, but I feel I'm ready to restart. Being 73, I'm going to be extra careful. I'm considering those two falls, good lessons. I've been a Snowboarder for many years, this is my first time ever on Skateboard or Longboard.

i'm sure it's wonderful for your sense of balance though. Often balance deteriorates with age as we move less, and by moving more you'll be able to better preserve it. You'll also feel extra cool when you fly past a 40+ year old who is too unfit to skate.

In response to your question about the skateboard I started on, that would be the "Ripstick". Approximately 6 years ago, it all evolved on me picking up a Ripstick at the swap meet, as I watched a a kid ride one, which sparked my interest. From their I struggled with a top mount deck, then shortly thereafter a double drop hooked me into skateboarding since I felt comfortable being lower to the ground. Next was a drop-thru deck which is where I experienced the most improvement on my skill set. From there it was drop-down as that prepared me for a top mount. However for Freeride I eventually went with a micro drop top mount. And now the double drop is for LDP racing and or flat path distance cruising. And my favorite all purpose deck is the drop thru, since the ride height with my set-up works for LDP training, yet I'm also able to Freeride on it, down most any hills.... With the added ability to go up most driveway edges as well.

Cyro-Nydd Cool cool! Yeah putting Pump into a drop thru is a little challenging with wheel clearance but it can be done. The double drop makes things even a little dicier, so my best pump set ups were on a single drop thru deck. I have some others clips on my channel with details on trucks and wheels but here’s some quick tips: Get yourself some side set wheels as the extra clearance will help a lot in getting the most out of your set up. I like 76mm wheels with at least a 50mm contact patch. Heavier wheels seem to work best. A must for the best pump is a Vector Bennet 6.0 front with Riptide bushings and a 42 mm Randel 2 in the back for stability set up again with Riptide bushings. Keep on rolling and one day I’m gonna mess with some G-Bomb truck brackets with Don’t Trip Poppy trucks....

That info you gave is GOLDEN!!! I made a bit of breakthrough in technique, but i think if i use your set up it should be less strenuous to pump...right now i am using hardware i have lying around, now i am totally thinking about buying trucks strictly devoted to ldp (your bennet/randal combo...sorry i cant justify buying $150+ single truck at the moment)...
@michellandegent5957

Christopher Williams Right on... Glad that anything I share could be useful to you Bro... when you do get some extra funds I’d hit up Sk8kings for a 6.0 Vector Bennet and they’d also sell these as a single and then purchase the Randal 150mm with 42 degree base plate and they’ll sell you a single of those as well. Then of course Bushings from Riptide Sports will complete what you need. I think you can do it all for about a 100 bucks, however getting the right bushings from the get go is a must to keep costs low. But seriously I’ve put some great pump set ups together with random bushings that had a soft Duro, but it’s key that the trucks are decent. Even Paris V1 will work fine with the right bushings, and you can also wedge most trucks up front to make the hanger steeper to make the truck a little livelier. Another little trick is picking up a drop thru deck with a moderate concave and you’ll be able to pump the deck edges harder without using as much body English compared to a deck with less concave Concave being the dip from one edge to the other. Less dip is a milder concave). Keep on rolling Good Times... thanks again for the shout out!

Whats up bro! Learning the longboard push technique myself, i have skated alot when young but never knew that you could generate that much forward momentum just by pump carving...anywho...i started out on a homemade oak board (reclaimed stair step) was carving hard and cracked the board...heel side power push or just too many Twinkies...i had gullwing sidewinders on that oak board..after it cracked, i got a great deal on a drop down board with paris trucks and grease ball abec 5 bearings...and it feels waaaay to low! I liked the paris trucks but figured if i went with gullwings i would get a little bit more height...i mainly want to learn how to pump, what would you suggest the sidewinders or the paris trucks? Any info would be greatly appreciated
@michellandegent5957
@michellandegent5957 5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Williams I have a few sets of side winders, both the 9 and 10 inch and they are a fussy truck to dial in, as the right deck match for flow is limited. With the right bushing set up/ with deck and wheels, then my choice would be Paris trucks! However my favorite set up for pump with the ability to still have some stability down hill would be to run a Vector Bennet 6.0 up front with a Randel 150mm in back. Proper Bushings by Riptide will make your sled pop some good pump. For info on what bushings and Durometer I would suggest then I need some stats like your weight, height, and details of deck like wheel base ( measurement from inside deck truck holes and picture of concave and width, etc...

