What is the best long range rifle bullet? In this video, Rex compares long range rifle bullets such as the Berger VLD, Sierra Matchking, the Hornady A-Max and the Nosler LR Accubonds. If an ultra long range bullet is needed to maximize your maximum effective range, there is some new technology to consider. ULD bullet was developed during the Viet Nam era for both long range military sniper operations and later, applied to experimental bullets for Secret Service assignments. Some of the characteristics of Alco's ULD or Ultra Low Drag design were also incorporated in a similar but later development called the VLD or very low drag design. Both designs are equivalent for all practical purposes, except that the full ULD specification includes a rebated boattail design instead of the standard boattail (for about 15% gain in a accuracy by reducing muzzle-blast induced dispersion: the RBT step deflects most of the muzzle blast gas in a ring whereas the conventional BT tends to focus it into a ball in front of the emerging bullet, adding about 15% to the dispersion or random buffeting of the projectile.)
Alco's Ultra Low Drag or ULD bullets use both a rebated boattail and a 14-caliber secant with a .014-inch offset from tangent, to achieve minimum air resistance for a given weight and caliber.
Using the aluminum tip gives you approximately 0.50 thousandths longer bullet and will shift the weight to the rear of bullet and adds to the BC. The steel tip is used for thick skin animals and any rough service apps, like removing bullet from rifle several times a day. Steel tip work well if you have to have a shorter OAL bullet because some barrel twist rates won’t stabilize a longer bullet.
The Ultra Low-Drag design projectiles are very streamlined with a long nose and we use either mild steel or aluminum for the Ballistic Tip that intersects the body of the projectile. This does 2 things: One, it increases the Ballistic Coefficient of the projectile, and two it allows the tip to be pushed into the body of the projectile for maximum expansion when hunting game animals and is utterly devastating on Large Game.
The Rebated boat tail or (RBT) is a hybrid between the accurate flat base projectile and the long range stability of the traditional boat tail projectile. In turn, you get the best of both worlds, and when combined with the ULD design and longer ballistic tip, you get one of the most accurate projectiles.
Each Projectile is hand Swagged and not your ordinary assembly line projectile from the large competitors. Ultra match bullets are run on an ultra sonic concentricity machine for gyroscopic stability.

It pains me to think of how much less valuable other content is that is posted on KZbin which gets higher acclaim/views than Rex' series. Thanks for creating and sharing -- you are bringing knowledge (and even wisdom) to your audience. Keep up the great work and know that your efforts are appreciated!

Good bullet introduction, looking forward to the next vid. I'm glad you showed some bullets with polymer tips and hope you'll talk more about their effectiveness and limitations in the next videos. Long after I bought a 1000 .338 300 gr Nosler Accubonds I started hearing about the 'tip' issues and started to wonder if I made a mistake. Since then I have switched over to the Berger .338 300 gr OTM Tactical's.

I seem to recall the SMK 175 (which is a hollow point) was not classed as a hollow point by the solicitor general but the hollow point was classe d as a "manufacturing anomoly" thus meaning it wasn't in breach of Hague Convention Declaration III and so Marines could use it as the M118 round ...Love your videos Rex, please keep them coming, they are the best on the web by a mile...

8x57IS boat tail heavey ball ammo has 4,33 BC so it kind of makes me wonder wouldnt be a heavey tip/ high density material be the best for long range like a bullet with long aluminum body, copper jacket and a large and sharp tungsten tip with 2 places with larger diameter where the jacket hits the rifling ,a ring in the front and one in the back similar to artillery with their copper bands and the spanic 7.92x40 Cetme except of a tungsten carbide tip and a pressed in low spot in the jacket so it onley has barrel contact in front and back insead of full lenght also interesting are bullets that have a similarly shaped tip on the back of the bullet out of a lightweight material to counter / eliminate the drag from the vacuum behind the bullet

Hey Rex...while this vid is ancient by interweb standards, a question: have you actually tested the ALCOs BCs? I've read SOME posts in forums that they are overstating their BCs by a fair amount and wonder if it is true. I'm about to buy some but would like to know their REAL BCs, or a comparison of the calculated ballistic data given their BC vs what really happens. Have you done so or WOULD you do so? I'd also like to hear about real world performance of TROM as well. How well do these guys stack up to the old standard Sierra Matchkings?

I've always wondered if there were any very high BC(for caliber) .30 caliber bullets(or cartridges that shoot them.) I know they have 220 grain bullets for like .300 win mags, but due to that cartridge being not ideal/efficient for long range applications, I always wondered if there was like a 6.5CM equivalent for a 30 cal, even if it's a wildcat cartridge. With the popularity of .30 caliber rounds in the US, it always surprised me that could never find one.

