Not since the introduction of the 6.5 Creedmoor, have we seen such a game changing cartridge introduction.
A short list of key features and benefits include:
Hornady’s combination of perfect case design and bullets with very high ballistic coefficients results in amazing energy retention and minimal wind drift, even out of short barrel lengths.
The 7mm PRC uses a standard magnum bolt face and has a standard overall length of 3.30” and, therefore, fits in a standard magnum length magazine box. This means we can easily rebarrel existing bolt action rifles in most magnum calibers to a 7mm PRC.
Recoil falls between a 30-06 and 300 Win. Mag and is very manageable without muzzle brakes or suppressors.
Even with a 20” barrel length, cartridge performance is outstanding, making this a very suppressor friendly cartridge.
Extremely efficient case design results in longer barrel life than other 7mm magnum offerings.

I built a 7 SAUM several years ago with a 1-8 twist barrel and love it. 180 grain bullet at 2950, it’s funny how barrel twist choices by rifle manufacturers can make or break a cartridge. The 7mm PRC is just the failed short mag rebranded with a faster twist. I hope it works out I’m a fan of the 7mm.

Just like a cartridge can be too long it can also be too short… that’s why the 284 case shoots 7’s better than a rem mag or wsm. This is basically a modern shehane 284 or lrm case.

Thank you for this very well put together video. My only gripe is a potentially misleading statement at the end by the grey haired gentleman. The velocity (and therefore energy) retention at longer range has nothing to with the cartridge and everything to do with the high BC bullets that the 7 prc is meant to shoot (when compared to SAAMi twist/reamed 7 rem mags, which are not designed to shoot those high-bc bullets) All cartridges are just “vehicles” for muzzle velocity, after the bullet leaves the barrel, it doesn’t care what cartridge it came out of. Secondly, the 7 PRC is average at retaining velocity from shortening barrels, it is almost exactly 25fps per inch velocity reduction from 24” saami standard, which is the industry standard for barrel length versus velocity change. But like I said, great video; I just wanted to bring up the slightly misleading statement that velocity retention downrange is in anyway linked to the cartridge, it is not. Downrange velocity retention is all about bullet performance. But I do concede that some cartridges are made for modern high bc bullets, and some older cartridges are made for old low-bc bullets. Thanks!

I think it’s more so of PRC owners making it seem like it’s just that much better than the 7rem mag when it’s not. On paper, it’s true, the prc gives you numbers and energy a custom 7rem mag gave you with hand loads and custom, faster twist rate barrel but I’ve yet to see factory ammo that gives you those velocity numbers on the PRC that Hornady claims. So many people are thinking all I need is a 7PRC rifle and factory ammo and I’m all set when that’s not the case… and you can forget the advantage of the 7PRC with anything under a 24 in barrel.

Man the hunting/long range shooting community *really* gets toxic over new rounds lol. Half the comments are boomers saying that XYZ legacy cartridge is just as good/better or saying there is no point to the cartridge since "hunters" don't shoot long range (which translates to, THEY don't shoot long range). Its like everyone gets super defensive of their choice gun and cartridge and can't let anyone else have fun with the new stuff. Thanks for the numbers, interesting to see how will the 7 PRC performed out of the 20 inch. 24 inch wasn't as big a difference as I thought it would be.
@Marcusb338
@Marcusb338 2 жыл бұрын
It’s actually beyond belief how dumb some of the arguments are. One guys trying to tell me the rem mag has better performance because his gun apparently gets 3000fps with a 195gr. I’d love to know how long the barrel is and how long that brass lasts. It’s literally right there on paper, the PRC has a solid almost 100fps advantage. No serious long range hunter will choose a rem mag over the PRC. Why would you pick a cartridge with less performance with the same powder charge, need a custom barrel, and need a custom mag ( in most rifles ) to be able to run heavy projectiles at the right length? The rem mag will slowly fade out like the 260 rem. And I’ve got a rem mag, but it’s just not designed for what people want today.

