I don't think Robert Newton has ever been recognized for the outstanding actor that he was. This is an example of a master artist who does something so well; he makes it look so easy, that it seems a big nothing, when in fact it's a very big something. Newton should get a lifetime achievement award for the characters he created; everything from seventeenth century pirate to twentieth century modern man. I never get tired of his most rewarding performances. Aarrrh men.

R. Newton literally defined the characterization of a pirate from 1950 until even now, almost 70 years later. We even have a national "talk like a pirate day" where people talk exactly like he talks in his films. The Pirates of the Caribbean movies owe a great debt of gratitude to the character of Long John Silver for making Pirates the despicable, yet rascally sympathetic icons they arrrr. Now THAT is a legacy.

I loved the 1950 Treasure Island with Robert Newton. I didn't even know this film existed. Sadly, Newton would pass away two years after this movie debuted. I was born in 1978, and Treasure Island was just as popular when I was a child as it was in my parent's generation.

The wonderful Robert Newton is still the definitive Long John Silver, unsurpassed by none ! The plot, settings and general ambience are sooo campy, yet entertaining. Perhaps nowadays, this film would be considered to be non-PC, but during the late 1950s, nobody would have thought of such concepts. All good innocuous flim fun!

A sequel to Treasure Island with the excellent actor Robert Newton!? Shiver me timbers-it brings me back to when I was a wee lad ahrrrr! Treasure island was a great movie-and this is a fun revisit. Back when movies were more like theater productions and not the super realism or the computer generated fantasies of later years. It is nice to see the actors and sets, the costumes and writing and locations carry the movie.

Totally just realized that Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a remake of this! Governor's daughter Elizabeth is abducted by pirates. Rescued by a dimwitted boy and a cunning pirate. Boy has a medallion that leads to treasure. Pirate puts together a ramshackle crew. Pirate steals ships right out from under his enemies. Pirate and kid are marooned and escape from island. Boy taken by pirates. Pirate outsmarts enemy at the end, saves the boy. Pirate gets away at the end. Raise the ages of the kids, add a little CGI and a Keith Richards impersonation and you've got the biggest pirate franchise of all time!

Probably the most obvious model of Pirates of the Caribbean. - But nowadays, unfortunately, children are treated more like dogs and monkeys while the treasure coordinator is portrayed as a kraken or other sea monsters :D :D :) The Bible 1. Long before there was "Pirates of the Caribbean," there was "Treasure Island" ("Long John Silver"). The Mrs. says: The Movie studios always had every one's clothes so clean and you know that was not the case in those times, those drinking holes were filthy and everyone in there was rotten. Were looking at men who toiled on ships their whole lives, that is if they lived long enough, what the hell, where were the laundry matts,?? the real life appearance would be you living in the clothes you have on for many months and you only changed when the damn things literally rotted off your back.. Mr. Newton was suburb in this role and no one will ever be able to replace him, one of a kind like so many talented British actors and so grateful You-Tube carries these Cinema Jewels.

If no one's mentioned this already, THIS IS NOT A SEQUEL to the 1950 Disney Treasure Island film! What they have in common is that Long John Silver is played by the same lead actor but otherwise that's it. This is a different treatment on the same basic storyline. Heh... I have yet to see the 1950 Disney film, too. I have seen bits and pieces of the Treasure Island series they had on Disney Channel in the 1980s(?). Robert Newton was long dead by then. He died 2 years after this film was released theatrically.

I remember watching this film years ago when I was a little kid on BBC2. Mind you I only caught it from 54:33 and it was called Return to Treasure Island.

He really was a great actor and performed in may films and in a variety of roles ,but unfortunately he didn’t deserve to come to such a sad end , I believe that after his death his ashes were interned in America, but some years later were returned Britain and spread on the sea at Porthcurno near Lands End ,……what better a place for a pirate…

Oh my God, Yes! Manjunath, you should seriously study PIRATE MOVIES to learn how Americans REALLY speak. It's a well-kept secret that we privately speak in terms of ARRGH and MATEY between and amongst ourselves...like, every single day! We never let our respected foreign friends in on this secret language because, well, it's a guilty pleasure and it's almost embarrassing. So one thing you can do to prove you are really an American when working in a call center is to answer the phone in the following way: Thank ye fer callin' Skynet Industries. M'name is Watery Grave Willy, matey, and how can we assist yer salty ass today?

Left a note on the poorer copy of this on youtube. Connie Gilchrist a great MGM contract player, as Purity at least has the 2nd lead, the first in a long career. See her in"A Letter to 2 Wives" with Thelma Ritter as her beer-guzzling crony and laugh happily at an excellent movie - Linda Darnell, Jeanne Crain, Ann Sothern, et al, but her scenes with Darnell, Paul Douglas and Ritter are priceless. Just wanted to mention her name again. Newton is the best of all over-cooked, half-baked hams.
