The number one I hear about is neuropathy, sometimes permanent.
@yerbba
@yerbba 2 жыл бұрын
Some of the most commonly-used chemotherapy agents in the treatment of breast cancer can cause neuropathy. Neuropathy can start early on in the course of treatment, and it's important to let your medical team know if you are having any numbness in the fingers and/or toes. Taking a pause in chemotherapy, decreasing the dose, or changing the medications can help. In some people, yes, neuropathy can be long-term if not permanent. This can be really hard for people, affecting quality of life in sometimes serious ways.

I am very very scared of chemotherapy but I got advice to start soon 😔 especially about getting a chemo brain
@yerbba
@yerbba Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience, we are rooting for you. Chemo brain is a concerning side effect for many people but is fortunately, usually not a long-term side effect. For those in whom it is, we don't want to diminish the impact it has on people's lives. We are getting a much better idea about how to manage this side effect of treatment. The decision about chemotherapy is of course highly personal. It sounds as if chemotherapy is important in your case given what you're conveying about the recommendation from your medical team.

Hi! I was terrified too! Once you are on treatmente you start learning how to manage your side effects. And also the doctors can recommend things to manage them. Permanent heart damage from anthracycline therapy. Atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, had my mitral valve replaced and now have heart failure with an ejection fraction of 24%. Will you address this long term effects of chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer. Hair loss is nothing compared to permanent heart damage.
@yerbba

Heart problems are an uncommon but incredibly important adverse effect of anthracyclines. It appears that the proportion of people having heart problems is less than 5%, but if you are affected, it is indeed serious. We will definitely do a video about this. Thanks for the suggestion.

How about eye problems? I have reduced acuity and have had to get a new prescription for distance vision. Also, I have blurred vision which effects night driving. I have learnt to tolerate these effects which occurred six days after second treatment of carboplatin and paclitaxel . Since then my dosage has been reduced by 20% which has not made a difference to those side effects. However, I have no problems with nausea, appetite loss, neuropathy and can cope well with fatigue after the seventh day of the 21 day cycle.
@yerbba
@yerbba Жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing about your experience. It's not uncommon for people to notice changes in their vision during and even after chemotherapy. We recommend that people not get a new prescription during chemotherapy but to wait until they are a couple of months away from chemotherapy. We have an upcoming video about changes in people going through breast cancer and its treatment.

@yerbba
@yerbba Жыл бұрын
In general, the most pronounced effects of chemotherapy, in particular, the fatigue, may start to lift after 6 months. About 1 in 20 people will have persistent fatigue. Your hair will start to grow in by 3 months (you may even need a trim over your ears at that time). Fingernails and toenails can take up to a year to grow in normally. Other side effects vary in terms of how long they last. For example, your taste should return within 3 months, and some people are left with longterm neuropathy.
