Alco makes bullets using equipment designed by Dave Corbin of Corbin swage Die. Dave came up with all the theory on the rebated rim deflecting muzzle turbulence. He would also say it uniforms the transition area from bearing surface to flight, so that (on a properly cut and lapped crown) the bearing surface of the bullet will stop touching the rifling on all sides at the exact save time. More uniformly than a standard boat tail. The truth is that during the bullet making process, the last operation points the jacketed bullet giving it is ogive, it uses a cup punch to cradle the rear of the bullet and press the front of the bullet into point forming die. well the cup of the cup punch intended for boat tails was too thin at its end and kept splitting under the pressure of the swage press (much more than a reloading press). They rebated the rim to give the cup punch a 90 degree shoulder to support the load of the bullet pointing operation. So like most things they did it for ease of manufacturing purposes and then sprinkled some ballistic theory on it.

I should add that I make the same exact projectiles, aluminum tips and all using Dave Corbins s press, he designed the ULD triple hybrid ogive design Alco is selling.

8x57IS boat tail heavey ball ammo has 4,33 BC so it kind of makes me wonder wouldnt be a heavey tip/ high density material be the best for long range like a bullet with long aluminum body, copper jacket and a large and sharp tungsten tip with 2 places with larger diameter where the jacket hits the rifling ,a ring in the front and one in the back similar to artillery with their copper bands and the spanic 7.92x40 Cetme except of a tungsten carbide tip and a pressed in low spot in the jacket so it onley has barrel contact in front and back insead of full lenght also interesting are bullets that have a similarly shaped tip on the back of the bullet out of a lightweight material to counter / eliminate the drag from the vacuum behind the bullet

Great video. One nitpick on physics. Momentum does not matter, from a physical standpoint. Internal ballistics favors heavier projectiles as they take more energy from the gas-bullet system. External ballistics favors heavier bullets as they have a slower speed and thus loose less energy in travel. Momentum is a physical measure useful only coupled with it's law of conservation to determine the speeds that are attained after all forces take their toll and do their damage.

Hey Rex...while this vid is ancient by interweb standards, a question: have you actually tested the ALCOs BCs? I've read SOME posts in forums that they are overstating their BCs by a fair amount and wonder if it is true. I'm about to buy some but would like to know their REAL BCs, or a comparison of the calculated ballistic data given their BC vs what really happens. Have you done so or WOULD you do so? I'd also like to hear about real world performance of TROM as well. How well do these guys stack up to the old standard Sierra Matchkings?

I've always wondered if there were any very high BC(for caliber) .30 caliber bullets(or cartridges that shoot them.) I know they have 220 grain bullets for like .300 win mags, but due to that cartridge being not ideal/efficient for long range applications, I always wondered if there was like a 6.5CM equivalent for a 30 cal, even if it's a wildcat cartridge. With the popularity of .30 caliber rounds in the US, it always surprised me that could never find one.

I would assume that the new Hornady bullets with high temp polymer tips are far less expensive than aluminum/alloy tip bullets; is that true or is Hornady charging a premium for their new (for now) heat resistant polymer tips? Any scuttlebutt on other brands developing their own high temp polymer tips? I'm also curious if the new polymer allows for sharper tips? (may be 'different' is a more accurate descriptor than 'new' for the polymer they are using for tips?) Thanks for the great info and explanations, as usual, Rex!
@scottywhittaker9888 жыл бұрын
I use the new hornady eld match bullet in 30cal and 208 grain with the heat resistant tip. The g1 is .670. I am a firm believer in the tips, with the old amax at about mid range the group would open up unproportionatly to what it should have I thought. These new ones do not, the 'cone' of impact is exactly linier not exponential, and as a consultation the BC is crazy high for 30 cal

that sst bullet with the polymer tip that he examined for the 7mm group is my favorite , its like a hybrid between .243 and .308 , it has plenty good hitting power for hunting much like the 308 and still keeps the higher speed because it is a smaller round much like .22 how the smaller the faster so in my opinion if you want a good hunting and range rifle go with this round the 7mm 08 140 grain , they also make a 7mm which is a very very slightly bigger bullet but with a bigger casing so you can get the extra power you would need to hunt but as far as range it only goes out to about 600 yrds before it is very unrealistic

Good stuff, thanks for the video. I freaking geek out over this stuff so hardcore. Being in Texas I find myself in conversations about shooting fairly often and I can tell I'm way past the normal person's understanding when I start talking about barometric pressure, ballistic coefficient, ammo temperature, etc... and they kinda just nod and agree with whatever I say. Hey, some guys like cars and motorcycles, I like guns and the extreme long range stuff is almost like talking in detail about stealth fighter jets while the other guy is talking about a Honda Civic with a cool aftermarket body kit on it.....

