Great explanation, thank you. I grew up with the 'old' style, after helping my son and showing him the way I was taught his teacher got quite upset and told the whole class to do the box method only. Like you said in the beginning, do whatever seems easier and River took to doing to the old way better. With this video I was able to use it to help him understand the Box method and he figured it out in one night. (So did I ha!)

That's fine in the beginning, but, eventually, the students should all move to the standard algorithm. Otherwise, math will become tedious because the calculation will take forever.

I just wanted to thank you for this video. My son came home with an F on his most recent assessment in long division. The only way I knew how to teach him was the standard algorithm which he wasn't understanding. He watched your video and followed along with the problems and it "clicked". You seem like a fantastic teacher. Thanks again!

Hi do u have a demo using 2 digit numbers using box method?
@brianquick33247 жыл бұрын
Not a video, but it would be the same way, you would just have a 0 above the first column because obviously a two-digit number won't "go into" a one-digit number. You'd just move the number over until you had a suitable two digit number to divide.

This strategy is meant to be a part of place value. However, you are teaching the exact standard algorithm not even discussing place value! The only difference is you are drawing a BOX. You are not mentioning that the 3 is being divided into 500...you just say 3 divided by 5. How is this different? I don't see this explanation as supporting student place value understanding at all.
@brianquick33249 жыл бұрын
+Jennifer Clayton You may teach it however you like. It isn't a be-all-end-all place value or division lesson. It is a supplement. However, students who have had difficulty with standard algorithm computations have shown success using this. Division is division - but this visual method seems to really impact students and they have achieved results. Feel free to not use this method if you so choose. It is another option for learners.

This is not a conceptual strategy. It is great as a "trick" but does not teach what division truly means in the sense of place value. It works... but a student would still not be able to explain in a deeper understanding. For example... the 7 in the dividend is NOT a 7, it is a 700. Teaching division this way is stripping students of the foundations of division.
@brianquick33248 жыл бұрын
Not really. Some students aren't ready for a deeper understanding, but this can help get them there.
