I used your fundamentals of marksmanship, barrel break in with copper equilibrium and shot a .33" group my first time out with my Savage .308. 101 yards (as per two of my rangefinders) , 3 rounds of Federal GMM 168gr. I separated and grouped my rounds by measuring each and every OAL with dial calipers and recording them. All my 250 rounds were from the same lot. No muzzle brake, Caldwell front and rear sand bags, sitting position at a range bench. Magneto Speed chronograph. The expensive one ($399) Breathing, heart beats....all that. I used everything you ever discussed. Yes. It REALLY works. I had the most amazing groups my very first time out! See? I was listening to you. I was pleased, but not all that surprised. I went to the range with zero precision rifle experience. But with a ton of information and an open heart. I had the Lord in one ear and you in the other. No joke. All my groups were an inch or less. Each round has FPS recorded as well as all environmental detail and point of impact on the target logged in a log book. I found the whole experience to be almost religious. VERY meditative and SO much different than blasting away with my AR-15 or my Glock. What an unusual and unexpected experience. That part I was not really expecting. You don't discuss that much. It's personal. I get it.

I have noticed that body positioning changes cheek weld. So the scope should be mounted to fit different body positions.
@jmcb52156 жыл бұрын
If positioning your rifle differently on the bag is affecting the harmonics of the barrel then you do not have a free-floating barrel and you have an issue already because as long as the barrel is not touching anything and is properly bedded to the stock it isn't going to have a harmonic shift no matter where you put it unless you're touching the barrel to something other than the action

Surprised how it got to marksmanship basics only in part 88! I think it says that the author views the body behind the rifle as important but only if there is a learning soul behind the body. question i'm looking at a 308 win or 300 win mag for long range target shooting maybe out to 1000 yards and for deer and elk hunting from 100 yards to 300 yards and i,ll reload the 300 win mag down for deer hunting if i need to ? i know the 300 win mag is a little big for deer but if been look and it as slightly better ballistics than the 308.
@undeadhunter510 жыл бұрын

Hey Rex I was wondering what scope I should get and how many mils it should have for my 308 and I'm using ZQ1 ammo
@johndoyle20416 жыл бұрын
How important is it to keep the rifle level horizontally? Sometimes I'll look through the scope after I'm in position and the horizontal cross hair will look like it is not very level so then I'll try to re-adjust the feet of the bipod by pushing one side down or by propping the other side up. Some shooter's I've noticed have bubble levels attached to their scopes. Would you recommend having a bubble level?
@bff13165 жыл бұрын
@John Doyle If the rifle is not horizontal the angle the bullet follows will not be up and then a downward arc in a straight vertical line from your rifle. At close range it will not matter too much. The farther the shot is the greater the error. Think of the movie gangster pistol shooting and how the natural physics would prevent an accurate shot as the line of traverse is horizontal rather than vertical. What I do is as I breathe I watch my vertical reticle. When it is traveling up and down always on my POA, Point Of Aim, then I know I am horizontal. Then it is time to line up the horizontal reticle, pause and squeeze. If I feel that I moved I reaffirm my horizontal. Be safe, have fun

Hey Rex hope you are feeling well. I noticed you flinched at 03:52.... I am trying to work on eliminating or minimizing mine (flinch). Any tips or things you try ?
@Win94ae10 жыл бұрын
Blinking your eye after the shot isn't what is commonly referred to when talking about "flinch." "Flinch," would be when someone anticipates recoil, then jerks the trigger, because they are afraid of the shot. "The trick is to flinch after the rifle goes bang." If you are jerking the trigger; watch the 4th portion of the video again, "Trigger squeeze." 19:20
@jasonmarquez577610 жыл бұрын
Let me suggest a great and inexpensive technique to resolve your flinching issue. Load a dummy round into your rifle and balance a coin on the top of the barrel. Sight at a target and concentrate on all of the fundamentals of shooting: body position, breathing, sight picture, trigger control and follow through. The goal is to fire at the correct time without causing the slightest movement of the coin. If there is any flinching in your technique while pulling the trigger the coin will wiggle or fall off the barrel. Practice this at home every day for 5-10 minutes until you perfect the technique. Your brain's muscle memory will be activated through repetition of movement. After repeating this hundreds of times, without wiggling the coin, your technique will be correct and flinch free. When you are at the shooting range use the dummy round-coin technique for a few minutes before firing a live round. Then alternate firing live shots with the dummy round-coin technique when shooting groups. It will really help you relax and allow your muscle memory to take over. This will also let your rifle barrel cool a little more between shots which helps accuracy. I know this technique works because I used it to overcome my flinching problem when I switched from 22 LR to 308 Winchester. Hope this helps and good luck!

What is your opinion of the Barnes TTSX bullets? It seems to have a similar BC to the Hornady A-Max. I'm currently using 165gr Barnes TTSX in my 300 Win Mag for hunting purposes because they penetrate so reliably. As a side note, I would use 180gr but I prefer the slightly lower weight for hogs and whitetail deer. Just thought I'd get your thoughts because I'm a novice and you have such a broad base of knowledge on the subject. I'm working on building my rifle up and I'd like to do it right. Thanks!
@ZeroBoostBuick10 жыл бұрын
Solid copper projectiles are not ideal for target shooting because they foul the bore very fast and maintaining copper equilibrium would be impossible. I use 130gr Barnes tsx in my 300winmag for deer because I can push them to 3,500fps and have a very far point blank range, and not worry about bullet blow up at those speeds at close distance,... for target shooting I use 220gr machking and 208amax. I don't use the same barrel for hunting as for target shooting, this is why I love my Savage rifles, swapping barrels is easy.

What are your thoughts of a single shot rifle verses a bolt action rifle. Is the single shot rifle more accurate and reliable than a bolt action? The single shot has the obvious disadvantage of being slower to reload. But which one is the best for hunting or long range shooting? Also, why don't the military use single shot rifles for extreme long range shots if it is more reliable and accurate? I have been debating what to get for a first big game rifle. I have been looking at (for example) the Thompson/Center Progame hunter in .308 or something like a Remington 700. What would you recommend? Thanks!
@austinproduction1910 жыл бұрын
A quality bolt action rifle will last forever (as long as you maintain it properly and occasionally clean it). The military would never use a single shot rifle for an obvious reason... They are shooting people. Those people are intent on killing our soldiers. So say there's s gun fight happening and a marine sniper is over looking it, shooting Taliban when they attempt to fire at his fellow marines. If he missed the shot, one of his fellow marines could die in the time it took him to reload. With a single shot, (like a break barrel, not a bolt action) you would also have to take your rifle off target in order to reload.

How do you zero your rifle if you don't know exactly how it will used in the field? Maybe you're hunting and you don't know whether you'll have the time and/or line of sight to be able to deploy the bipod to take your shot. ? ?
@subjecttochange29438 жыл бұрын
+Pastafarian Remember the 6 P's: Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. You can re-zero your rifle any time you want, say the week before you go hunting. If you expect to be bench shooting, consider rezeroing before you put rounds out at a longer range. As far as spur of the moment condition changes its a matter of how familiar you are with how your system operates, I would be cautious about taking long range shots at game if you are uncomfortable with the conditions.

With something under the back of the rifle that is a little higher and then pushing down on the back of the rifle to line the target in your scope makes for a solid rest. With your hand under the rifle there is to much chance of movement. With accuracy being your primary goal why not make your rest as solid as possible?
