The difference between short and long vowel sounds in English is the length of time that the vowel is pronounced. Short vowels are pronounced for a shorter amount of time than long vowels.
• Short vowels are usually pronounced for about one-half of a second. They are often found in closed syllables, which are syllables that end in a consonant. For example, the vowel sound in "cat" is short because it is pronounced for a short amount of time and the syllable ends in a consonant (t).
• Long vowels are usually pronounced for about one second. They are often found in open syllables, which are syllables that end in a vowel. For example, the vowel sound in "mate" is long because it is pronounced for a longer amount of time and the syllable ends in a vowel (e).
There are also some cases where a vowel can be pronounced as long even though it is in a closed syllable. This happens when the vowel is followed by a consonant digraph, which is two consonants that are pronounced as one sound. For example, the vowel sound in "boat" is long even though it is in a closed syllable because it is followed by the consonant digraph "oa".