The true student athlete. If you've got the IQ for it you can influence the battlefield far beyond any other one to six man squad. Since the constitution classifies able bodied male citizens between the ages of 17-55 as the "unorganized militia" I consider it my duty as an American to become the best warrior that I'm capable of being. I'm optimistic she won't win but if Hillary does get elected I've seen a lot of indicators through open source information and I'm not exaggerating we will enter into a hot war with Russia within a year.....

@EeroVuori8 жыл бұрын
7mm rem mag is SAAMI and CIP caliber. 7mm-.300win mag is .300win mag necked down to 7mm bullets. They wary slightly in case capacity. G7 should always be preferred over G1, if using boat tail bullets. G1 is more popular because its higher value looks better in brochures.

I ordered 100 of the ALCO ULD Target bullets (.308 168gr Rebated Boat Tail ). When inspecting them, I noted hat the aluminum tips were wobbling and not firmly attached to the bullet. This wasn't peculiar to just a few bullets, the entire batch of 100 were this way. I didn't think that was normal so I contacted the company. To date, ALCO has not been forthcoming with about replacing the obviously defective bullets.. Considering the price of these bullets, quality control and customer service needs to be uncompromising. I was just curious what others have experienced.

Gemmill Shannon the sent me a new box, I emailed them a video with showing 18 out of the 100 I ordered and they 2 day'ed me a 100 when only 18 was a problem.. they took care of me and dis so happily and quickly.. I will say this, the B.C is over rates by a fair bit.. I have done real world chrony work and the stated B.Cs much higher then real world.. we built a 7mm RUM around these bullets that is a solid action slide the bolt out extraction setup on a 28 inch barrel and once we got a load built that the gun liked man do they preform.. the over stated B.c isn't a I just wish they corrected it and listed a true B.C.. this gun is the most accurate gun we have ever done past 2.5km... it is absolitely phenomenal.. if you want insane performance at insane ranges the Alco's are amazing performers.. if you build a gun around a projectile and are after extreme long range precision these bullets are insane.. in 7mm RUM it was wildly hard to build a load that the gun ate up, 7mm and .300 rums imho have never been the easiest cals to build loads for however this gun took as around 55 load revisions to find one it really ate up and gave us the sub half MOA 5 shot groups we knew the gun was capable of.. that's 55 load revisions WITH ONE BULLET, not trying to find bullets the gun liked so going through a lot of loads because of building loads for different bullets... no this was over 55 load revisions on a single projectile... but once we got it.. we got it, gun is printing. 35 MOA 5 shot groups consistently with .5 MOA being a large group.. they deff preform once you find a load, if I would have went 7mm mag I'm sure load dev would have been much easier, I really thought about going 7mm STW because I've never built a STW so we went RUM like a dummy but it turned out to be a very good idea, flatest shooting gun we have ever built period with the ALCO's.

i think the alcos had some testing done. found they were bellow advertised bc (i suspect many are). on par with the berger. not sure how the berger eol would perform by the same tester, but it seems the alco doesn't buy you much extra. I believe it's the rebated boat tail. It just seems to me that if it were as good as claimed, it would have been a lot more popular. I'll say this though, those tips should be more popular, we know a pointier tip will give gains but I suspect they booger the terminal ballistics. Would like to see a similar length copper solid compared to the eol and alco.

I took my antelope this year with a 175g matchking. Got the job done with a fist sized exit wound.

Try shooting at something that can shoot back, see how you fare

@@Abdal-RahmanI Oh man, you're so cool, making assumptions and all. How do you know I haven't? It was also a doe, so before you try and go all "trophy hunting for sport and blah blah blah", it was a meat hunt, as they all are, and she was delicious. Imagine commenting on a 6 year old comment about bullets. How sad 🤡🤡😂😂😂

You keep saying at long range, well what distance in yards does "long range" begin? 300yds?, 400yds.?

compute cross sectional area divided by bullet mass. the ratio gives the tendency to drift in crosswind. the lower the ratio the better per bullet mass and the less drift

Very Low Drag (VLD) bullets are often too long to work through a magazine and must be loaded singly. But Berger has VLD Hybrid bullets that combine VLD and long ogive shapes for a great Ballistic Coefficient (BC). This Berger Hybrid shape is short enough to work in most rifle magazines. This Hybrid design reduces wind drift and INCREASES the distance it will retain supersonic flight compared to non Hybrid and non VLD bullets.. Yes the total trajectory height will be higher than a lighter bullet of that caliber and cartridge BUT it will retain the supersonic speed longer thus avoiding transonic "wobble" and less accuracy. SEE BRIAN LITZ' BOOKS ON BALLISTICS AND ACCURACY.

Pizza Hut bathroom LOL - but hey all you really need to do is just get a nice little lav mic and you'll never have to film in the Pizza Hut bathroom ever again :)

If you perfurate the barrel to lose pressure before the bullet let the muzzle the air will not disturb the bullet. The idea is let the bullet get out of the barrel just by inertia.
@EeroVuori8 жыл бұрын
So you would lose velocity big time. You would be carrying dead weight. Muzzle blast is not that big of a concern for long range shooters as long as crowning is appropriate.