Anyone who argues about any cartridge doing something a long time ago 50 years earlier etc only looks grain and fps. They don’t understand the bullets made them that xxx size are very different than almost everything today same weight. And certainly they dunno wtf makes a shehane. The point of the new cartridges is no lead bullets restrictions. Since copper is lighter than lead. A longer, higher ballistic coefficient bullets will be needed. As well as a 1 in 8 twist rate to stabilize bullets. To differentiate the cartridge from lower twist rate cartridges. A slightly different cartridge was developed. If no lead bullets are NOT an issue for the hunter.. The new cartridges may not be so compelling to buy. I have short range rifles like 350 Legend and 45Colt for some situations. But for my longer range rifles such as the .308 and 270 Win. The new cartridges may produce better outcomes with no lead bullets. One of my nephews has a 6.5 PRC. And I have a 6.5 Creedmoor that I bought to introduce my grandkids to long range shooting. So it seems to me, that over time. The new cartridges will become as popular as the 270 Win, 308 Win, and the 30-06. The 7mm crowd, may just collect ALL the variations of 7mm.

You do not own a more efficient 7 unless it’s a shehane or lrm. A short fat 175 at 2900 does not go as far or do what a long skinny 175 does. And whatever you own if it’s more than about 15 years old it’s not a comparison. No matter what it is. Don’t just rely on numbers on the box. That’s what 260 and 6.5x55 guys do. Then they buy an actual good modern 140 pill and find out it’s stuffed so far down they are now 200 fps under the 6.5 needsmore. Just cause they saw 140 2800 vs 140 2800.

I hope you will answer this question. I see no one asking for verification of the velocity results in this video. Energy is a product of mass/velocity, correct? How are you achieving 1668 FPE at 800 yards, with the 175 ELD-X FACTORY LOAD? According to Strelok, you would need 3080 FPS with that bullet, to achieve 1664 FPE at 800 yards. And all the comments I see here, are just assuming the numbers shown are factual. I will agree with one response... 100 fps gain is not enough to sell me on a new rifle. At 800 yards, using the same bullet, that gain is greatly diminished. I'm a dedicated 6.5 PRC shooter, and 6.8W. As well as 7 RM. I have wanted to jump into the 7PRC game, but honest results in must rifles are not showing the results Hornady advertises. I hope you'll do another video, to dive more deeply into this topic, specifically as it relates to the 7PRC. Maybe even do a side by side comparison to a closely matched 7RM. Thanks

You did not post velocities. With all the failed velocity results shared by many 7PRC shooters, your Energy Numbers can only be helpful and reliable, if you share the actual tested velocity results. Hardly anyone is getting the Hornady advertised velocities from factory 7PRC ammunition. The rem mag? Has more capacity sure. But capacity isn’t the whole story. Case geometry plays a huge part. Way more efficient, you’re getting higher velocity with less powder. @@danelobe2524 7mm what? I have no clue what you mean by 7mm? There’s dozens of 7mm cartridges. How’s it a gimmick? What other rifle can you buy off the shelf with matching ammo that shoots a 0.79 BC projectile at near 3000fps. I own a rem mag but it’s outdated and has issues. The twist rate limits me to 160gr projectiles or less. And the mag length in my tikka means I can’t seat the projectile out far enough to get good powder capacity. All I need to do is put a new barrel on and I can shoot whatever projectile I want, 100fps quicker with the same powder charger, and have zero stress with mag length. 3 pretty big selling points right there. Nobody buys 260 remingtons anymore now the 6.5 creed exists. I bet everyone said it was a gimmick back then but why would you buy a 260 when a 6.5 is on the shelf and is far more optimised for heavy projectiles that have higher sectional densities for bigger game, and retain far more velocity and energy for long range hunting or targets.