@@michellandegent5957 You are right...the sidewinders are fun, but have too many variables to dial in...i think i got a decent set up now...just used paris trucks with 36inch bamboo board...i am getting better pumps out that set up... one quick question: do you use a more narrow truck in rear? I have been reading that rear, tight trucks in back and looser wide trucks in front works dor ldp?
@michellandegent5957
@michellandegent5957 5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Williams Tight rear trucks referring to using a somewhat harder Duro helps with stability and definitely looser trucks up front. I would definitely suggest Riptide Sports bushings as they are the BOMB for setting your trucks up to perform better. On the 42 degree Randal I use on the rear, my Bushing of choice is a Chubby from Riptide which has a bigger flat surface area and these can be used on your Paris trucks. I’m 200 pounds and the Chubby is a 87 Duro, but the large flat surface helps stability. Brad from Riptide is very good at helping anyone with questions also. With The Bennet Vector truck up front I use a tall 85 aps Duro with a regular size 90 aps for a lot of action up front. I’m not a fan of skinnier truck in back as it feels wonky to me and that’s because my setups need to feel normal when I want to push out some brake checks down the hills I roll. Be sure to always check for wheel bite when changing bushings. Collapse the edge of the deck as far as possible to make sure the wheel isn’t going to tag the deck on a hard carve. Obviously do this not in motion and one side at a time. Hope that helps some.

@michellandegent5957
@michellandegent5957 8 жыл бұрын
Wow? Where to begin with a set-up for Distance/ Speed/ and Tricks... If you go to my Channel, I have a variety of information addressing distance pushing and speed. But on the Tricks thing, I'm going to guess your probably talking about Shuv-its or Olly-ing or Dancing on Decks. Best answer I can give you is you need a double kick tail deck, with wheel-base at about 30". Wheel-base is the measurement between the inside holes of both trucks. Speed is relative to wheel size, however your board wheel wells can restrict how big of wheels you can use. Since wheel-bite is going to be a major concern (when you carve and the wheel tags the deck, and stops the wheel from rotating). Then you also have Urethane which can be responsive or not, depending on what type of wheels. Then you have height of deck, for doing distance pushing. Lower deck is better, so using a double drop deck is usually a good choice. Then on Carving it depends on wheel-base/ trucks/ bushings/ etc... So in actuality you are asking a question similar to walking on a car lot and asking for the impossible.... Every car has strong points and weak ones, you just have to decide your priorities... Sorry man, but I haven't even begun to explain all the options, and in this form of communication, I could write a book trying to explain it all to you. So if your in San Diego CA. then just look me up thru the club; San Diego Skateboard Longboard Race Club. And I can help you Thanks for checking in...

I haven't really tried running shoes when longboarding, I've always went for skate shoes. How do you feel about them? Are they better/worse than flat bottom shoes?
@michellandegent5957
@michellandegent5957 5 жыл бұрын
Stefan Bt Not sure what your referring to for flat bottom shoes, but many skate shoes have a continuous tight pattern of tread without an area of gap in the middle, so I’m thinking this is what your referring to. And just like Skate shoes there are running shoes with a near identical sole pattern, however they have the addition of jell in the heel. And event though some jell is infused in the shoe, it still feels flat when you wear them. The jell is great for old guys like me, with a history of pushing my body with sports. Besides the extra absorption of impact in the heel, I do need a tight grip pattern on the sole and also the shoe should have a uniform design on its inside and outside edges, so when I hang my feet on either toe or heel side then my feet are comfortable and maneuvering feels straight forward. I’m picky on shoes, and would say that I pick a running shoe that has the simplicity of a Skate shoe.
@Solus147
@Solus147 5 жыл бұрын
Very informative, thanks! Yes I was talking about skate shoes like Vans and Converse which have a flat bottom, without any heel and arch support.They say they're better for "feeling" the board because of the larger sole, but I guess when longboarding and not doing any tricks like with normal skateboards, it doesn't really matter. I've noticed that sometimes my ankle gets a bit sore after an hour of longboarding with flat shoes, mostly my right foot that I use for pushing. I'll give running shoes a try and see if they're more comfortable for riding. It's good to be picky on shoes.
@michellandegent5957
@michellandegent5957 5 жыл бұрын
Stefan Bt Yuppp I get what they say, but when I freeride hills the walk to the top isn’t quick and when I kick 15 miles or more I would have sore tendons with the limited support in Van’s shoes. Another area where support works to my benefit is at Skate Parks on my fails when I’m high stepping trying to not implode on the Crete. But like I responded earlier I’m an older dude, and weak sole shoes are a greater risk for injury to me. The young bucks can get away with a lot more, and at some point they might choose support when their feet hurt as i did.

