I love how every time it gets just a little bit quiet, and a bit more calm, some Gentoo has to all of a sudden come running down one of the aisle ways like his hair has just been set on fire, stirring everyone up again. These guys are hilarious. I wish I could know what they are incessantly trying to say with those fluttering vocalizations.

Most of what they are saying is probably calling for their mate or defending their little "territory" around their nest. Thanks for watching!

Funny thing...from what I've read, the Gentoo are by far the most docile and least confrontational of the penguin species.

Somehow I missed this comment earlier. Sorry! That's something I've never heard before -- I'll have to look into it. I can say that Chinstraps are very feisty and Kings are always whacking at each other. Southern Rockhoppers are also pretty aggressive. Adelies don't seem to be very confrontational that I've noticed, but now I'll have to watch them more closely and see if it's less than Gentoos. I've only been around Emperors a few times and they were all calm at the time. Magellanics are pretty calm since they just stay in their burrows most of the time. Thanks for giving me something to check out!

There’s a moulting king penguin there lol what’s he doing there? Watch at 27:04, watch as the one gentoo randomly gets furious and chases the other, they run past the moulting king
@PenguinsInternational7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that molting King was hanging out in that colony. It happens on occasion. It's only a guess, but I'm assuming they do this if their timing is off and they start molting before they reach their home breeding colony. Once they start to molt, they lose the waterproof properties of their feathers and can't swim. So they find the nearest colony of penguins of any species and feel safer with them until they complete their molt. That was a good observation in such a long video!

Penguins International thanks! Lol yeah don’t know how I noticed that, I think cuz I was watching it on my big tv and was relaxing to it or something and just happened to see it at the right time. And I’m definitely satisfied with that answer you gave! You obviously know a lot more about penguins than me but I feel like your guess was definitely right. We are currently in the field with the penguins right now and have a short window of internet connection. They're so needlessly mean to each other. One penguin will walk by another penguin and that simple interaction will cause them to act like they want to kill each other.

Where are the skuas and giant petrels?
@PenguinsInternational6 жыл бұрын
That's a great question and an astute observation! This video was shot at the Cow Bay colony which we also noticed for several years does not have a large number of skuas and virtually no giant petrels. We don't have a good answer except that this colony is farther from the water's edge than most other Gentoo colonies, so perhaps they don't attract as many predators. That's only a guess. The Volunteer Point colony just a few kms away has noticeably more skuas and giant petrels, but is also a much bigger colony (or more numerous smaller colonies of 3 different species of penguins) and is also much closer to the water's edge.

I have spent over a yea in their colony. Surprising how dumb and vulnerable they are on land, comparing to how clever they act in water. Skuas intentionally make them argue each other - angry penguin sometimes prefer to beat a neighbor than keep eggs. Where is this? Older chicks must suffer from heat here. I remember ones that laid in snowy mud to reduce overheat a bit. Audio (and smell) of colony is unforgetable.
@PenguinsInternational2 жыл бұрын
This was taken in the Falkland Islands. They get some heat stress on occasion, but generally during the breeding season it's cold enough to keep them happy. Where did you spend a year with them? That's very interesting! And yes, the smell is unforgettable!
@c64club2 жыл бұрын
@@PenguinsInternational Arctowski Station, South Shetlands.There is Adelie colony (plus small breeding group of Chinstraps) directly next to station and some smaller Gentoo colony just a mile away. May Gentoos stayed for whole winter. Observing differences between them is fascinating. Gentoos generally don't bother if other penguin eg hit them when running or poop on them, but they build nests in biggest distances from neighbors. That's why there is a "ray trace" on stones around every nest. Breeding adult always set its position to catch sun, so during a day it marks around when pooping. It works and looks like "sun clock" ;) Chinstraps are most likely to get offended by small things, they fight or argue frequently. They can even start to beat a human or fur seal. Colleague got his knee beaten by Chinstrap. Regenerated few days. Penguins' wings are fast, strong and heavy. Heat stress is one problem. The other is snow melting too fast some years. Youngest chicks sometimes god drown when a parent sits on them but water from molten snow flows under. Older chicks in last period when they change feather, try anything to lose a heat. First swimming in glacier stream, laying in mud, stay not that close to others in "preschool group".
@PenguinsInternational2 жыл бұрын
@@c64club That's a fantastic account of your time there. Thank you for sharing! None of us here have ever heard the term "ray trace" but it is a great description of their poo patterns!
