Thank you - I've watched about a dozen videos to try to learn this and yours is the only one that worked for me!

I need to add my WOW too! I have been knitting a little over twenty years and you just made long tail cast on my favorite. I refused to do it that way because of being to tight and now; just amazing. I subscribed because I see that you can improve my knitting by leaps and bounds. Thank you so much for being the teacher I have dreamed would help me for all this time.

Brilliant!! thank you so much for this clear instructional video. Long-tail cast-on is a new concept for me. I've just done a cast on that is neither too tight, or where I ran out of tail (I watched your "how to improve your long-tail cast on"). I learned the same English method of cast-on when younger - thank you for the reboot on the muscle memory and your tips for vastly improving my technique - its the neatest cast on I've ever done!!

This is awesome! This method looks a lot easier than the slingshot method, especially for people with limited hand mobility.

Yes. That is why someone requested it for her mother whose hands have become arthritic. I injured my left thumb (hyperextension) 7 months ago and couldn't knit at all for 2 months. That joint has grown a substantial arthritic "bump" and still hurts sometimes. This method gives me more control than the slingshot method. It never hurts to know more than one way to do things.

Just tried this cast on...edge looks much more cleaner that my usually way of long tail casting. Thanks again...

Thanks again Cheryll. I had seen someone doing it, but wasn't sure how to. There we go!

Thank you for this video! I have used the slingshot method it seems like forever, but now that I see you do it, I vaguely remember learning that a long, long, long time ago. I think I might just go back to this method!

This is the way my mother taught me to cast on back in the "Dark Ages" (LOL) when I was about 7 years old. We won't mention how many decades ago that was. I don't think I've seen anyone use it in a very long time, and I had actually forgotten how to do it as I've probably been using the slingshot method for at least the past thirty years or so.

Wow! That would be a great way to teach beginners how to long tail cast on if they get confused as to how to do it the traditional way.

It's how I learned years ago and I had a request to help someone learn it because she has arthritis now and 2 hands work better for her.

Thanks for the video, the method was really helpful - and especially for fading out the background music! I was finding I couldn't focus on other videos while trying to block out the background noise!

I agree! I get way too distracted by music under voice. I just use it for the intro which has no voice track.

I only ever knew the slingshot method! Thanks for showing an alternative (which I'll try on my next project). Now, I've a confession: I do the cast on with the longer tail to the left, so I don't run out of yarn as much as with "the right way". The truth is, I don't know how to measure for a cast on, so I have to eyeball it (and sometimes rip it all off when I find out I've run out of yarn before finishing)...
@CherylBrunetteTV6 жыл бұрын
Hi Leonor, It doesn't really matter which side the tail is on. I just always do it the same way. Did you look at my video on how to improve your long-tail cast-on? That gives you some hints on measuring.

Knitting with Cheryl Brunette Good to know I'm not being a knitting misfit with my tail on the other side :D And thanks for reminding me of your other video, I was planning on watching it and got distracted. I'm on it!

I’ve seen this before. It’s a great technique but as I knit Continental I use the sling shot method. I only knit English style for stranded knitting. I can see the benefit though. Thanks for sharing!

I'm so glad! Thanks for commenting. I've been doing this fundamental thing for so long that I forget that it might be valuable to people to see it . . . as if everyone has been doing it forever (well, only 65 years).

Knitting with Cheryl Brunette I am a self taught knitter. I’ve been knitting off and on for many many years and I have just recently (since I discovered KZbin) have been surprised to see all the different ways on casting on! I have also changed my way of knitting. I used to be an English knitter but I’ve changed to the Continental method because I am able to knit faster and I can knit for longer periods of time without pain in my hands. It’s useful knowing both ways though. I’m glad I found your videos! They have helped me so much that knitting has become fun again.

Is there any difference visually, or any other advantage, between using and not using the slip knot to start off?
@CherylBrunetteTV6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy. Yes, there's a bit of a difference and it's personal preference as to which look you prefer. In general I use a slip knot if I'm not going to seam the edge where it starts, but it really depends on the project and the pattern stitch. Come join us at cherylbrunette.com if you like, for an infrequent newsletter that shares more things than I share on KZbin.

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly, and for the info., and for the invite. I know I'm on your e-mail list :) I"m so grateful for your presence on KZbin. You have been a wonderful tutor, as I don't know any other knitters. I stretch my skills with every new project, and have reached a level where I'm giving things as gifts. As a result, I have about 6 women asking me to teach them to knit. Not comfortable with that, but I am happy to point them to you and to Very Pink Knits for lessons.

new one on me and I like it!!! - is there an advantage to this cast-on or is it just another way
@CherylBrunetteTV6 жыл бұрын
It's just another way but there is an advantage for me and maybe for others. Because my left hand is free after I "knit off" the loop, I can control the distance between the cast-on stitches by how much I pull the tail and at which angle. I never have a too-tight cast on as a result.
