Good video, I agree with all that you covered. Just wanted to add, Varget is a very good choice but many times is very hard to get, I'm using Hodgdon BL-C2 and seems to be easier to find, I buy it in 8lb kegs. You mentioned about going subsonic at 1000 yards, I use a CCI Magnum primer, since your not loading max load it won't effect the cup pressure to much, but it will bump your velocity about 100 ft per second. 45.8 gr BL-C2 it's pushing about 2850 at MV. I shoot a 168gr bthp SMK, Now there is a bullet made that will hold a close trajectory as the .300 win mag, Its a Alco 168gr rebated bullet. It will out shoot anything on the market, very flat trajectory the reason being it has a bullet coeffiency of .618 A 168gr bthp smk has a coeffiency of about .450

I've been shooting the 175 grain Berger's in my 30" Bartlein barreled, Defiance action rifle chambered in .308 Winchester in our Mid-range F-class matches. I just climbed into the NRA High-Master classification this season. I believe the reason for this is that I now weigh everything and I’ve focused heavily on my trigger control. I weigh my brass cases to the grain, and my powder charges and bullets to the 1/10th of a grain on an electronic scale. I believe this has made a big difference in my scores as my average Is currently 590.00 in FT/R class. I've been shooting a 1,000 round batch of Federal GMM brass that I shot prior to loading my own ammo. We carefully prepped the brass inside and out and it's been working very well for me. I neck-size only with Lee’s Colet Neck-size die. I'm now on my second firing of the brass. Once the primer pockets loosen up I'll scrap the GMM brass and go with 1,000 rounds of brand new Lapua brass of the same lot number. The other things I really focused on this season were making better wind calls on the firing line, cleaning my barrel properly after each and every match, and again, my trigger control. While there are more efficient cartridges out there for F-class, the thing I really like about the .308 is the extended barrel life I’ll get. I don’t need to spin a new barrel on each season like I would if I were shooting any of the 6 or 6.5 millimeter cartridges.

I use the Berger classic hunter 168g, with 41.9g Varget in Lake City brass, cci br primers and shoot out of a 1 in 10, 22inch barrel and it's Awesome...out to 800 yards. I live in Wyoming at a higher elevation..4,500 ft so that has a little to do with it. Shoot so good I've yet to try the 175's or 178's in my safe. I guess one day I will...figure if I want to stretch my legs, I'd put the 26 inch 338 lapua barrel in...but more money. Nice video.

Fred Waldon Well I was loading the Berger 168g target bullets (yellow box) but do love to hunt so I switched over to the Orange box 168g Hunter classic thinking practice with I intend to hunt with but have yet to kill anything other than steel so far. I'm in Gillette...

Good video Bob, I am just starting to reload rifle ammo, and 308. hoping to get to Bisley in the next month to try out to 1000 yds. so good information for me, I have bought the Lapua brass and the 175 Match king, so looks like I bought the right stuff. Keep up the good work, nice to watch an English vid I understand.

If you want to go to 600y ish that's a good bullet. if you want to go to 1000y you are going to need a 175 smk or a 168 A-max they have a longer point and a higher BC. The 168 smk don't perform as well when they get close to sub sonic speed.
@mikecall609 жыл бұрын
+taiming71 I second this, my experience is 168's are good to 600yds. When I go 800yds, I jump up to the 175.....when I go 1000yds, I switch to my 6.5mm lol less recoil and better BC!
@blubullit9 жыл бұрын
+taiming71 Hmmm, I did not know that, thank you. Ive been a big fan of 168's but now ill give 175's a try...

As the projectile transitions to subsonic velocity, its own shock wave strikes it from behind, causing instability, both aerodynamically and gyrationally. Hence the advantage of a boat tail at range! I think...

Great video, thank you, I load the .308 Winchester, I load a Sierra 168 grain MK with Lapua brass, 42 grains of Varget, with a cci BR large rifle primer, and can get .5 inch groups at 500 yards , my rifle is a Rem. 700 police with a 24” bbl with 1:12 twist, on an AICS stock, with a Harris bipod, an HVR Jewel trigger, and a Mark 4 Leopoldo ER 5-32x 50 optics, and I love the light recoil it carry’s, I wish I could shoot out to a 1,000 yards, I would try your medicine for the 175 grain SMK’s👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼

Great vid... I also shoot pretty close to the same load as you. I have good experience with the Hornady match brass, and I also have a metric shit ton of match grade military brass I use as well. I will give the Lapua brass a try. Nothing with Lapua on it is bad quality. I use 168's to hunt, and 175's for match. The 168's turn hard right after roughly 600yds. I use Varget in my 5.56 reloads, but use Benchmark and RL15 in my .308 with good results. I'll have to try the Varget in the .308 now that I've seen your load.

Hi Bob , you say that with Lapua brass they are ready to load up out of the box without any case prep , that all we need to do is prime them and load em up . My question is wouldn’t it be best to run them into the full length die first to size them to minimum spec , and then fire form them in our chamber ?

I have a SCAR 17, 1/12, 16". I just got my Dillon 550 set up but haven't used it yet. I'm using Lake City brass. I'm stuck on going with 168 or 175 grain Match kings. What would you suggest? These rifles are capable of 1MOA and if I can get close to that I'd be happy. I'll be going out to 500 yards. Thanks.
@jackkeeble43516 жыл бұрын
Brasso should never go near brass cases because of the ammonia content, it attacks the molecular scale and can deform its integrity causing cracking etc, brass is 70% copper and 30% zinc both which react to ammonia.. the cartridge is the only thing between you and 50,000 + psi.. many people have never had a problem but it’s better to be safe than sorry!
@chrisnunns96522 жыл бұрын
Good caution re the use of Brasso - I did not know that. I clean my case necks with a very fine steel wool which seems to work well.

im reloading 168 grain Vmax. what load would you recommend using?
@Bobseal22310 жыл бұрын
I don't use this particular bullet. The recommended load for a 168 grain is 41.0 to 45.7 grains of Varget. I would strongly advise you to buy a reloading manual. I use the Lyman 49th edition as my main manual. Cheers, Bob.
@fiveoaksfarmofgeorgia76055 жыл бұрын
I use 168 gr VMax for hunting. It's a great bullet, but the 168's take a hard right turn around 600yds, where the 175's won't.