Hello, I am having Proof research build me a rifle for my ibex hunts, I brought a 7mm on last hunt in Mongolia and it did ok.. was thinking about about going with a 300 wm for the rest of them thoughts? looking for a caliber that has the range, that will shoot flat and will have the knock down power at distance. I know 7mm is popular but to be honest since I have one I was going to go with a different caliber and on the other hand if that is the best one then I will just stick with it. Thanks for any feed back PS before you say use the 7mm you have its heavy and if you have ever been on any hunt like this weight matters...

that sst bullet with the polymer tip that he examined for the 7mm group is my favorite , its like a hybrid between .243 and .308 , it has plenty good hitting power for hunting much like the 308 and still keeps the higher speed because it is a smaller round much like .22 how the smaller the faster so in my opinion if you want a good hunting and range rifle go with this round the 7mm 08 140 grain , they also make a 7mm which is a very very slightly bigger bullet but with a bigger casing so you can get the extra power you would need to hunt but as far as range it only goes out to about 600 yrds before it is very unrealistic

Great video. One nitpick on physics. Momentum does not matter, from a physical standpoint. Internal ballistics favors heavier projectiles as they take more energy from the gas-bullet system. External ballistics favors heavier bullets as they have a slower speed and thus loose less energy in travel. Momentum is a physical measure useful only coupled with it's law of conservation to determine the speeds that are attained after all forces take their toll and do their damage.

I would assume that the new Hornady bullets with high temp polymer tips are far less expensive than aluminum/alloy tip bullets; is that true or is Hornady charging a premium for their new (for now) heat resistant polymer tips? Any scuttlebutt on other brands developing their own high temp polymer tips? I'm also curious if the new polymer allows for sharper tips? (may be 'different' is a more accurate descriptor than 'new' for the polymer they are using for tips?) Thanks for the great info and explanations, as usual, Rex!

I use the new hornady eld match bullet in 30cal and 208 grain with the heat resistant tip. The g1 is .670. I am a firm believer in the tips, with the old amax at about mid range the group would open up unproportionatly to what it should have I thought. These new ones do not, the 'cone' of impact is exactly linier not exponential, and as a consultation the BC is crazy high for 30 cal

Good stuff, thanks for the video. I freaking geek out over this stuff so hardcore. Being in Texas I find myself in conversations about shooting fairly often and I can tell I'm way past the normal person's understanding when I start talking about barometric pressure, ballistic coefficient, ammo temperature, etc... and they kinda just nod and agree with whatever I say. TiborasaurusRex I appreciate that. I'm of the impression that like minded people tend to gravitate towards each other in the world even if they don't know yet that they have so much in common. I just knew back in the day when I stumbled across your channel it would be one of the most important on KZbin for me. I think of "snipers" for lack of a better term as the all around warrior. The true student athlete. If you've got the IQ for it you can influence the battlefield far beyond any other one to six man squad. Since the constitution classifies able bodied male citizens between the ages of 17-55 as the "unorganized militia" I consider it my duty as an American to become the best warrior that I'm capable of being. I'm optimistic she won't win but if Hillary does get elected I've seen a lot of indicators through open source information and I'm not exaggerating we will enter into a hot war with Russia within a year.....

Alco makes bullets using equipment designed by Dave Corbin of Corbin swage Die. Dave came up with all the theory on the rebated rim deflecting muzzle turbulence. He would also say it uniforms the transition area from bearing surface to flight, so that (on a properly cut and lapped crown) the bearing surface of the bullet will stop touching the rifling on all sides at the exact save time. More uniformly than a standard boat tail. The truth is that during the bullet making process, the last operation points the jacketed bullet giving it is ogive, it uses a cup punch to cradle the rear of the bullet and press the front of the bullet into point forming die. well the cup of the cup punch intended for boat tails was too thin at its end and kept splitting under the pressure of the swage press (much more than a reloading press). They rebated the rim to give the cup punch a 90 degree shoulder to support the load of the bullet pointing operation. So like most things they did it for ease of manufacturing purposes and then sprinkled some ballistic theory on it.

Why dont they design a bullet the same as the above but with the cg ahead of the cp?? Surely this wouldn't be difficult with a FMJ making only the inside tip a heavy core made of lead for example..

i think the alcos had some testing done. found they were bellow advertised bc (i suspect many are). on par with the berger. not sure how the berger eol would perform by the same tester, but it seems the alco doesn't buy you much extra. I believe it's the rebated boat tail. It just seems to me that if it were as good as claimed, it would have been a lot more popular. I'll say this though, those tips should be more popular, we know a pointier tip will give gains but I suspect they booger the terminal ballistics. Would like to see a similar length copper solid compared to the eol and alco.

Scenars dont have that rebated boat tail. D46, .30cal subsonic, d166 and bullex-n does have.

compute cross sectional area divided by bullet mass. the ratio gives the tendency to drift in crosswind. the lower the ratio the better per bullet mass and the less drift

Whats the difference between a 7mm rem mag and a 7mm-300 win mag? Also are there times when its better to reference G7 over G1 ballistic coefficients? Which one do people usually refer to?
@eerovuori4827
@eerovuori4827 7 жыл бұрын
7mm rem mag is SAAMI and CIP caliber. 7mm-.300win mag is .300win mag necked down to 7mm bullets. They wary slightly in case capacity. G7 should always be preferred over G1, if using boat tail bullets. G1 is more popular because its higher value looks better in brochures.

xXspectre170Xx G7 is not always the preferred form factor. Hence the reason firing solution software like FFS (Lex Talus corp) doesn't use it but instead uses custom drag curves off G1.