What wheels would you recommend for pushing.
@michellandegent5957
@michellandegent5957 4 жыл бұрын
goreyboggs For pushing distance I’d use nothing less than a 76 mm wheel and I prefer 78a Duro since that absorbs the road better and rolls over junk easier. But you have to factor in type of board because if it’s only a drop thru deck then 76mm is about as tall as you want since the height puts a strain on the muscles and joints for distance. And If your using a top mount deck/ trucks underneath then 70mm is best. However I like the 85mm Seismic Speed Vents with defcon formula because I like to brake check to slow down, yet the BLACK OPS formula is a tad faster. The 85mm is best on a double drop deck. Seismic makes Black Ops formula wheels in smaller sizes. Another good formula for smaller wheels like 76mm is Abec 11 with Reflex formula. You can go harder Duro’s but the ride will be more chattery/ rough. I like pure maple decks with double drops with a 9 ply for strength since I can hog out wheel wells to prevent wheel bite/ when a wheel sticks the deck when carving a turn. Hope that helps some

+TheDeltaFoxtrotZulu ; My first board was actually not a board, as it was a Ripstick. Only 2 wheels on a cantaliver system. If you want to seee images just goggle it. But maybe more important is what board did I progress most on? This was a drop-thru deck. Most important dimension would be wheel-base, measured from the inside holes of deck for truck mounting/ 30.50". Deck was 10" wide with length being inconsequential (Not important) since wheel-base is what matters. However I'm thinking it was like 42". Get some decent trucks like Paris V2 and be sure to upgrade bushings since stock sucks. Concave of deck should be mellow, which will make it easier to move your feet around while learning.

Bummer on bailing as I can relate, with a few smack downs myself including a stupid one from broken clear glass at a skatepark during a wheel stop episode into flying sideways superman from a 10' roll in transition. I share that because I should of known better than to trust the surfaces without doing a visual check. And its the same with the streets, since being aware of road conditions can greatly reduce mishaps. Not saying that was the caus in your case, but something we can all be reminded about. If you can bare with a few tips, read on... I sense your a beginner and always check there are no Little Rock's as you just push off from a dead start. The Little Rock bugger will stop you on a dime and throw you on your butt i a heartbeat. This is also true when you've almost stopped, since a little tiny rock that dead stops you at the end of a roll, will throw your chin up and the body will follow it....
@michellandegent5957
@michellandegent5957 7 жыл бұрын
I've seen so many people land on their butt, from the start or slow finish of a roll that I had to throw it out there, even if your totally aware of it. And another issue I have is seeing asphalt with a different hue of black which in my mind can mean gasoline (super icy). As you progress you'll spend more time looking ahead to see problems on the rolling surface; sand/ gravel/ rocks/ holes/ a Zip tie on edge/ bush Barrie's/ etc, so try and pick your lines ahead of time. Another important factor is wheels, since bigger means it'll roll over rocks easier, but make sure wheels don't give you wheel bite (upon leaning on deck edge, wheel tags the deck which when rolling in motion can dead stop the wheels. Not sure if any of that helps you personally, but maybe someone could use the hints. As I finish, there is one more big thing to practice which seems obvious, but learning to step off board either way, is a must in helping to stay off the ground, I especially had to learn this when I began practicing switch/ goofy/ mongol foot stance ( foot stance opposite of a regular board stance). Thanks for your comment, and hope you keep having fun as you learn and enjoy rolling!

Dan Velez Landyachtz still makes a 9 ply deck that’s fairly stout, and they have a drop deck with 2” of drop, which is the Switch 40. With your weight being 260, I would make the effort to contact them and share your discipline and weight, and ask for a recommendation. Bustin is another company that use to make 9 ply decks, but now they have some composite creations that might suit you, so just holler at them and confirm what they suggest by reading some reviews on their recommendations. For trucks I would definitely choose Paris trucks, but you have to upgrade the bushings, since those trucks usually come with soft Duro s, however they turn great and are fairly stable with some bushing upgrades. For me Riptide bushings is the way to go. The owner Brad will definitely help you, if you ask... As for wheels, I personally like Seismic, and the Defcom formula is great for speed, yet it still can drift well for sliding. If your gonna slide a lot, then Stick with 70mm. 76mm works great for pushing distance, and if you don’t have a wheel bite problem with big wheels, then go for the 85mm for cruising distance. Hope that helps ya some...

Akin Jakin The trucks on this deck are just some Gull Wing Charger 2’s but its the bushings from Riptide that were chosen for my weight/ ability/ and set-up which is the most important factor for Stability with carving ability. However its important to make sure that your deck can accommodate clearance (When the bushings are too soft the trucks will pivot and the wheels will connect to the deck which can result in abrupt stop/ wheel-bite) for your bushing choices. Riptide makes the most awesome Bushings and they have different compounds for various set-ups and different shapes which can also greatly affect performance. Brad at Riptide sports is really cool/ good about offering assistance to your specific set-up. Hope that helps and thanks for noticing the clip we put out.

The industry has taken a hit with sales and the availability of 9 ply longboards is limited with the exception of some high dollar purchases like Kebbek or Madrid.
