THE LEGEND OF LONG MEG AND HER DAUGHTERS
The most famous of the many legends that surround the stones is that they were once a coven of witches who were turned to stone by a wizard from Scotland named Michael Scot. It is said the stones cannot be counted - but, if anyone is able to count them twice and come to the same total - the spell will be broken or it will bring very bad luck. Another legend states that if you walk round the circles and count the number of stones correctly, then put your ear to Long Meg, you will hear her whisper. The name itself is said to come from a local witch, Meg of Meldon, who was alive in the early 17th century. From a certain angle, the Long Meg stone resembles the profile of a witch, facing the stones. However that Meg of Meldon is the name given to Margaret Fenwick (née Selsby) who lived at Meldon near Morpeth, Northumberland, some 70 miles from these stones.

Thanks, Col, this was a nice surprise, as I have never heard of it until now. And seeing that it’s the 2nd largest stone henge in Britain … I do wonder how this has passed me by all these years. Just doing a bit of reading on this. It does seem it was recorded way before the witch ‘Meg of Melvin’ in the early 17th century. According to the Heritage Gateway, Camdem recorded there being 77 stones in 1599. The first British archeologist, William Stukeley, certainly got around. Not only did he investigate Wansdyke, Stonehenge, Avebury and Devil’s Den … but also this in 1725. In fact his record stated that several of the stones had just been broken up just before his visit. Which probably explains why there are only 69 left today. Also noted the proximity to water. All mesolithic/neolithic structures are typically a stone’s throw from water. No doubt they used the rivers to transport the stones. And this is no different, especially if you factor in the the ground water level was a lot higher back then. Really interesting video, well done and thanks for sharing 👍

Thx Chris, great info mate. It was my bruv who knew about it and as we were lookin for a new outdoor jacket in Penrith we tarted over there after. He told me about the Legend but I did do some research on it after. Could have done 10 mins+ on the place but pretty much used up all the footage I took in the vid. 👍