There is no cartridge that’s better or worse in performance. Obviously a .22LR and 300rum have different uses. But optimisation and being flexible is a huge selling point now. You can do everything in the PRC that the rem mag can do, but the rem mag was never made for heavy projectiles. Which is the major selling point. People aren’t going to run out and sell their rem mags tomorrow. But when someone’s in the market for a long range deer rifle the 7PRC would have the be at the top of the list. There’s no way you’d pick the rem mag over it. Which is what I’ll do in a couple years, get a nice 24 inch barrel to put on my rem mag and do everything my rem mag could do but with 100fps more, and being able to handle 162-195gr bullets that the old rem mag can’t

Great, sounds like you don’t need one then! But for the people who want a great all rounder off the shelf that’s capable of extreme long range it’s the best option. Name a single gun you can pick up off the shelf that shoots flatter with factory ammo, and doesn’t blow your shoulder off with recoil while burning 100gr of powder like a 28 nosler or 338 lap. Why does everyone get so mad when people want to get something that shoots extremely flat. It’s like you’re offended that someone will buy a gun that’s capable of 1500y but only shoots at 300 tops. So what? Just because it can shoot far doesn’t make it bad for close range 😂

@@Marcusb338 because it doesn't do anything significantly better than what is already cheaply available. All these new rounds are nothing more than renamed cartridge's with a tiny tweak to avoid a patent issue., most that have existed for more than 50 years. Remember the 6.8 creedmore? the 6.5-06 beats it in the velocity department by 300fps using old neck sized 30-06 brass thats over 100 years old. how bout the 260 Remington that took the long range tacical competitions long before the 6.5 creed... get yourself a reloading manual and see for yourself... all these new rounds are nothing new... its all about muzzle velocity and bullet weight... and you cannot change how much powder it takes to move a bullet a given velocity. and when you have only 100fps difference... thats simply a waste of money. this is all about selling new rifles, , new ammo, new reloading dies, new brass and above all new rifles.. this new PRC is nothing but a rebranded 7mm WSM with a 5 deg change in neck angle and neck length of +0.1" so that they can call it a new round from a different manufacturer. and anyone that thinks recoil changes despite the velocity of the same weight bullet is a moron. you cant get around the laws of physics. this crap happened back in the 1990s when the 300 whisper by SSK came out... but nooo... they rebranded the same round by a big manufacturer and called it the 300 black out... they are now doing the same thing with the new 8.6 blackout... aka 338 whisper of the 1990s. this is all a tacti-cool money grab. 95% of people that own these rifles cant shoot past 500 yards to save their life to begin with. I once meet an old hunter at our camp that Ive been going to for 30 years... all his shots were neck shots... pigs, coyotes, does, (didnt shoot bucks, he said does tasted better)... never missed. shot out to 200 yards rarely to 300... and all he had was the same 40 year old 7mm-08 with the same old 3-9 Leopold duplex scope. yet none of these kids with their new hot Ultra mags, 300 WSMs and 300 PRCs, wind gauges, range finders, scent blockers mossy oak crap could ever match his success for taking game for 30 years plus.

@@renaissanceman5847 it is nothing groundbreaking. These new ones are just better optimised for a wider range of purposes. Wanna know why the 260 and the 6.5-06 faded away? they had good velocity sure, but slow twist rates from factory that limit them to light projectiles, that in conjunction with their speed absolutely explode when they hit deer. Velocity is just a secondary factor these days. It’s all about being able to use the heaviest bullet you possibly can. The rem mag which the PRC is really aimed at is fine how it is, I’ve got one myself. But for someone who wants to have the ( option ) for long range work, you’d be stupid to pick a rem mag up when it has 100fps less velocity with the same powder charge and a slow twist rate that’s limited to 162gr projectiles or so. The other problem with the rem mag in many rifles is mag length, it was never designed to seat long projectiles at 3.340 COAL which is what many rifle magazines are. It’s not about convincing people to run out and sell their rifles to get something that’s groundbreaking and new. It’s just many small improvements that make sense to choose it as your next rifle. once PRC ammo and components are available I can’t see a single upside to picking up a rem mag over it. I believe it does fit a niche. I love the 7mm bore and have always wanted a really nice cartridge that is capable of very long range yet is at a nice recoil level. The two at the moment are the rem mag, (7mmWSM which barely anyone makes and has a slow twist ) and 28 nosler. The rem mag is great but has the issue of the slow twist rate in the vast majority of factory rifles, and the nosler is massively overbore which most people can’t handle. Yes Hornady is crazy with their marketing, but at what point is it still a gimmick? how many rifles and ammo makers need to take it up before it’s decided maybe people do want it? You can argue nobody really “ needs” more than a 30-30 so everything else is a gimmick.
